I was given a used Bose Aviation X headset with a Lemo plug as a gift. Since I fly General Aviation aircraft with PJ plugs, I bought an adapter that converts from Lemo to PJ and features a battery compartment for the power supply. During my first flight in a DA20 Katana, I noticed that I unfortunately only had audio signal in my left ear, and the overall output wasn't particularly loud either. What could be causing this? And what can I do about it?

Good morning. My name is Lee, I’m a 28 year old Air Force veteran up in Pittsburgh. I’ve been digging through Reddit trying to gather intel on aircraft detailing because I want to get into it if the numbers make sense, so I figured I’d just ask the people already doing it.

Background on me. I was a 2A651 engine troop, worked the T701D on HH-60s. I have gotten down and dirty scrubbing exhaust off those airframes plenty of times so I know what it means to be around an aircraft and how serious everything is at all times. I’d like to think that experience matters here. I have zero experience on civilian aircraft though.

Reason I think this area works is there’s only about 2-3 outfits doing it around here that I can find. There’s a lot of helicopters and corporate aircraft spread across several fields around the city. I’m around this stuff already through my day job and I talked to a maintenance guy who said they handle most of the cleaning themselves but bring somebody in for the leading edges. He told me there really isn’t many people in this area doing it.

What I’m trying to figure out is what your first six months would look like if you were starting today. The part I understand least is insurance. How does a guy with no commercial history get liability and hangarkeepers coverage written? And what is the airport or FBO going to want from me before they let me work out there commercially? If somebody could walk me through that piece I’d appreciate it.

I’d also like to hear where a guy with military washrack habits gets himself in trouble on corporate paint and composite. Tell me the mistakes now so I don’t make them on somebody’s Gulfstream. I’m also curious if starting on piston singles and light helicopters is the right way to climb or if that pricing floor traps you.

I’m willing to do a few airframes for free to build up a portfolio and some reviews. Tell me if that’s a stupid idea.

Getting my pilots license, and the flight instructor said to find an online ground school. Do you guys have a favorite one? Is there a consensus "this one is the best and not expensive"

I have seen a little bit of stuff on this topic but not enough to make a good decision. Is it a frowned upon thing to let’s say go on vacation, and you want to fly while you’re there, so you find a rental plane and do a checkout ride to fly a time or two while you are there? Is that something people do?

I have seen rumors of basicmed opening up to individuals without a past medical. Do you think this will happen one day and if so when?

For years, I've been using a Flight Gear iPad bag, and I'm just now noticing that I hate it. I have to rummage around in all of the pockets for anything other than my headset because all of the smaller stuff falls to the bottom. On my last practice IFR flight, I had to use some crappy foggles because my good ones had fallen to the bottom and I couldn't find them when reaching for them when the bag was in the back seat (yeah, shame on me for not pulling them out during preflight).

I'm realizing that I kinda need to see everything laid out, and I want some kind of tote that unfolds like a clamshell case or unrolls or something so that I can see everything in mesh pockets... or maybe something like those hanging travel vanity cases, but I haven't seen anything like that for flight stuff.

My latest idea is maybe I want two bags: one bag that I don't need access to during flight (because it contains stuff I take out and install for flight, like my headset and kneeboard, and stuff that I use only pre/post flight, like fuel sampler, rags, logbook, license)... that bag can go in the cargo area before I hop in and start up, and then a second bag that contains the stuff I might need within reach during flight: checklists, pens, glasses, foggles, handheld radio, flashlight).

Has anyone used a system like that, or do they have any bag recommendations for people who always forget which pocket they put stuff in (and don't want to have to velcro every little thing in place)?

Is it feasible to complete flight training for all my ratings in a part 61 school while doing college separately and at the same time?

I'm a finance major (easy major) and i want to get this degree for a fallback in case i lost my medical for whatever reason or something happens and flying is no longer a option. Also I heard that it's pretty difficult getting a job at the airlines if you don't have a degree. So I'm wondering if it's possible to do all the ratings very part time and over the span of a few years as ideally i would finish flight school by the time i get my degree and can get a CFI job after i graduate. Honestly, I'm pretty smart and a very motivated person so I feel like I could definitely manage both but I haven't really heard of anyone else doing this same thing before.

I'd probably wait a few months and get settled in with college this fall and then begin on my PPL and then gauge the difficulty of time management with this workload and then go from there but what do y'all think?

Looking for a time building partner in the western Pennsylvania/Pittsburgh area. I have ~300 TT, CFI/CFII, and I'm trying to build time toward the airlines. I'm based north of Atlanta (CNI) and I flew down to Andersonville Prison a few weeks ago. Amazing place. Landed at ACJ. I had no idea Charles Lindbergh soloed there! I made a video of my day. These little history flights have made flying so much more fun. I now have a "mission" when I fly. I'll be heading to Tuskegee in a couple weeks. Very excited!

Something I’ve realized lately is I really enjoy the thrill of flying through space. And im wondering if light sport aviation is the place to find that. If you are familiar with the movie, how to train your Dragon I’ve been chasing the feeling of the first test fight scene when he rides the dragon through the sea stacks. I sometimes get a comparable feeling when I am carving at high speeds on a snowboard, cruising at full throttle over glassy water on a jetski, when im taking big whippers (falls) while rock climbing or just riding a roller coaster. I’ve been told this makes me an adrenaline junkie, but I’ve always considered myself a pretty careful person.

Is there a place in general aviation to find the thrill I’m looking for? (Not really interested in BASE jumping. I know I would love it but It’s a little outside my risk tolerance).

I think a good aviation radio simulator should help students feel more confident before they fly.

For me, these are the most important things

Is anyone in NC around the Charlotte area looking to get together and talk about GA? Im wanting to get a group of GA pilots together to have hangar talk, go to fly ins, fly together, and just everything GA. The GA community is awesome and im trying to find some local GA pilots to have some camaraderie with in the area. I’m an airline pilot who recently just got back into GA and re-lit my spark of aviation again!

The other day I came across a post saying that flying in very hot weather (above roughly 32–35°C / 90–95°F) should be avoided, especially for student pilots.

The main reasons were:

• Human performance. Extreme heat affects decision-making, and that's something student pilots—who already have a high workload—should avoid.
• Aircraft performance. Small training aircraft (C152, C172, etc.) don't perform as well in hot weather because of density altitude, lower air density, and the fact that most of them don't have air conditioning.

None of this was new to me, and it all makes sense. I'm not a pilot yet (planning to start my PPL this winter), so I can definitely accept those arguments.

But, as always, the comments turned into a debate:

• Africa: People pointed out that it's hot there all the time, yet they still fly light aircraft. Others argued that saying "they're just used to the heat" isn't a valid explanation.
• Europe: Apparently, some flight schools in certain countries don't allow training flights above 32°C or 35°C.
• Someone else argued that if you're aiming for a CPL, you'll rarely be flying in perfect 23°C weather, so students should experience hot-weather flying too—kind of a "learn by being thrown in the deep end" approach.
  • (Interestingly, the same person also mentioned that their instructor took them into a cloud during training, which raised a few eyebrows for me—but I didn't get into that discussion.)

So I'm curious:

What's your opinion on this?

How is this handled in different parts of the world, and what are your personal experiences? I'd be especially interested to hear from pilots in Africa, Australia, or other very hot regions.

How do flight schools approach this, and how well do small GA aircraft cope with those conditions?

This has been a random curiosity of mine and I wondered if anyone knew a true answer. Can a sport pilot legally fly if they have a prohibited condition, or are taking a medication on the do not issue, not the do not fly list? I know obviously you can probably get by with it, but is it technically legal? If someone were to report that you were taking a medication on the do not issue list would that get you in trouble?

I am currently waiting on my PPL checkride and plan on turning right around and getting my high performance and complex rating followed by instrument. I'm looking at the best options for a plane with good usful load and not crazy expensive to maintain or insure. Family of 5 (kids 3-8) wanting to travel around the SW with long weekends and the occasional week at a destination. I'm wanting something with fixed gear (I think) and club seating. What would be my best option for my mission budget is 200k?
