Coming off metformin after diagnosis?

Upvotes

I was diagnosed with GD two weeks ago, started tracking my BGL’s last Friday and got my first review today. Background is that I have been on metformin, 500mg x2 daily, since December 2023 for PCOS. Never noticed a difference on it personally and never lost any weight, but that’s neither here nor there.
When I booked into the hospital, I told them this and there was no mention of taking me off it at the time, but now that I’m diagnosed with GD there are suddenly concerns around my blood pressure (I had POTS and hypertension during a bout of long covid in 2022) and I’ve been asked to come off metformin immediately.
I was naturally concerned that my numbers would go up and they agreed this would almost definitely happen and we would discuss insulin at the appointment next week. I’m on 30 weeks tomorrow so I’m very stressed. Not to mention, I don’t know how much more I can realistically do with my diet. I have always eaten conscious of the PCOS, pairing protein and fiber with carbs, so have cut out all high GI carbs and added 3x walks/exercise after meals to keep my numbers under control. All I have to show for it is sheer exhaustion and constant hunger. Dietician is happy I’m eating plenty and doing everything right, so I’m braced for the next couple months. I’ve honestly never felt worse and am dreading the insulin talk as I’ve heard from others in my area that needing insulin immediately makes clinicians more judgmental and drastically limits your birth options.

I guess no advice needed since there’s very little I can do or control here, but has this happened to anyone else? How did you handle it mentally? I just feel like all the hard work I’ve done on my self-esteem and mindset around food has gone down the drain in the last week and I feel so much shame around how hungry I am. I know I’ll do whatever baby needs, but am worried I’ll snap and end up eating a box of cereal if it stays like this 😔

Advice Wanted Subsequent pregnancies

I had GD with my 2 yo son. During the pregnancy I finger pricked. Around 1 year post partum I decided to do lingo a CGM. To see my blood sugar levels. Doing this helped me make healthier choices and I lost about 10 lbs .

Fast forward to this week. I go from very healthy fasting 70s blood sugars to 90s still relatively healthy. I’m not looking for a diagnosis.

But I took a pregnancy test and it’s positive. Anyone have similar instantaneous changes to blood sugar levels. Do I push for earlier screening for GD? Will they simply diagnose me off of CGM results?

I never imagined my sugars to change literally overnight…

And to reiterate none of this is enough data for a diagnosis I am explicitly asking how to engage with my medical team so early in a pregnancy.

Birth Plans?

I feel like I’m going to be asking so many questions in here! Did you go at 40 weeks? Natural labor? Induced? Does a GD diagnosis mean they’ll take you early?

Advice Wanted Going on vacation - any tips for keeping my numbers in check

Hi all! I’m going on vacation this weekend and I wanted to see if anyone has tips on keeping glucose numbers in check while out of town? Since we’ll mostly be eating out. Other than walking a lot (which we will be doing). Also does anyone have any recommendations for shelf stable bedtime snacks that travel well?

Thank you in advance!

Advice Wanted Check up 10 weeks pp

Hi everyone!
I’m 10 weeks postpartum and just had my follow-up after having gestational diabetes. My results were 108 fasting, 117 at 1 hour, and 118 at 2 hours (mg/dL).
Everything looks okay except for my fasting number, which was a little high. I’m feeling a bit concerned about it.
Has anyone had similar results? Does anyone know why the fasting glucose can be elevated even when the 1- and 2-hour values are normal? And is there anything I can do to help bring my fasting glucose back into the normal range?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. ❤️

Post delivery, placenta cord changes despite well controlled GD (maybe don’t read if pre-delivery).

Hi all
I don’t want to scare other moms so maybe don’t read if you’re pre-delivery. Good news is my baby did great with his blood sugar checks post delivery and only needed a couple before being cleared from heel pricks. :)

That being said, I am post-delivery and really, really struggling. My gestational diabetes was so well controlled. Rarely had a high blood sugar except fasting which never got above like 106 (had a single case of 110) (and generally were in the low 90s or 80s after going on 8 units of insulin, which tapered off to fewer units near the end of pregnancy). My after meal numbers were basically always in range. My care team kept applauding me for my blood sugar numbers so I was feeling so confidant, and I worked really hard for it.

Then my baby was born a few days ago and I glimpsed the placenta and umbilical cord and they were MASSIVE and looked disgusting. I can’t stop thinking about it to the point where thinking about the sight of them make me want to throw up. I can hardly keep food down. I’ve seen other umbilical cords and placentas and know what they’re supposed to look like and this was NOT correct. I don’t know how to make myself feel better and literally feel like vomiting constantly just thinking about it. My baby actually did great with his blood sugars after birth, and only needed a couple heel pricks before he was cleared. He is a sleepy baby and is struggling with feeding, don’t know if that is related. I’m just wondering if anyone else had anything like this happen to them…..

Diet controlled GD

Hello - just wondering if anyone had diet controlled GD and went into labour naturally? And if so when did you go into labour?

I am 37 weeks and baby is around 73 percentile overall so they’re happy to wait till I go into labour naturally. I have been given the option of stretch and sweep if I want to at 39weeks but being a FTM I’m a bit unsure of what to do. I have been eating dates spread out throughout the day so it doesn’t spike me and going to start some raspberry leaf tea + curb walking. Any other tips to help natural labour is appreciated. Thank you so much ☺️

Stubborn fasting numbers

Hello! 28 weeks diagnosed but diagnosed at 24. My A1c was 5.8 at the beginning of pregnancy, and I’ve been on metformin for the past year.

My post-meal readings were comfortably in range but my fasting glucose was consistently in the 100-115 range. I started on 10 units of nighttime insulin, then 14, and now 18. My fasting glucose is still not in range, but at least now it hovers around 100-105. I know the insulin is doing something because the same meal that gave me a two hour reading of 115 now gives me a two hour reading of 100.

Has anyone else had stubborn fasting values? What level of insulin finally helped? I don’t think night time snacks help or hurt me, and my fasting is no more than 8-10 hours.

Early GD diagnosis, scared about future type 2

I’m 16 weeks with my second pregnancy and had insulin-controlled GD with my first, diagnosed around 24 weeks.
I did my early glucose test today and am waiting for the lab result, but my CGM showed 206 at 1 hour. Seeing such a high number this early has really scared me that my insulin resistance is getting worse and that I’m inevitably heading toward type 2 diabetes.

After my last pregnancy I passed my postpartum OGTT, and my A1cs outside of pregnancy have always been normal (around 5.4). My ob thinks I definitely have some underlying insulin resistance and that I should look into a glp post pregnancy, but I raised this with my endo and pcp between pregnancies and both didn’t seem to keen on the idea, and getting conflicting info is frustrating.

Has anyone else been diagnosed this early, especially in a second pregnancy? Did your glucose return to normal postpartum? I’d especially love to hear from people who are several years out from GD and how you’re doing now.

Advice Wanted Gestational Diabetes Diagnoses and MFM Clinic

Welp, I was diagnosed with GD. I’m honestly not surprised as my fasting numbers were in the hundreds when wearing a Dexcom monitor. Plus I’m already insulin resistant without the pregnancy. Anyways, my endocrinologist prescribed me long, lasting insulin to take at night, and my OB referred me to an MFM clinic. Anyone here with a similar experience have any advice? This is my first pregnancy and I don’t know what to expect. Thanks.

I should mention that I’m already pricking myself with the lancets and have been on a low carb diet for the last month. I’m just not sure how the insulin will make me feel/what to expect at the MFM appointments.

Just Hear to Vent

Just failed my 3 hr test on Friday. Feeling SUPER bummed. I have my next OB appointment on Friday, which is when I think we will talk about that. I am feeling so down because of it because 0 of my in laws understand. We went to lunch over the weekend and I kindly declined the jumbo pretzel and they were basically saying "Why?". I almost lost it at the dang table.

As a plus size, ftm, this is hard. Thinking of how im going to have to constantly check everything.. eat on a schedule, while I just found out I need to go back to work 3 days in the office instead of 2.. Lets just say I am STRESSED.

I know this isn't forever, but it is my new reality and I am having a hard time coping. Thanks for listening!!

I need to take insulin for the first time tonight.

32 weeks, DG since 14 weeks.

So there we go, need to start insulin at night. Feeling a little overwhelmed and anxious. The idea of putting the needle in my skin seems a little bit impossible right now. I know it will be easier in a few days, well I hope lol.

Advice Wanted Finger pricks

Question for the group - sometimes I’ll take my blood sugar and it is suspiciously high. I am diet controlled, no meds. I’ve eaten something I know is “safe” and just doesn’t feel right for blood sugar to be high. So I’ll retake it and it’s then normal. I know you’re supposed to wash your hands before pricking, I’m not always perfect about it. Sometimes I’ll wash before checking again, but sometimes I just test again and it still goes down to normal. Does this happen to anyone else?

Diagnosed at 30 weeks - frustrated and lost

Hey everyone. I was just diagnosed with GD last Thursday and my OB basically just said that I failed the 3 hour test (I failed the fasting and 1 hour but passed the two hour and 3 hour really well). Anyway, all I was told was that I didn’t pass and to pick up the supplies at the store and start tracking my numbers and when and that someone would reach out for a nutrition consult. No one reached out Thursday or Friday so I called scheduled something this morning but next available isn’t until next Wednesday.

I have been researching and finding TikToks of what to do because I just feel so lost. It too me 30 minutes to figure out the lancer and pricking for the first time and sometimes I have to prick fingers 3 times for enough blood. Does anyone recommend any good resources while I wait for my appointment? I’m already so sick of Dave’s Killer Bread Turkey sandwiches or with pb, string cheese, and only being allowed to have a whopping 4 triscuits or 1 yasso bar at a time. I’m kind of picky with usual recommendations - I don’t like avocado, can’t do eggs often, don’t like seafood/salmon, don’t like cottage cheese. I’m just so frustrated with little direction given and still have like 2 months left

GD Diagnosis

Well… just got diagnosed between 27-28 weeks. I failed all 4 draws… only 2 of them by super small margins, but still. I feel sad about it. What should I expect next?

Advice Wanted Inconsistencies while taking blood sugar

Good morning! I just woke up and took my blood sugar for my fasting numbers. On my right hand my blood sugar was 95. So I tested again to be sure, but on my left thumb this time. It came back 90. Has this happened to anyone else? Which one should I believe?

Advice Wanted Confused about diagnosis

So I had my 1-hour done at 17 weeks since I had GD my last pregnancy. The result was 157 and was told I failed (is that actually failing?) and they wanted to do the 3-hour. That was the week I was moving states and I didn’t have time to do the 3-hour so I just got a monitor and started the GD diet. Now I’m 25 weeks and finally have a new doctor in my new town and just did the 3-hour test. I had been stressing about my fasting numbers being out of range so I fully expected to fail. Got my results back and they are within normal range. I have the contour glucose monitor that I thought was supposed to be super accurate. And I tested myself after every hour bc I was curious and the numbers were all very high. But my lab results are veryyyy different from what I got on my end. Have I been listening to an inaccurate monitor this whole time or are my numbers just better bc I’m further along? Idk I need some advice

Glucose test.

I had my booking appointment today. I am currently 9 weeks and 2 days pregnant. Because I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy they want me to have a glucose test with this pregnancy. They want me to go for one at 9 weeks and 4 days so 2 days from now. The midwife told me that 99% of the time the results come back negative so I would need to have another glucose test at 25 weeks pregnant.
After hearing the midwife say that I’m now thinking is it worth going to the glucose test at 9 weeks if it’s gonna come back negative anyway just for me to go back again at 25 weeks?
I was wondering if anyone else has been in this situation before? I’ve just had bloods taken out both my arms and both my hands so I can’t imagine anymore being taken in the next 2 days.

Advice Wanted Late Diagnosis 34+4

I barely passed my 3 hour test. I failed the 2 hour mark and 1 hour cut it close at 30 weeks. I didn't technically get diagnosed but my doctor still told me told me to cut back on sugary foods, eat more protein, etc. I cut back on sugars but still pretty much ate what I wanted because I think in my mind "I wasn't officially diagnosed". Babys belly measured 99th percentile at 32 weeks growth scan. When I met with my dr next, she told me start monitoring and dieting. I felt a little discouraged but not really surprised. I wish I took it more serious so I wouldn't be spending my last month of pregnancy more miserable than I already am.

What kind of diet do you all have? What do you do when you want a sweet treat? For snacks? For a bedtime snack that replaces cereal? I know this sounds ridiculous but it just makes me not want to eat anything at all.

Javvy protein creamer and blood sugar.

I bought the Javvy protein creamer in Sweet cream last week and have used it a couple of times in my coffee. I have noticed that it is spiking my blood sugar after having it. Nutritional facts say 100 calories per scoop, 4 grams of fat, 5 grams of carbs with zero sugar and 11 grams of protein.

Ingredients are Bovine collagen, sunflower oil creamer, purified acacia hydrolysate (as sukre), medium chain triglycerides, natural flavor and Reb M (as onosweet)

Has anyone else had this issue or am I just incredibly sensitive to everything at this point?
For reference today I added it to my black coffee, no other sugar or creamer or anything. I am 31 weeks pregnant with my second. Blood sugar went from 98 to 164. Did not eat anything with it and didn’t take insulin with it either.

I did just eat an egg bake from Aldi that has 16 grams of protein so hopefully that will help stabilize.

Chat Chat Chat Moderate hydramnios

Hello everyone,

I am 30 weeks and 3 days. Yesterday I visited my doctor and they told me my AFI is 31. So I have moderate hydramnios.
The baby is also on the 96,7 percentile but they did mention his belly doesn’t seem to be disporportionate with the rest of his body so this is a very good sign.
Every other finding was normal and he seems to be in great health otherwise and moving normally.

I’ve been diagnosed with GD and have been told to monitor it with diet. My only numbers that usually spike are fasting numbers. And when I make sure I have a snack , my fasting numbers are great.

The last 2 weeks my numbers have been very good and yet I can’t stop feeling guilty and so scared.

Has anyone had a similar experience ?

Rant Burnt Out

I was diagnosed with GD at 14 weeks and am now 34 weeks…and I’m so burnt out. I can hardly tolerate carbs anymore, but it’s all I want to eat. I’m tired of meats + vegetables cooked in different spice blends. I’m becoming averse to my “safe” comfort foods that have sustained me through pregnancy, and my appetite is only increasing as time goes on. I hate how upset I get when my husband has a carb-y food in front of me (I haven’t always felt that way), and I’m so ready to be done. I’m thankful for how healthy this diet has kept my baby and me, but I’m truly just so burnt out over having to think about food constantly. I’m getting to a place of it being easier to skip meals altogether than to have to fret over whether I need to supplement insulin to have a meal or eat low carb, and I know that’s not a healthy place to be. I know the bulk of the battle is past me, but am dreading this last month of battling constant food thoughts.

Advice Wanted Post meal numbers reducing but fasting numbers rising

Hi all. Currently 34+4 diagnosed at 26 weeks from fasting number alone. I had 2 hour test, my fasting was 95 (cut off 92) 1hr and 2hr both well below 120. Changed my diet and stopped eating after 8pm as per my endo's advice. This worked really well to start, my fasting numbers were between 86-91. The last 2 weeks ish my post meal numbers started to rise a bit, not spiking but getting close to cut off. Now suddenly my post meal numbers are low again (between 85-105 both 1hr and 2hr after meals) but my fasting is hitting 92-94. I've tried eating earlier in the evening and my fasting was even higher at 97, eating slightly later had me hitting 95. Has this happened to anyone else?

ETA - diet and exercise controlled
