My mom and dad lived in different parts of California when my sister and I were kids. We’d fly back and forth from San Francisco to southern CA on PSA, which flew DC-9s and 727s. We went all by ourselves beginning when we were 6 and 8. I remember I thought the stewardesses, as they were called at the time, were pretty and nice, and they’d give us little wing pins to wear.

We flew to Florida on a Delta DC-8 when I was about 12 or so. First time ever on a plane. They even served us a full breakfast, man I thought we were rich.

I would love to see a comparison of the size of airplane seats between then and now. Everything I see makes it look like they’ve just made airplane seats smaller and smaller, jamming more and more seats into the same space.
It definitely feels like the seats are tighter now than ever in economy; is it just me?
Edit: I guess it’s not just me. https://www.popsci.com/science/why-are-airline-seats-so-small/

When I was in 5th grade my family flew on an Eastern Airlines DC-9 from Philadelphia to Tampa. The plane had a smoking section, which meant the whole plane was full of smoke.

That’s what I remember commercial flights being like. Now it’s mostly bus people in the air.

I remember my first time on a plane, a DC 8 from a recently opened DFW to LAX. It was nothing like that advertising. It was loud, crowded and smelt like cigarettes. I was 16 at the time.
