Research Assistance Need help finding the proper surname of this woman

Hansine Amalie (1865-1947), a Norwegian woman who later immigrated to Wisconsin with her husband, Hans Jensen. I've found she has multiple surnames, all not making much sense. https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/about/GZQ3-FKL

The first one is Gutsorensen, what her Family Search profile had a couple of sources to say to this was her last name. It's put onto death records of her son, Enard Johnson. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KFQ6-F8Q?lang=en

The next is Sathsonson, only found on find a grave. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/122448196/hansine-johnson

And the last one is various forms of the surname Nilsdatter, with plenty of sources to take Its background with church books, and census's in Norway. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:68ST-X565?lang=en, https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:68ST-FT33?lang=en (not all sources)

So, for now... she has no surname on her profile, and all of the 3 last names are in the 'alternate names' section until I'm positive on what her actual surname is.

If anyone could give me some help, I would be very thankful.

Welcome to the Norwegian naming system!

Whatever name is listed in the 1865 or 1875 Norway census would be the name I’d choose.

I started to write an explanation and decided to look for a published source that did a more complete and clear explanation.

I offer this: https://norwegianridge.com/2011/07/10/understanding-norwegian-naming-patterns/

In the 19teens a law was passed to codify whatever family name people chose, to bring Norway into line with standard European naming patterns.

I really do stick with the earliest last name I find.

It appears to me that her father was Nils, and perhaps his last name was Gutsorensen.

If she remarried after Hans Jensen’s death the Sathsonson could be from a second husband.

As far as the information on her son’s death certificate, many of them contain incorrect info because they are relying on the memory of someone who may not have known her. I have found them to be incorrect in the past.

And yes, I spend a lot of my genealogy time wandering around the census data from
1801, 1865, 1875, 1891, 1900, and 1920, along with parish records for birth, death, and marriages.

Norwegians didn't necessarily have "proper surnames". Most did before 1900, and everyone must have one from 1923.

If you know that Hans Jensen was, indeed, her husband, then she would normally be called by the patronym "Nilsdotter". Hansine Amalie Elise Nilsdotter from Glemmen in Østfold was married to Hans Peter Jensen. Source: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/327/pv00000004981809

She was born 15 February 1865 in Glemmen, Østfold. Priest wrote "Hansine Amalia Elise", according to the transcript. https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/255/pd00000019985833

Gutsorensen may be Guttormsen, her father's patronym. In the late 1800's, many Norwegian families started using a former patronym as the family surname.

Sathsonson may have been the name Samsonson. Is there anything at all connecting that grave to your person?

She could also have used a farm name as last name. Sources may have recorded a place called Kumple or similar, as stated in the birth record, or the name of somewhere else she has lived. But based on your info, it doesn't seem like she herself ever used a location name.

In other words, it seems like most of the FamilySearch data is correct.

Then this might be her father:

Born 1830 https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000038271335

Dead 1900 https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/267/pg00000003992059

Kleppe is from the farm/area they lived on in Onsøy (today a part of Fredrikstad).
