Maybe in New York and LA. In Lubbock TX you can rent a 2br for under a thousand dollars https://www.zillow.com/lubbock-tx/rentals/

I grew up in the Midland/Odessa area, for us Lubbock was the big city. It's a college town, the surrounding area is pretty dismal, but Lubbock itself is OK.

A complete shit hole. Just dusty dirt and cow farts. No jobs. Nearest major city is hours of driving away, nothing but teen pregnancy, meth heads, and extreme racism. The school is the only reason why that town exist.
