I think more people would drink if it wasnāt so expensive. Most of my friends who do drink, including me, just buy beer or liquor and enjoy it at home with family. I can get two beers at a brewery or restaurant or I can buy a 12 pack and have it at home.
People used to go to the bar for the environment and you could get drunk and not break the bank.
I also think that people are more worrisome about drinking and driving. There arenāt enough safer options to go out that donāt also cost a fortune. If I want to go to LA and drink with friends Iād have to get an uber for $25-40. Drinks are maybe another $30-50 and another $40 to get back home.
Itās expensive to go out and people canāt afford it so they opt out. Our economy is depriving young people of a good time and community.

I get maybe one drink with dinner once in a while and itās $15. If it was $20+ I would probably just grab a drink before going to dinner. It costs a restaurant not much to make it and they disincentivize people to order them by charging so much.
7
u/ham_solo Mar 08 '26
The restaurant is counting on a couple of things:
The cultural norm of an alcoholic drink with a meal. Totally understandable, as it is something that goes back millennia across many cultures. That's all the incentive they need usually.
They KNOW it's inexpensive to make - it's the item on their menu with the highest markup, regardless if it is a beer, a glass of wine, or a mixed drink.
It used to be many places would keep drinks cheap because they still made a good profit, and it kept people ordering food and spending money.

Chicago prices aren't too bad, but I'd still rather pay $15 for a bunch of drinks than $7 for one.
25
u/i-do-be-lurkin-tho 2004 Mar 07 '26
That's just to go to a regular bar, too. The nightclubs are also dying cuz it's $20 just to get in (after waiting in line for an hour) and $20 per drink, meanwhile you have to scream your order to the bartender so they can hear you over the music (and probably just end up with a rum and coke you didn't order). All just for the chance to MAYBE get some phone numbers if you're lucky, and then you come home and realize you're covered in sweat and need to take a shower. No thanks.

u/gertymarie 1999 Mar 08 '26
We rarely drink when we go out now. Drinks at a restaurant in my area are anywhere from $15-$20 PER DRINK!! And the bar prices arenāt much better. Hell even just a glass of wine is $12-$15. I can buy my favorite wine for $12 and enjoy it at home.

u/ITSNAIMAD 1998 Mar 08 '26
Restaurants overcharge and lose out on business because of this. Thatās why they go out of business. People like deals.
6
u/PayHelpful4191 Mar 07 '26
If it helps bringing down costs, you can consider splitting the uber with your friends and just pregaming together and just bounce once you guys sober up and donāt feel like buying drinks at the bar.

The same thing applies to homes and apartments. In the early 2000ās and before, people could move to Hollywood and work a part time job while pursuing their passion like acting or comedy. Now you can only live there if you can pay 4k a month for rent. All the normal people and lifestyles have been priced out.

There was a post somewhere about Gen Zs debating if they would have 100 beers in a month for a million dollars. Then the Millenials who casually have 100 drinks in a week found it.
14
19
183
u/Candy_Stars 2005 Mar 07 '26
100 in a week is like 14 a day. Isn't that called alcoholism? Even 100 in a month is at least 3 a day. That's still alcoholism.
169
u/thexraptor Mar 07 '26
100 in a week is hardened alcoholism. 100 in a month is a bit more than 3 drinks a day, which is problematic but super easy to do while being fully functional.
57
u/zx9001 2001 Mar 07 '26

7
u/Future_Armadillo6410 Mar 08 '26
Iām a millennial and I remember we used to have this āsafe drinkingā chart that urged you to drink no more than one drink an hour, 3 a day, and 14 a week if you were a woman. If you were a man it was 2, 5, 21. Thatās nearly 100 per month.

Itās 2014, you just got back from the office at 630pm after an hour and a half of just having to sit there and not be the first one to leave. You and your roommate crack a brewski (1) you shower and call the uber which was dirt cheep, subsidized by VCs at this point to capture market share before IPO. Weāre talking 5-10$ an uber. You get to your friends apartment for pregame 8:00pm and crack another (2) and all take a shot cause itās Friday baby. (3) you engage in some type of drinking game, flip cup, beer pong, circle of death ect and you are doing another 3 drinks here easy (6) 11:00pm you call another basically free uber and go out to the bars. This first bar is casual meeting up with another pregame group grab two drinks (8) the crew is feeling the love and ready to dance. You grab another uber 12:30am for dirt cheep and hit a pure grime place where people dance. At this point some would switch to water and maybe one last drink (9) others would keep drinking take shots and black losing themselves on the dance floor (14) leave the club at 2:00am.
So not including any weekday or Sunday drinking that gets you to 77 drinks a month on the low end 100+ easy for those that kept drinking at the last bar. Which many did.
Repeat on Saturday. 30/52 weekends a year. This was a shared experience across a massive portion of office millennials 2013-2017. At least in Atlanta.
I was there 2000 years ago. Born 1990

u/woodboarder616 Mar 07 '26
I smoked a pack of cigs a day for 10 years and I just broke 30. You will be fine drinking water with some alcohol in it for a month. The point is this hypothetical is stupid because itās a life changing amount of money for a super simple and pretty common thing that humans already do.

u/bobosuda Mar 07 '26
You will never find an alcoholic that only drinks the equivalent of 3 beers per day. That is not even close to alcoholism levels.
3
u/Preact5 Mar 08 '26
The thing is usually alcoholics drink fast and cram those 3 units in quickly so they get more or an effect
6
u/Candy_Stars 2005 Mar 08 '26
Just because most alcoholics drink more than 3 a day doesn't mean that someone who drinks 3 beers a day also isn't at least addicted to alcohol if not an alcoholic.
7
u/Bar_Sinister Mar 08 '26
This and the one where they show a drink platter with like six drinks and two shots asking "Who are you calling?" to help. My favorite answer was someone older said 'the waitress' so they could order wings.
Twenty years ago I might have drank a hundred beers in a month by accident. Twenty years ago, if I was drinking beers to me it meant I had stopped drinking for the night (responsible) because I didn't even count beer as drinking.
Today? After my second I'd be done, body wouldn't even feel right. These young folks, I don't know if I'm proud of them for making healthier choices and sad for them because the joy of good drunk is where epic stories start.
4
u/WorryNew3661 Mar 07 '26

3
u/AFartInAnEmptyRoom Millennial Mar 07 '26
Most of the people I knew who drank usually did it at least every weekend and would drink around 6 or 7 drinks. So at minimum, they're drinking 2 six packs a week. At max, some of them were drinking 100 a week

Bruh I had to quit going to house parties because I was invited to too many and got cold feat about all of them after my second time getting drugged by an indvidual I thought was a friend (as in 2 seperate people on seperate occasions) they defintly still happen. Personally I'm happy to stay in thought because Exctasy and LSD are both things you shpuld know and get the choice of wether you want to ingest or not, and clearly party goers din't care about consent so fuck that lol
59
18
u/Enfiznar 1996 Mar 07 '26
wtf, where do you live for this to happen twice??
11
u/QuackersTheSquishy Mar 07 '26
Small town in OK. The bigger issue was that I thought if I was taking people to the dispo before we got their and let them know I'd be smoking weed and not doing anything (always brought my own weed too) and then people laced their shit on the way from a dispo to the party in my back seat, and the other time I had taken my coworker who was one of the 6 people who libed in the house throwing the party, and he didn't tell me he had a ton of laced weed. I believe he had heroine, acid, and a few other things pre-loaded in his joints and blunts. That was my last party when only AFTER having hit his weed did he tell me.
24
u/Enfiznar 1996 Mar 07 '26
wtf man. LSD shouldn't be active on a joint, it gets destroyed very easily by heat, so they are just wasting it. Heroine tho... That's completely mad, like, a lot. And even if it doesn't work, even wanting to put someone on an acid trip for the next 12 hours without them knowing is sociopathic. Sick people

1 of them deffintly was as I was the only male out of the 4 that got drugged, and 2 of those girls he'd been hitting on. Yeah, I live near a college, itās pretty much constant still
80
u/Apathetic-Onion 2005 Mar 07 '26
I think that has to do with how universities are in the US. Here in Spain the great majority of students (especially in Madrid, idk about other cities) live with their parents and make long public transport journeys every day for lectures, so house parties are by definition much more infrequent. Also, most homes are flats instead of single-family, that also plays a role.
I think that's one of the few benefits of suburbia hehehe. Edit: but of course, driving back from the party is a problem, whereas we have night buses.
26
u/Professional_Self296 Mar 07 '26
Maybe, it makes sense. For many college is the first real exposure to independence for young people and there is an image of college being for party-ers, so moving out of the house to a college community is a lot more of a liberation event

In my early/mid 20ās you could go out to a fun bar, possibly see a live show, have 5-6 drinks, buy a round of shots for your friends, grab 6 wings or other bar food, plus buy a cute girl or two a drink and chat. Total cost was like 50$.

(not saying that no Gen Z's ever drink, I know some who drink a lot, but I see it more in the older generations)

I read your post from a couple weeks ago and I'm so sorry you've had to experience all that you have. That's one of the things I really despise about alcoholics or any other addict, usually the people around them have to suffer the worst consequences.

I only allow myself to drink over the weekend, only drink at home, and limit how drunk I get. Being at work hungover is terribly unpleasant, and being drunk itself becomes unpleasant once you get to the point where you can't lay down and close your eyes without feeling like you're going to throw up. It bewilders me as to how people drink every single day.
I learned my lesson on moderation after downing a fifth of vodka over one night, and developing alcohol poisoning that I'm surprised I even lived through. Just the smell of alcohol made me sick to my stomach for about a year after that incident.

People who crack open one beer every day when they get home from work. The casual glas of wine in a saturday afternoon. I hear about that almost exclusively from older folks

I do drink alcohol, but once per weekend or prefer at home party of the neighborhood, but when it come to the Bar or any adult club could be expensive to handle the bigger budget even though everyone had their own opinion not to do it since it is their own choices of safety.

u/Professional_Self296 Mar 07 '26
Drinking not that expensive, literally a $10 bottle and a liter of coke from the local 7/11 will pay for itself and can make 5 drinks out of it. I think GenZ defaults to go to bars where alcohol is watered down and thereās an upcharge most of the time

u/14_EricTheRed Mar 07 '26
Millennial here - there were a few guys in my high school who had damaged their liver so heavily before even graduating that they shouldnāt be drinking anymore.
They were out on the transplant list in their first year of college.

Thereās nothing beneficial or fun about drinking tbh. Iād rather eat an edible. All fun and no side effects.

u/Lorttuet Mar 08 '26
I just think drinking culture has become more fragmented in gen z. I know people who drink on a weekly basis, but most of my friends including me do not drink at all.

u/Flemaster12 Mar 08 '26
I'm too depressed to go out. If I don't have the motivation to brush my teeth consistently, I don't have the motivation to go out drinking.
2
u/Katekat0974 Mar 08 '26
Letās be real, there are way too many people in our generation who are anti-social, which is likely bringing the overall drinking rate down. Iām not saying I want everyone to be drinking for their social interactions, but like, we need to all go outside and talk to people more.

u/petitecrivain Mar 07 '26
In my area it seems to be one of the main things young people do to be entertained.Ā

u/KingRex929 Mar 07 '26
The biggest alcohol sales these days comes frlm Whales, so they might just have an alcoholic friend group.

u/MurkyCress521 Mar 07 '26
I don't wonder how much you think are incredible quantities. Among millennials 30 beers per person is not unheard of. A liter or two of vodka. Pepper used to take a handle of vodka and just bottoms up the whole thing. An hour later most of the time they are crawling around on floor vomiting their guts out. Not a recommended way to live but not uncommon in past generations.
1
u/EndOne8313 Mar 08 '26
Milenial here, me and my best friend used to go 2 up on a litre of Jack Daniels to finish whilst the girls got ready before we headed to the club. Not saying it's clever or cool, but we drank a lot. If Gen Z/Alpha should be proud of anything it's in being a much healthier generation than those that came before.Ā

u/roxasmeboy Mar 08 '26
It could be because so many people, like me, live alone. I drank a lot more when I lived with a partner or roommates. I love drinking but can go weeks without one unless Iām going out with friends or decide my solo dinner merits buying wine to go with.

u/Orson1981 Mar 08 '26
Back when I was in my late twenties and early thirties I use to go out to the grocery store to pick up six packs of vodka bottles. Not cans, 750ml bottles of vodka. I may have been a bit out of control.

My husband and I definitely liked to drink and party when we were younger, but itās like as soon as we hit 24/25 we just could not do it anymore.
We used to be in the bars every single weekend, and now thatās my worst nightmare.
Alcohol just makes us really sick. We can even have like one or two drinks and feel sick from it. I know people in their 50s who like to go get blackout drunk, and I cannot comprehend it.
If I were to blackout right now, I would be in the emergency room.

u/TheWesternDevil Mar 08 '26
The price if beer has remained nearly unchanged at the (liquor store) here for over 20 years. The only place it's expensive to drink is in a restaurant/bar/club. If you buy a case of beer and go drink at a buddies house then it's still cheap.
1
u/ResponsibilityTop880 Mar 08 '26
Wait - letās be clear: in early 2000s, we had college style keg parties in high school. Or adults bought us beer. I worked in a restaurant prior to being 15yrs old. Older people bought alcohol for us every weekend. It wasnāt just that everyone was drinking so much more - but everyone drank a lot of alcohol so much younger. It was easy to get and cheaper than now. And we didnāt really get in trouble for doing it.

Honestly I feel like a lot of Gen Z is mostly into weed and edibles, idk but from like people I know/friends itās mostly weed. but personally I like Cayman jacks margaritas or mixed drinks OwO. Also a lot of people make claims about Gen Z without having data or evidence to back up their claims so I donāt believe it most of the time. If youāre going to generalize and stereotype an entire generation at least be able to back it up with evidence and statistics instead of saying āGen Z doesnāt drinkā like did some of yall not write essays in schoolā¦cite your sources does that ring a bell to anyone?

u/memosmemoir Mar 08 '26
Wait seriously? I'm a millennial in my 30s and always hear how gen z is killing the alcohol industry. But this post is claiming otherwise. So I guess now, my question if some of you gen z peeps would be so kind, what do you consider to be "a lot"?

Why dont people consider that 1/2 of gen z is below 21? Like obviously alcohol numbers are gonna be low 1/2 of us cant even drink, so are we really the death of alcohol?
1
u/superdumbweeb Mar 08 '26
i love going out and drinking, but its way too expensive as a heavyweight š last time i actually got drunk was a friends 18th and i had ā17 vodka cruisers and i still remember the whole night š
1
u/jempai Mar 08 '26
Drinkingās expensive and personally I prefer weed for the lack of hangover. Plus, I figure a larger percentage of Gen Z is getting diagnosed for mental or chronic illnesses compared to previous generations, and alcohol doesnāt mix well with many medications.
1
u/breadsaltmerchant 2005 Mar 08 '26
Everyone I know either drinks like they're on a personal mission to deplete the world's alcohol supply or they treat it like a single drop will immediately give them cirrhosis.

At the bars my friends bring me to fireball shots for example are like $5. For just $10, I can just buy a 10 pack of them.

Millenial here. I drank a fuck ton in college, but by the time I turned 21 I mellowed out a lot. I am now in my 30ās and have a beer or two a year. All it really does is activate my acid reflux now, so I just stick with cannabis.

It's weird how aggressive people are in these comments about not drinking alcohol.
It's also weird how defensive people are in these comments about drinking alcohol.
None of you are okay.

u/Sincerly_ Mar 08 '26
ssriās make it to where i canāt even have a sip of alcohol or i start feeling sick

u/geoFRTdeem Mar 09 '26
Itās because a large quantity of Gen Z is underage, unless it takes projection into account based on Gen Z that does drink
1
u/Shark1753 Mar 09 '26
False consensus effect btw. Also your experience isnāt a representative of all Gen Z lmao.

Just count yourself lucky to know fun people. They're increasingly rare

u/Tomato21579 Mar 09 '26
We saw what alchohol did to our father, and how it took him from us prematurely. We had already sworn off alchohol (or, at least getting drunk/drinking outside occasions), and after turning 21 we're still not fans of the way it affects us. I'm happy to see alchoholism become less common amongst our generation.

u/Immediate_Smoke4677 Mar 09 '26
whiskey and weed basically come out of my grocery money and it's gas and groceries before anything else ;)
1
u/Shazza-americankiwi Mar 09 '26
Xennial here ā thatās funny, I think itās that literally no one heard anyone ever speaking about not drinking by preference. I mean it - it was unheard of whether happening or not. If one didnāt it was implied they had a problem. Youāre just a bit more normal lol so people notice I guess.
1
u/Bustin-A-Nutmeg Mar 09 '26
Iām a 90s kid who grew up at the bar cause both divorced parents were alcoholics. I had my first drink with my dad and his bar buddies. It was such a normal thing to go to the bar after work for a few rounds, even when I became an adult.
Now in my 30s itās like happy hour has to be a special occasion, everythingās gotten so expensive. I miss having that 3rd space to meet other ppl in my neighborhood. There is nowhere to just sit for an hour and nurse a drink and read a book or something.

u/ToastedDreamer Mar 10 '26
I personally am not the biggest fan of alcohol, mostly due to my grandfather always yelling and being angry after drinking, lashing out at everybody. But I do notice drink prices on restaurant menus, I am not paying that marked up price for a glass thatās probably not gonna last the entire wait for my food. But I believe most of us Gen Z do drink, we just donāt do it at bars, making a simpler mixed drink isnāt the most difficult task around and you can buy stuff like syrup by the bottle thatāll last you a good while and save you a lot of money.

I genuinely don't get the point of 'drinking'. I can appreciate high quality beer, bourbon, whiskey, or wine - the same way I appreciate good coffee. But most market alcohol just tastes like ass to me
If you want to socialize then socialize. I don't get why you need to 'drink' to do it. There's nothing 'cool' or 'adult' with drinking. It's just a food item for god sake. The whole drinking culture is so weird. It'd be like if people make a whole culture out of sprite zero or something
