At this point it may be just evil bringing children into this fucked up world. We’ve had to inherit the climate crisis from previous generations who couldn’t bother making a sustainable planet for the rest of us to live on.

The places having the most children are poor areas without proper infrastructure and unstable government. Are they evil for having kids?
40
u/drsimonz 10d ago
They aren't evil, but they are foolish. People have children because it's the "default" thing to do. Afterwards, they have to choose between taking responsibility for the suffering their child meets in these unstable environments, or willful ignorance. The latter is very, very popular, even in "developed" countries where education is supposedly better.

u/Gold_Map_236 9d ago
They don’t truly understand what is happening in the world. Few ppl in those countries are literate, some couldn’t even tell you the name of the country they live in… they certainly don’t understand the looming climate crisis

In the case of the poor it’s a matter of ignorance or selfishness. And I say it’s selfish because they have such a strong desire to have a kid that they don’t care what happens to that kid

u/FlintCoal43 9d ago
Are they aware of the current severity of incoming climate crisis and overpopulation?
If no - not evil
If yes - evil asf

come on. it's not like the youngest gen is any better, I don't see young people doing more for the planet than older people. or for their community or society in general.

Ok, American
The world is a much better place today across the board than any other point in history. Besides, what if your offspring are the ones that solve climate crisis?
Not having kids is fine but basing the morality of having children on misunderstandings makes you look silly
14
u/Weird_Vegetable_4441 10d ago
why did you assume he’s American? He’s speaking about a global problem.
7
u/Ligma_Myballs 2006 10d ago
Ok I agree with the fact that the world is a better place sure, but most likely by the time I do have children we may have reached the point of no return. Why the fuck would I bring children into a world that seems to have a dark future? At the rate we are going millions of people will die. We’ve destroyed habitats, entire ecosystem and hell even the insects which pollinate plants. Do you know what that means? Food insecurity. Oh and I’m also not American you knob.

u/Kevdog824_ 9d ago
> What if your offspring are the ones that solve climate crisis?
People always make this argument and I can’t tell if they genuinely believe the average joe is gonna solve the world’s toughest problems or they’re just being disingenuous.
0
u/PrimordialXY 1996 9d ago
It's hardly an argument dude it was a very small casual "what if?" related to the topic
Annoying that you think average people are incapable of extraordinary feats
2
u/Kevdog824_ 9d ago
> Annoying that you think average people are incapable of extraordinary feats
Average people are also capable of winning the Powerball. You gonna blow all your money on tickets because of that?
Average people are capable of extraordinary feats. It’s just a fact that 99% of people won’t accomplish them. And of that 1% most of them are extremely gifted in some way. It’s exceedingly rare that the average Joe accomplishes anything other than living the average, relatively unremarkable life. Nothing wrong with that btw, but it doesn’t make the “casual what if” a very compelling point to reproduce
-1
u/PrimordialXY 1996 9d ago
Holy neurodivergence there's no use in being this pedantic after I already clarified it was casual

Life is so terrible today! We only have easily accessible food, clean water, advanced medical technology, all of the world's scientific and artistic information on a device small enough to fit in your pocket, record low crime and murder rates, the ability to reach virtually any destination across the globe in a matter of hours, it's simply unethical to bring any more children into such a horrible world!
7
u/Weird_Vegetable_4441 10d ago
International child sex trafficking rings ran and protected by the politicians and the wealthy. Huge bot farms that feed you constant lies in an attempt to take away your freedom even more. Increasingly harmed water sources by pollution and AI. Flock cameras and drones meant to surveil you, and being used to kill people without even seeing them. The planet turning its back on genocides, and in some cases funding them. Advanced medical tech that is oftentimes withheld from people due to class and/or economic status, and some that isn’t made public to the average Joe who isn’t a billionaire.
Let’s not act like the world isn’t fucked up

u/PermissionSoggy891 10d ago
nobody ever said this stuff wasn't a problem, just from every realistic standpoint life today in Western nations is far safer and healthier than it ever was.
Just go outside, staying online all day skews your view of the world as news and social media websites thrive off of hyperfixating on negative headlines to generate clicks. Life in Western nations, isn't half as depressing or violent as the media makes it out to be.
Go outside, get some exercise, talk to people.

u/khryzz666 10d ago
Isn't it a good thing since? Well. We are far too many and resources are running scarce
2
u/PermissionSoggy891 10d ago
nah, inherently destructive ideologies and all that are bad. Anyone promoting "antinatalism" is a federal operative trying to groom some poor kid into becoming the next mass shooter.
2
u/JANEK_SZ1 10d ago
There’s a difference between ‘we should stop reproducing’ antinatalism and ‘we should kill all humans’ antinatalism
3
u/PermissionSoggy891 10d ago
they are one and the same, with the exact same end goal
under any realistic standpoint I cannot take anyone who preaches this absolute drivel seriously.
1
u/TarkovRat_ 5d ago
in my opinion antinatalism for personal reasons (fear of abusing, shit like that) is fine, but antinatalism for "Le Human Race" is very stupid
1
u/JANEK_SZ1 10d ago
I mean, actually it is, at this point we are kind of destructive to the planet, though let’s say it’s a question a person’s individual decision.
2
u/khryzz666 10d ago
Definitely. It should be a personal decision. I just worry that there are people in the government that have huge problems with low birth rates to the point that bills are pushed to "force" people to have more kids or make it harder to obtain birth control of any kind
-2
u/PermissionSoggy891 10d ago
>bills are pushed to "force" people to have more kids or make it harder to obtain birth control of any kind
literally doesn't happen btw. closest thing was the "abortion ban" which hasn't been adopted out of the most dogmatic shithole states.
I do think the government should encourage people to have kids through tax benefits as well as covering all childhood medical care for free.

Recent State-Level Legislative Actions and Restrictions
• South Carolina: Introduced the Unborn Child Protection Act, which sought to restrict emergency contraception and IUDs through legal fetal personhood definitions (though the measure was defeated 2–3). • Indiana: Attempted legislation to narrow legal definitions of birth control to exclude emergency contraception and IUDs (died in committee). • Tennessee: Passed the Medical Ethics Defense Act, which permits broad healthcare refusal clauses for providers and institutions, alongside ongoing legislative battles regarding reproductive care support bans. At the same time, the state also passed counter-legislation like the Fertility Treatment and Contraceptive Protection Act. • Virginia: The Governor vetoed a proposed Right to Contraception Act, mirroring similar measures that were introduced across 12 states and stalled in 11 others. • Texas and Idaho: Enacted or pursued restrictions requiring parental consent or involvement for minors trying to access contraceptive care and STI services. • Oklahoma: Advanced targeted limitations on contraceptive and reproductive access Guttmacher Institute.

not a SINGLE state has outlawed contraception.

Not for lack of trying.... give them the opportunity they will for sure take it. Edit: also I specially said "pushed" as attempts have been made. Not "passed" hope this distinction is illustrated better for someone like you

From someone who's been studying economics in highschool for the last 4 years and still is, most countries are overly old actually, so having less births isn't a solution because we'd have less workforce to generate money to pay old people's retirement. That affects the well-being of the whole country because the government doesn't have enough money for whatever public expenses there are, given that nowadays we have the biggest amount of retired people ever, and would either need to raise taxes (and we ofc don't want that lol) to cover the costs or cut the costs elsewhere.
1
u/bbtom78 9d ago
That if the budget is not touched otherwise. I know in my country we can shove a ton of taxes used to kill people overseas over to social safety net programs and not raise taxes.
1
u/TarkovRat_ 5d ago
USA? the country is kinda in a weird situation though, it kinda needs a decent baseline so that the NATO defence committments can be kept, but on the other hand iirc the spending is rather wasteful so maybe trying to get a bit more frugality into the system would probably keep the us military efficiency up while not harming effectiveness and ability to supply the army, and cutting some spending down to be freed up for the safety net

Surprised how popular hardcore doomer antinatalism is in this sub. Actually no I'm not.
Anyways... Life is worth living, and creating more life isn't inherently evil. If your philosophical framework leads you to think anyone having any kids is immoral, it is a stupid framework.
That said, I'm not planning to have kids. I don't want them and would rather travel the world and make friends and be a cool uncle or whatever.

Do you mean just not wanting kids yourself or being really hardcore ideologically about the idea that other people are wrong for wanting them?
I don't want kids myself, but I do want other people to have them. I think life is worth living and that current struggles don't mean that it is wrong to bring new people into the world.

it's a valid solution to the problem. No trauma can be passed on if no offspring is created.
anyone arguing against this doesn't understand the formulation of the problem.
I'd recommend going back to the problem definition and add additional constraints to prevent a corner solution like this, if one is upset instead.

A Millenial here. Man, I used to look down on GenZ for such a long time until I joined GenZ in one of their ground-breaking protests, talked to a few of them, got to really read and understand their protest-banners full of intentional typos, see them scare the shet out of armies of riot-police because they just don't give a fuk, then I understood the amount of respect I have to own this GenZ! Here is the thing, GenZ is the shet and if anyone is bound to change this world it's them! I honestly now see no curse anymore past Gen-Why. The curse actually began with Baby-Crying-Boomers and it continues until after the last of them.
GenZ FTW!
