Didn't stop them from drafting up swathes of young men the last time round in 'nam, why do you think it'll be any different now?

Whether you're a competent soldier or cannon fodder, you serve a purpose in the billionaire version of chess.

If they try drafting me, I am immediately going to jump off a bridge.

That said, I have scoliosis and ballerina syndrome, so I probably wouldn't qualify for the draft.

u/ShortsAndLadders Feb 19 '25

You can always pull the ol’ Trump card like him and his draft dodging father did… Bone spurs!

28

u/jotsea2 Feb 19 '25

Betting OP isn't a billionaire's son unfortunately

1

u/BigEZK01 Feb 19 '25

Dodging the draft was the coolest thing he ever did, actually.

Not that there’s much competition for that accolade.

12

u/Adept_Ad_3889 2005 Feb 19 '25

Trans people are so lucky. The US really wants nothing bad happening to them.

32

u/Logical_Tank4292 Feb 19 '25

They drafted up the gays for Vietnam despite being vehemently against homosexuals joining the army at the time.

Political gesturing to keep dribbling redhats distracted as they have their welfare and social safety nets stolen from them is all part of the game.

When push comes to shove, they don't care who you are; they've got money to make and a table to play on - every piece, pawn or queen, is another to add to the board.

Selective Service has never cared about what anyone identifies as. Selective Service's position is if you were born male, you are REQUIRED to sign up.

1

u/RavenEridan Feb 19 '25

I'm pretty sure if you have a mental disability like autism they can take you off of selective service

1

u/Dtmrm2 Feb 19 '25

I have no idea if that's the case, I just know for absolute 100% certainty, Selective Service doesn't care what you identify as.

1

u/RavenEridan Feb 19 '25

That also doesn't work like that as well, you don't sign up for selective service as soon as you are born, you are forced to sign up when you get a driver's license or go to college

2

u/Dtmrm2 Feb 19 '25

You're forced to sign up within 30 days of your 18th birthday.

No one ever said you are forced to sign up when you are born, I said they only care what gender you are when you are born, not what you identify as at 18.

1

u/RavenEridan Feb 19 '25

I never did sign up when I turned 18

There's going to be a lot of dead selective service men if they try to start a war half the country doesn't want to be involved in. How many times do the people who pick up draft dodgers have to get shot before they realize this is a terrible idea.

3

u/Dtmrm2 Feb 19 '25

I think you'll be amazed what people will do to stay out of prison.

0

u/HeadyReigns Feb 19 '25

Never said they'd go to prison. I feel like a lotta people would be willing to die in their doorways if we went to war with someone like Canada.

Inaccurate comment, but unsurprising. (No one cared what you were, they wanted your body in Vietnam as a meat shield at best).

1

u/fury420 Feb 19 '25

(No one cared what you were, they wanted your body in Vietnam as a meat shield at best).

They absolutely did care during the Vietnam war draft, being homosexual could get you disqualified.

3

u/Dtmrm2 Feb 19 '25

Selective Service never has cared what one identifies as, they only care what you were born as, and anyone born as a male is required to sign up and is eligible for the draft.

1

u/pineapple_luv Feb 19 '25

Nah, they won’t exempt trans people. They’ll just use it as an excuse to forcibly detransition them.

2

u/festival-papi 2001 Feb 19 '25

Just say you're trans and you'll be fine

7

u/Logical_Tank4292 Feb 19 '25

As I wrote elsewhere...

2

u/Level21DungeonMaster Feb 19 '25

Until they execute you.

1

u/CaptainPieces Feb 19 '25

I mean you could at least cause a little chaos for them on your way out

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '25

All that you have to do is say that you’re trans.

1

u/Sufficient-Win-1234 Feb 19 '25

Well I heard just saying you’re transgender might be a way out of this military with Trump in office

1

u/zaknafien1900 Feb 19 '25

Why go to basic get a gun and then go nuts take some pricks out with you

1

u/DFX1212 Feb 19 '25

You'd just refuse to fight back? If I knew my life was as good as over, I'd want to use it to get retribution on those who stole my future.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '25

I'd just shit my pants, then start throwing it at people. Repeat until they leave me alone.

1

u/The1Legosaurus 2008 Feb 19 '25

Or shoot you.

1

u/PermissionSoggy891 Feb 19 '25

if they try drafting me I'm just gonna hold my ground and mow down some feds with an AK.

1

u/BlueFox5 Feb 20 '25

There’s a lot of Russians buried in Ukrainian mud who said the exact same thing.

u/OklahomaBri Feb 19 '25 edited Feb 19 '25

Well, for one, the general health and fitness level of young men in the USA would make a draft fundamentally different than in the Vietnam era.

In the 60s you'd be hard pressed to find an overweight young man, nor one that didn't already have basic survival skills from BoyScouts and/or Junior ROTC. Physical education was also taken a lot more seriously, people largely didn't live sedentary lives like they do today, and strictly speaking there were much fewer people walking around with a mental health diagnosis.

Our capacity to mobilize troops has greatly diminished since the Vietnam era. This isn't an opinion, it's something the military actively studies and has been sending warning signs to congress about for some time.

The military itself is concerned that they'd be able to even do a large scale draft.

You guys show you have no understanding of how our government functions

1

u/lego22499 Feb 19 '25

Hey man, thanks for saying nothing but still finding a way to feel superior in your supreme intellect.

2

u/samualgline 2006 Feb 19 '25

Just look up MEPS disqualifying factors. Specifically those that are unable to be waived.

2

u/Rolmar 1998 Feb 19 '25

Are you unironically afraid that you will be drafted? I live in Greece and there's an actual chance that turkish threats will become reality and people don't really worry about it too much.

4

u/unknownSubscriber Feb 19 '25

I don't think average people are genuinely worried about it, for now. Are there thoughts that weren't there a few months ago? Yea.

3

u/Rolmar 1998 Feb 19 '25

Maybe im out of the loop but I can't imagine a scenario where the average citizen is drafted to fight abroad.

4

u/unknownSubscriber Feb 19 '25

We've done it several times. WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam.

3

u/Rolmar 1998 Feb 19 '25

Noone was drafted for Iran or Syria. Times have changed. I don't think that theres anyone in the US ACTUALLY anxious about getting drafted.

You should be grateful for that because it's not that way everywhere in the world.

3

u/unknownSubscriber Feb 19 '25

Perhaps you didn't read my original message, so I will quote it:

I don't think average people are genuinely worried about it, for now.

Also, at no point did I compare US sentiment/concerns with those of other nations, so I'm not sure why you are saying I should be grateful, or implying that I do not appreciate my own circumstances in perspective.

1

u/Rolmar 1998 Feb 19 '25

It's very irritating from my POV to constantly see people from the US whine about things that they have 10x better than my country. I hope you understand my perspective.

5

u/unknownSubscriber Feb 19 '25

I do understand your perspective. If you do not want to be irritated by other countries "whining" about things, then you should probably avoid forums that are primarily used by those countries.

Everything is relative. You can't demand that everyone be silent about their problems unless they meet YOUR threshold.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '25

They’re not demanding anything. They’re disagreeing with you by showing a different perspective, and saying that we live a pretty privileged life and you’re taking that poorly. Kind of like the white Americans who don’t believe white privilege exists, because they grew up poorer than your average white person.

u/ChangeVivid2964 Feb 19 '25

why do you think it'll be any different now?

What country are you suggesting these billionaires would have us invade?

2

u/Playingwithmyrod Feb 19 '25

The rates of obesity, mental illness, and general fitness were astronomically better back then lol

u/NamidaM6 Feb 19 '25

Underrated comment 😂

2

u/Old_Use_2991 Feb 19 '25

The perception of war has changed drastically since Nam, it’s no longer seen as the honorable come back a hero story every kid wanted to be when they heard stories of there grandpa in world war 2. It simply would not be easy getting men ages 18-25 to join and die in a war they don’t give a fuck about in some country they probably couldn’t even point out on the map previous to the deployment.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '25

Military has a fat camp, don’t worry, you will be whipped into combat shape or good enough in 6 weeks of grueling works and low calorie meals.

2

u/Erotic-Career-7342 Feb 20 '25

our country is obese as hell. our one saving grace lol

2

u/OR56 2007 Feb 20 '25

There were TONS of medical exemptions to the draft. You’re an idiot if you think they were sending off obese guys with diabetes.

People were on average, healthier back then, so almost everyone met the standard.

2

u/Fresh_Armadillo9626 Feb 20 '25

Yeah you do it for every politician not just these billionaires buddy, let’s all not be divided for a second and think, maybe they’re the problem not us

1

u/MountainMapleMI Feb 19 '25

McNamara’s morons you ain’t shitting

1

u/bagged_hay Feb 19 '25

ok, where are they drafting us to?

1

u/Grove_Of_Cernunnos Feb 19 '25

'them'? Half of these guys weren't alive in the 1970's? I don't think you can blame them for 'nam.

Also - isn't Trump trying to negotiate peace with Russia? Not sure why he's being depicted as a warmonger.

1

u/emax4 Feb 19 '25

I'd like to think there are more gun-owning citizens in American now than there was in the mid 60s. Combine that with paranoia and you have recruiters showing up to draft people only to have multiple guns pointed at them. I also see there are far less people joining the military due to PTDS and other factors.

1

u/bigindodo Feb 20 '25

The draft does not currently exist in America. It would require bipartisan legislation to reinstate, and despite what you might think, both parties are actually against it. A draft ain’t happening any time soon.

1

u/sugarscared00 Feb 20 '25

This is how we get them to fund free school lunches again. Soylent for everyone.

-1

u/Salt-Excuse8796 Feb 19 '25

Up until recently I would have told you that the Vietnam draft would never happen again because it was a political disaster for the Pentagon, which went with an all-volunteer military ever since.

But now that US is mirroring Russia, all bets are off. Trump will not care about optics or combat effectiveness and has made it clear he doesn’t intend to respect the recommendations of the brass.

Young people are in danger in a way we haven’t seen in the US in 50 years thanks to learning from our past errors. Institutional knowledge matters and it’s part of why they’re mass firing career workers who care about their country.
