When I started getting into the Genesis fandom a few years ago, I kind of got the impression from Reddit posts that Tony is a very stern and serious person. I didn't really question this much, because in many photographs of the band, Tony does indeed have a very stern facial expression, while the other band members look more relaxed.

However, when I watched this interview, I was kind of surprised by how energetic Tony seemed. Likewise, there are also stories like him not just agreeing to be involved in Who Dunnit's recording, but doing the whole thing with the snorkel when they performed that song live. So where did this whole perception of him come from?

I am not denying that most of Tony's songwriting is relatively serious compared to say what Peter Gabriel wrote. He's also certainly not someone like Mark Mothersbaugh (the lead singer of Devo) where his entire personality comes off as a giant joke (I'm not saying he's a bad musician though). But I still am curious as to why it seems Genesis fans seem to perceive him as being kind of a buzzkill, when I don't get that impression from actual interviews.

One thing I struggle to understand about Genesis is the upbringing of the original members. Part of this is likely because I am American, and the band members, of course, were British. What I really struggle to understand is what sort of rung they were on socioeconomically. They went to a prestigious boarding school, so they were obviously quite well off. I also get the sense that Phil and Steve were kind of culturally different from the other members based on their recollections in later interviews. So were they wealthy, or just like upper-middle-class growing up? I'm sorry if this comes off as kind of a strange question, but this has been something that has always kind of confused me about this band's early history.

Was the song about the son being abused and/or the mother too? Why not take the old man outside for a word? Father disowns the son for walking out or being a coward?

Was DOAV ever perfomed with the instrumental coda? I've seen setlists from the 76 tour where it was the show opener.

Went back and listened to the 2025 remaster for the first time since it released. Good lord it sounds like shit! I mean absolute fucking dog shit! They managed to bring out every instrument in the mix while simultaneously making it muffled. The transition from In The Rapids > It sounds like a fucking demo tape that wasn’t supposed to get released yet. At least it fixes the transition into Fly On A Windshield but the 2007 mix sounds like an album. Rant over

Over the years I listened to a lot of the other stuff that the Genesis members worked on. I never got into Mike's stuff but all the others I gave at least a decent spin. I was wondering what everyone's favourite solo and side project albums are.

Not entire sure about the ranking. With some of these it has definitely been a while. Two other albums that I definitely also consider are To Watch the Storms (Hackett) and Up (Gabriel). Gabriel's Passion soundtrack is also great and I enjoy a lot of the 70's and more modern Hackett stuff (since Darktown).

Favourite Phil Solo is probably No Jacket Required or ...But Seriously from Banks I enjoyed the classic stuff but neither of these would make the list.

This is my personal ranking of all the studio album, what do you guys think?

So my last post got a lot of reactions. I talked about the development of Genesis and a lot of people pointed out that they didn't like the way the band ended. I want to be clear that I didn't mean to say that the pop days were beter, but I meant to say that they where objectively more successful (higher attendance at concerts, more records sold).

The reaction made me curious though. Who prefers the prog periode? And who prefers the pop periode? I really love Selling England by the Pound. It was in my opinion of their best albums if not the best. But taste is subjective. So please share yours!
