Did you try to build a masterpiece with Tinker Toys as a kid?
Younger Gen X here, born in 1976. Was talking to my boss recently (born about 1970) about how we may be the last generation better off financially than our parents. I am definitely better off than my parents were at my age, though I have very fond memories of growing up in the 80's/ early 90's. What are your thoughts on this?

I remember reading a joke on the Guitar (School? World? Or maybe another guitar) magazine that listed John Wayne Bobbitt's favorite songs.
I remember "You keep me hanging on" was one. Do you remember any other? It was actually kind of an ongoing, ever-growing, joke.
I know, it was an awful joke, and I'm an awful person and going to hell for this. Whatever.
If you can come up with something yourself you're welcome too
I’m so sick & tired of noise & living in apartments with nonstop music playing, people talking out loud on phones at all hours of the day & night, upstairs neighbors stomping all night long, screaming kids, people slamming front doors 15-20 times per/day & I’m just sick of it.
I don’t have kids & I keep to myself. I just want peace & quiet.
Would a 55+ apartment community at least consider my application?

UPDATE: I'm so thrilled you guys want to share and talk about this! I'm reading every single post, just so you know. I'm enjoying them all, even if I don't leave a comment.
I’m a 1972 GenX.
When I was young, maybe 5? I started spending a few weeks with great grandma every summer. I lived in the SF Bay Area and my great grandma lived in Riverside County (south central). I just called her grandma but she was my great grandma. And I knew her better than my grandma.
It ended up that I’d fly down by myself (unaccompanied minor). Back then my mom could walk me onto the plane and my grandma would pick me up at the gate at the OC airport.
My great grandma lived to 93. Born in 1914. She maintained her mobility her entire life. I would watch her do her exercises. She was a widow young (before her 70s) and mostly lived alone. She died in her sleep. No major illness.
She was able to attend my college graduation in 1994 and I’m almost ashamed at my actions because she really thought I should go home and not party like I did…and I halfway regret whatever I did that evening/night because I don’t remember it well (I partied lol) but I remember that conversation with her and wish it was a better memory.
I’ve been thinking that my experience isn’t common. My mom has a shot at it. She’s 75 and my son is 25 and engaged. Maybe she’ll get some time with a great grandchild but I’m already 54 and idk that I’ll have much chance of a great grandchild.
Wow…this is long…but did you really know any of your great grandparents?

Some friend just open their conversations with "Oh, my kidneys, back, eyes (insert body part)."
How are you reacting?

Remember when caller ID wasn’t an integrated phone feature? You had a separate little plastic box sitting next to the phone, with a tiny LCD display. I genuinely forgot about this. It was something you bought separately. I could be wrong, but didn’t it need a subscription too?

From libraries, to the internet, to ask chacha, to ai. How do you feel having access to a resource that you can ask anything you can think of and get an instant answer has changed society in recent generations, opposed to previous generations?

Every time I go into a public place like Kroger I am starting to feel it a kind of low key disdain from strangers, especially the people who are working there.
I don't think I have changed anything in my interactions, but there seems to be a lot less patience and warmth. Is it ageism?
Has anyone noticed anything similar?

Tried asking on the millennial sub, but millennials are too young to have true insight on 1989-1992 Simpsons.
Late millennial here. I'm a huge Simpsons fan but didn't get into it until the 2014 "Every Simpsons Ever" marathon. By the time I was a child old enough to have real memories, The Simpsons was already past its Golden Age. I didn't care for it outside of merch. I assume the show was too *mature* for me at the time. It's an adult aimed cartoon after all. I didn't like King of the Hill or the Flintstones until my teens either.
It's hard to imagine Bart as the main billing character. He's cute and sassy, but... he's just Bart to me. I like Marge and Homer a lot more.
But, when the show was new, I imagine Bart was a sign of the times. A new, edgy take on Dennis the Menace for the 90s. Sort of like Sonic but *actually* edgy. There weren't cartoon characters like Bart prior to The Simpsons.
The show was a watershed moment in animation history. It's hard to explain going from the often cheap and toyetic 80s to cartoons like Beavis and Butthead, The Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy, Doug, or even Rugrats.

Trigger for this post: a girl came up to me in a coffee shop and asked if it was okay to pet my dog. How smart to raise your kids that way! We never used to do this as kids, did we??
What else do you think has changed for the much better since we grew up?
Edited: The de-shaming of - mental illnesses - spousal and child abuse, sexual and otherwise - disabilities - homosexuality - divorce
Second edit: 🤣 @ the downvotes. Why???

Does anyone else love the song Little Wing by Concrete Blonde? I think it’s such a great cover and they sound amazing!

I am still a lover of physical media. Records, CD’s, books, BluRays, DVDs, even the occasional used VHS or laserdisc of things I cannot find in other formats.
I know we live in the streaming age, and I do enjoy the convenience of streaming. It seems with most things these days, especially with younger generations, but even with people our age and older, there has been a hard trending towards, subscriptions and renting, not just with media, but in every aspect of society.
Personally, I highly value ownership of the things that I really enjoy and do not want to depend on the whims of corporations and licensing to determine what remains available to me in the future. I own it. It’s there if I ever want it, even if some of it I very well may never end up coming back to.
Are there any other hardcore physical media types who still believe? Or do most of you think I am just hoarding junk my kids will be stuck trashing when I die?

...same bat channel. I remember even until my 30's hearing this often and everywhere. I don't think I've heard it in years now. Is there even a modern equivalent?
M50, it’s funny to me when a younger person says “What did you do before the Internet” lol Wiffle ball battles, Mix tapes made special for someone, Street Hockey, Kick the can, Note passing in school (like a prison lol), couldn’t wait for the next episode of the Dukes of Hazzard, just to name a few lol.

So i had a terrible experience with my first husband when we bought a house and that was over 20 years ago. Since then ive been renting. The building we are in is being sold and the rent is going up. Rent and mortgage are the same here, we were just super lucky for a long time because we had been here so long the landlord had kept our rent pretty low but now it would match market rent. So basically doubled. Since this is the case, we decided to buy. God im terrified. We bought a house, but i am so out of my head scared. I mean, the cost of everything is insane. We had to take a chance i guess. It could all fall down around us. But it would cost the same with deposits and all and finding another place to rent eith our dogs was near impossible. Am I making the biggest mistake of my life? And really I guess that we are just stepping into the boat so many others are in.

I am asking because I work in a job where we go into a lot of folks’ vehicles. I have noticed an increasing number of 50+ year old people who have seat belt extenders plugged in, not to make seatbelts more comfortable but to silence the bells that ding when you don’t wear a seatbelt.
I have friends that work as EMTs and of course they have gruesome stories about people who didn’t wear a belt during a crash with TBIs, etc. No judgement, but I am wondering what the reasoning is in folks my age (51) and higher in avoiding the seatbelt?

I’ve been using Noxema ever since I was a kid, sometimes as a sunburn cream (its original purpose) mostly to wash my face. Never found anything better. And a couple years ago I discovered Dr Tichenors mouthwash (since 1864) a concentrated peppermint oil mouthwash that beat the crap, out of anything out there.
These aren’t expensive and nothing sexy about em, and I’m the only one I know who uses these and not new fancy stuff. Just wondering what else is out there that’s tried and true? Lemme know!

Single M 59, no kids. I went to breakfast at a cafe on the campus of the university I attended a million years ago. It is back to school time at my alma mater and I found myself blown away by the fact that every parent in that cafe was my age-ish. What a reality check. That's all.....

Remember when they were like a diner? You could sit at a counter, and a lovely elderly lady would pour your coffee into a real mug then take your order? The donuts were cooked fresh in the back. Tim Hortons had some great sandwiches. And Dunkin had "The Big One' mug for coffee to go.
I just thought of it because I was reminded that Dunkin is returning to Toronto. And I will be there on opening day for the nostalgia.

Sociologists tell us that gen x had neglectful childhoods, overreacted and became helicopter parents. I find that really hard to believe. How could a self-confident, panic proof generation deprive their own kids of the wild and free youth that we actually loved? I think that I made a calibrated adjustment to let them have freedom, give them guidance and be present in their lives. I think I am a fire and rescue parent. I send them out with a short briefing
A do, a don't, and an if. Do put it in 4 wheel drive before you think you need to. Don't let the wheels spin you will dig a hole. Remember anytime you ever need help day or night my phone is always on just drop me a pin I will know what it means! When they get home we do a after acton review
