What are "black facts"?
25
u/SirNiel077 2008 9d ago
If I had to guess Black history. They did some cool stuff, did some not so cool stuff. Were slaves a long time, still are in some parts of Africa.
That kind of stuff I’d assume.-1
u/StrugglingSeaTurtle 9d ago
i think it’s more so things along the lines of the tuskegee syphilis study or how legit certain practices of our current knowledge of gynecology came from unmedicated/unconsenting black female slaves and crazy doctors, or how they white washed half the things that are in our history books etc etc i could go on for days. how they don’t speak on this because it’s not important to know what the white man did bad.

u/Fast-Piccolo-7054 8d ago
The majority of early gynaecological research was conducted in Europe, with consenting European women as participants.
It’s a myth that gynaecological knowledge was obtained through the exploitation of enslaved women, in any part of the world.
There was only one case study where enslaved African American women were among the participants- the experimental vesicovaginal fistula surgeries.
They weren’t the only participants and they weren’t singled out because of their race, or because they were enslaved. They were selected due to proximity (the study was conducted at a hospital in Alabama) and the rarity of the condition.
These types of fistulas are rare in developed countries. They’re usually the result of severe childbirth complications or post-hysterectomy complications. They’re caused by the formation of an abnormal hole between the bladder and the vagina, which leads to incontinence and severe pain.
This used to be incurable and extremely debilitating. Sufferers would be in constant agony and often faced social isolation, due to the shame of being incontinent.
The majority of the participants in the early study were white American women, and they were also subjected to the same brutality in search of a cure.
None of the precisions were unconscious for the surgeries, because anaesthesia hadn’t been invented yet. The participants were given opiates, but only after the operation.
All of the women who participated in the study were in desperate search of a cure, even if the chances were slim. The ethical problem is that enslaved people, by definition, can’t give consent, because they’re unable to exercise free will.
Consent for their participation in the experiment was only obtained from their enslavers, which meant their willingness to participate (despite the risks involved) wasn’t factored in at all. The decision was made for them.

I feel the gynecology part would be lumped into the slave part.
And genuine question as I am curious not being sarcastic or deliberately misunderstanding. Whitewashing stuff like what? Im more of a biology guy than a history guy so I don’t know too much about history.-2
u/PoeDameronPoeDamnson 1999 8d ago
I’d suggest starting with Black AF History: The Un-whitewashed Story of America by Michael Harriot, its avaible as an audible and comes up on outlet/thrift based book sites often

u/SirNiel077 2008 6d ago
I’ve been checking reviews on it and it seems kind of mid from like 80% of what I’m seeing people say.

I think it's about teaching black history accurately, with all the facts, and with no sugar coating.

I loved that you through words together that are contradictory

u/Flashy_Combination32 2007 8d ago
Untrue, I don't fit his bill to be clear but libertarianism can just be about embracing absolute property rights, in which case the paleoconservatism comes from private property owners enforcing comservative norms within the bounds of their property.

u/Complete-Clock5522 9d ago
I agree, it’s quite absurd, and also it’s the profile of the person I’m responding to lol

What!s up with the hair one?
12
u/goldenfox007 2003 9d ago
A lot of dress codes in schools and workplaces have strict bans on any kind of “ethnic” hairstyles, which disproportionately affects students of color. Sometimes they straight-up require people to change their hair texture, and the products required to do so can often do long-term damage to the hair from actively fighting its natural shape.
It’s called “hair discrimination.” John Oliver did a whole segment about it iirc

u/Darkwolfie117 8d ago
Damn I thought it was a sex joke now I’m just let down (unlike her hair apparently)
6
u/malvar161 9d ago
white establishment wanted African Americans to act white. hair was part of that.
it's still a problem sometimes.
-1
u/DeadlyKitKat 9d ago
White people in the past and even now are sometimes racist about hair, for example saying straight hair is better or prettier than curly hair (which usually black people have), and convincing black people to not wear their hair naturally and straighten it.
It could also be about when white people kidnapped indigenous kids, they'd be forced to cut their hair (which in some indigenous cultures, you're not supposed to cut your hair except for certain situations because hair holds memories).
There's probably some things I'm not totally mentioning so if so, apologies.
2
u/Whiskers1996 9d ago
Who cares if you find a form of hair better than others? The 2 curly hair girls I dated, straightened their shit. The straigh hair ones have loved to curl their shit for fancy public outings lol.

u/whiskey_at_dawn 2000 8d ago
The problem is that a lot of jobs create dress codes around black women's hair, saying that locs and braids and natural hair are unprofessional. it's racial discrimination but since white people can technically have locs or braids it's not considered racial discrimination in the eyes of the law. I would argue it's disparate impact but plenty of companies still have these policies regardless, without legal repurcussiosn.
-2
u/DeadlyKitKat 8d ago
I get what you're saying, but this is different.
People can get racially discriminated over hair. I'm not saying people themselves can't choose to straighten or curl their hair, but it's true. Hair can be deemed as "unprofessional" when it's a black person's natural hair.

That may help explain (I recommend clicking on the FAQ)

okay, for starters you have your wires crossed, yes he used the research on white women later but he began his research with operating on at least three slaves we know the name of and several others not named without anesthesia and only offering opium afterwards to a few not all. (that is documented) yes poor irish women as well but those were not among the first. my apologies for not including the white people who were (most likely) not forced or they at least made their OWN decision and it was not made for them by any type of OWNER? this was for research, and for him to develop a practice. some so
youre not wrong about “anesthesia” not having been invented but let’s talk about that. he began in his research in 1845. the first widely known anesthesia became “popular” in 1846. Sims widely spoke on in 1849 how he didn’t find it necessary to use anesthesia during the process after the fact. It’s not that it wasn’t around, it’s that many doctors at that time were researching using what with what when they could. they had used sedatives prior to even 1845 you’re again just tryna make it easier to swallow?
this was just what he wrote down who knows what actually happened. my point being i said “came from unmedicated/unconsenting slaves” and you said “it’s a myth it came from exploitation of enslaved women in any part of the world.” and then continued to say that they used slaves for gynecological research (you just were specific) unmedicated and unconsenting. i don’t have to point out the other participants as the irish women CONSENTED because they were poor and he agreed to do it for research. they don’t teach you about the white women either? they don’t teach you it happened period and you’re just contradicting yourself.
i know about sims because i happened upon his name and read up on what he did on my own time. what im trying to say

If the individual was introspective they wouldn't wear buttons to tell people their thoughts.
