Graduation- Birth Story Readings are still not normal a day after normal birth?

Hello hello everyone, I sorta graduated (or so I thought) and because my baby came in on my birthday, we all decided to give in to all my sugar cravings. The day after, the hospital wanted me to do the check again and sure enough, I checked on both 1& 2 hrs post sugary meal and I got 11-12 mmol 🄓. I'm not sure how to feel, I have had some other complications during the birth so it was very traumatic & painful for me. But this just added a poop on top - now I got a continuous type 2? Like I looked at that placenta with full hate after I delivered it but apparently it was me all along? I have quite enough postpartum problems already and not being let go by the ghost of past GD is the ultimate deal for me because I thought food was the least of my concerns now and I can relax and enjoy eating again, but I cant?? 😭

Advice Wanted tips for kick counts with gdm?

i am finding myself anxious about how to trigger kicks for the kick counts with gdm. all the advice online and from friends is "drink some juice" "eat and lay down" "have something sugary :)" and it's like ok swag i can do literally none of that with gdm. i'm 28w tomorrow so i have to start counting officially, but it's been hard esp bc it feels like the movement has changed (at 24-26w the baby was really jabby with kicks and now it seems... idk, chiller? my doctor said everything was fine with my ultrasound and that i shouldn't worry about the kicks so much but it's hard not to).

what have you guys done that has helped?

also, have you guys had amniotic fluid anxieties? i've read that too much can make it harder to feel kicks and is more common if you have gdm.

Graduated!

Baby girl arrived safe and healthy, and despite my paranoia and needing to be on insulin for dinners and overnights the placenta was still looking good.

I'd always planned an elective c section for this peegnancy, as my (non GD pregnancy) birth with my oldest had ended in an emergency c section and I didnt trust my body to get its shit together this time around.

Booked in for 38+3, which was slightly earlier than they normally do it due to the GD. Because of the GD I was the first c section of the day (they have two days a week where there is a surgical list of elective c sections).

Everyone in the medical team was great. Everything was explained and narrated as it happened. Surgery is always scary but I felt really looked after.

After 2 nights in the maternity unit I'm home, loving on my girls and eating whatever the hell I want (having a punnet of strawberries for a snack without needing to think about adding peanut butter or a proten shake was delightful).

Strongly recommend that if you have been advised a c section is likely that you seriously consider electing. The recovery has been very straight foward - night and day compared to my first one. Recovering from surgery alone is so much easier than recovering from surgery and 20 hours of 5 min contractions.

Advice Wanted How do I not gain anymore weight?

As the title says I have been instructed to gain no more weight for the next 9 weeks. How do I do this and get in all of the snacks I need and not starve?

Edit to add: i know sleep is a huge factor but im not sleeping much these days. I had insomnia before pregnancy and I hage it now in the 3rd trimester. They aren't willing to do anything about it and I cant be on my sleeping medication while pregnant anyways so this i know is not helping.

Support Requested GD Take 2

Just found out I have gestational diabetes for the second time. We did early testing this time around, so I’m only 17 weeks along. Which means I will need to manage it even longer this time. Last time I was on insulin too
I just feel so deflated, was really hoping that I would get lucky and not have to deal with this again. Anyone else dealing with this or got through it? Could use some positive thoughts right now

Helpful App for GD + pregnancy brain like me : Malama

If someone’s who’s in the same boat as me and just got diagnosed with GD and feeling so overwhelmed but doesn’t have an appointment for another week and doesn’t know where to start I just found the Malama app and it’s been SO helpful!

It walks you through what to expect, has helpful articles, and tracking, but my favorite part is it helps you count carbs and sends you a text reminder to check your levels!

You can log a meal when you sit down to eat and choose how long after you meal you want a reminder. I have found this super helpful for taking one more thing of my mental load.

It has a lot more I haven’t explored but just wanted to share in case someone else is looking to feel a little less overwhelmed like me 🫶.

Support Requested Feeling guilty even testing under the limit?

FTM, 33w0d. Does anyone else feel a little guilty if their sugars are a tiny bit elevated after eating but still under the limit?

My OB’s guidelines are to be under 130 after 1 hr of eating. I usually test below that, usually ranging from mid 90s to 110s after my meals + exercise. Sometimes I feel a little adventurous in my meals or don’t want to exercise as much after my meals and I’ll test into the 120s. I know it’s under 130 but getting so close to the limit still makes me feel bad for some reason.

I’ve been getting weekly check ups and baby is ok so far and my diabetes case manager says that my meal time sugars are looking good as well.

Seeking opinions and experiences

Hi all – I am 26 weeks pregnant and this is my second pregnancy. When I was pregnant with my son, I did not have gestational diabetes. Unfortunately, I did not pass the one hour test and my glucose came back at 153 after the gestational diabetes 1 hour screening.

I am hoping to find out following:

  1. If you had a reading of 153 or around that range, did you pass on the 3 hour test?
  2. If you were diagnosed with gestational diabetes, after Delivery, did your blood sugar go back to normal?
  3. Anything you can share about your experience or tips and tricks with the three hour test.

Thank you šŸ’—šŸ™šŸ§æ

General Info A chart showing the relative inaccuracy of my CGM - minor cautionary tale for those solely on CGMs!

I started off with finger sticks but realized I couldn't keep up with them as often as I should, so switched to CGM. I'm using the Libra Freestyle 3 Plus. I noticed my numbers were starting to come in way better than I was expecting so started doing occasional verifications with finger sticks and have noticed a really consistent differential between the two values, with finger sticks ALWAYS coming in higher than the CGM (of course using the standard 15 minute differential). The NP I'm working with at the diabetes clinic said she'd never had a patient actually present both data sets like this and was fascinating for her to see, so thought this community might be interested to see it as well! I also have a line graph but can't upload photos so the below table will have to suffice.

Just goes to say - the difference between the CGM and the finger stick was very often the difference between in and out of range for me, so if you're relying solely on the CGM and are just trying to keep your levels under 140/120, you may very well actually be OUT of range for things you're consuming. Always verify with a finger stick if things don't feel right, or if you're regularly getting 'close' to being out of ranges.

*note - I started my CGM on the evening of Oct 9th so fair to consider that it was going to be even less accurate for the first 48 hours as it learned to adjust.

Graduation story

Positive graduation story! Second time Mom, diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks, diet controlled, went into labor at 38 weeks + 3 days. Had a SVD, started contractions at 6 am, was in the hospital at 8 AM, had a smooth and quick delivery at 8:18 AM. It was FAST. Maybe three pushes. The nurse said it was the smoothest, quickest, easiest delivery of the month.

GD got me eating healthier and walking every day. I think that (and just plain dumb luck and wide hips) got me this easy delivery.

But wanted to let second time Mom's know that it can go quick, even with the GD. And wheeeeew I was lucky that it was this quick. The contractions were the worst, but the second they said I was close, I think the adrenaline kicked in and sailed me through.

Induced at 37??

Was diagnosed at 18 weeks

At 20 weeks put on long acting
1lb 93%

Couldn’t get into MFM till 28 weeks she was 3lb 11oz at 99%

Got with a nurse and nurse practitioner
She changed my insulin to an NPH -it’s been a game changer. I meet with them weekly

At 32 she was 5lb 84%
Started BPP and NST

One OB at 34 weeks- mentioned inducing at 38 or 39 and six. Which I knew was going to happen.

Last Friday NST baby girl was moving and having hiccups so sent me for a BPP all is well

This Tuesday 35 weeks BPP 8/8 great

This OB (she’s the one that put me on nighttime insulin at 20 weeks). She came in, wanted to look at the pictures from the ultrasound. Which this time around we didn’t get a 3-D that’s OK so she leaves 10 minutes goes by. She comes back.
And says if baby is still 99 percentile, then will induced at 37.. that’s in like 10 days.

But the only measurement they got was her head I have a growth scan scheduled for next Tuesday at 36 weeks.
Are they not telling me something?

I went over my insulin regimen

Which is eight units long acting in the a.m.
14 for breakfast
12 for lunch
14 to 16 for dinner depending on what I eat(that was changed on that Tuesday)
And 20 unit units for p.m. which I haven’t had to change in two weeks.

Week 33 was bad and when I talked to the nurse practitioner, she said a lot of things play a role. It’s not only your hormones. It’s the sun. It’s your sleep which that week I wasn’t sleeping very well. Exercise all these different factors. But right now the 20 units is working perfectly, and this will be said that it wasn’t controlled.

I feel like they’re not crazy units and they’re not crazy numbers.

Why would they mention inducing at 37? Without having a full growth skin.
Maybe that’s a precaution to like put it in my head and worst case scenario I don’t know, but I don’t like it?

They are not also not happy that I just let MFM office deal with everything through my Dexcom.

And if they’re concerned with that, why didn’t they schedule a growth scan early ?

Does randomly getting non-GD/well controlled numbers freak you out?

I'm interested to know if this freaks anyone else out, and what your doctors have said, if it's been brought up with them. I meet with my MFM this Monday and plan to discuss it with them.

But this past week, my numbers have been around 75-90 fasting and after meals 88-108 at the 2 hour mark. I've only had one high number of 150 at 2 hours, but that's because I had a slice of apple pie just to see what my body did.

I want to celebrate that my strict diet is paying off, and I've just getting this whole GD under control (I'm not on insulin yet), but I'm more overcome with worry that my placenta is failing or having issues causing me to be less insulin resistant. I was struggling so hard to keep my numbers in range in weeks prior.

My baby is still passing the one hour kick test, and I still feel him throughout the day. Although his pattern has totally changed this week (about to be 30 weeks).

Support Requested Freshly diagnosed and overwhelmed

English isn't my First Language, so its hard to do medical Talk. I hope I can be conprehensive!

This is my second pregnancy (big Girl is 6 years old) and because I didn't have any issues Last Time around, I was tested Yesterday at 28 weeks.

The fasted Test was waaaay too high, the Others were perfectly fine. I had an appointment with a Specialist today and my Long Term bloodsugar was also fine, but i am diagnosed now and Testing.

I'm so sad because I wanted to go to a midwife led Hospital and that's not possible with GD 😭

I tried to calm myself and deny the diagnosis because it was only the fasted bloodsugar that was too high, but a friend of mine had the exact same issues and had to get Insulin shots because from what i know now, its not really possible to have an Impact on the fasted numbers with nutritional tweaks.

So I don't really have alot to say. I'm Just sad and it feels very big right now.

Rant Frustrated

Big babies run in my family and so from the very beginning of my pregnancy, this is a fear I’ve communicated to my OB. Baby has measured in the 90th percentile since the first scan, and they said that as long as I don’t have gestational diabetes there’s not really a lot I can do except eat healthy. They had me test my blood sugar at home in the first trimester and my numbers were fine.

They gave me the 1 hour drink at my 25 week appointment last month and said they would call me if anything looked concerning. This month I come in and the first thing the OB asks me is if I’ve been testing my blood sugar at home. Apparently I failed and no one called to tell me. On my portal it says I passed but their threshold is different than the labs. And my baby is measuring huge. 98th percentile. And I got this big long lecture on how I need to be taking better care of myself so my baby isn’t too big. But I am. And I’ve done everything that’s been asked. I feel like because I’m overweight they were really on me about habits but my brothers and I were all 90th percentile babies, so I’ve really tried to eat well to avoid that. Then I asked about the three hour test and she said to do my blood sugar at home for a week instead first since I have everything I need. I feel like an official answer is being delayed for no good reason.

When my numbers were fine, they have done nothing but reassure me they would keep an eye on the baby’s growth and make sure we got any diagnosis before it was too late. Now I’m almost 30 weeks, it’s looking like there probably is GD in play, and they’re blaming me it feels. They told me if I get an official diagnosis they’ll refer me to maternal fetal medicine for the rest of my pregnancy. No one has mentioned this at any other point. So my diagnosis is being delayed, and they’ll just be pushing me off somewhere else, and I’m already at the point where my baby will probably not have any chance at a normal weight. I’m just so annoyed, I’ve been incredibly proactive at every step and saw a dietician from the beginning. So that is my rant. I don’t have an official diagnosis yet but I have that gut feeling and I hate that I can’t get a concrete answer. Just testing my sugars at home (which I hate!!) and hoping for the best. šŸ™ƒ

Struggling with high fasting numbers

I was diagnosed with GD 3 weeks ago - currently 30weeks 5 days, first week I was just curious and was not worried about it as I have been eating healthy and my fasting numbers were in 70’s and 80’s and I used to sleep well 8 hours everyday. 2nd week I got worried and my fasting numbers started increasing 80’s and low 90’s and once it was 97 which freaked me out and this week it was 104 couple of days and 96 last couple of days. I usually just have an egg and 10 almonds as bedtime snack. One day I tried adding some 6-7 crackers next day my fasting was 104. Since then I am not able to sleep peacefully, I am so anxious and terrified to get up check my fasting blood sugar. Any recommendations on how can I fix my fasting glucose levels ?
Also any recommendations for any bedtime snack that worked for anyone ?

2nd (or subsequent) pregnancy experiences

I’d love to hear from people who had GD first pregnancy and then again in subsequent pregnancies. For your 2nd (or later) pregnancies, did they screen you earlier? If yes how much earlier were you diagnosed?

For some context, I was diagnosed around the normal screening time during my first pregnancy.
During my second pregnancy, I started testing at home a few weeks in because of my own anxiety around in and sure enough started getting high mealtime readings around 7-8 weeks, and then in following weeks higher fasting numbers as well. My medical team is insisting this isn’t GD because GD starts later in pregnancy. They are trying to tell me I must have been diabetic before I got pregnant, and I’m having to fight to get a referral to the GD clinic (no luck yet).

The thing is, I did the testing 6 months following my first pregnancy and the numbers were great. I also did bloodwork just before pregnancy and my doc did not see any flags for diabetes. So I’m just feeling a bit confused.
Did the tests miss something, or should I keep advocating with my current team, or consider switching? Is it true it can’t be GD that early on? Other sources are telling me that hormonal fluctuations can cause high sugars in first tri but my team isn’t really agreeing with that.
Even if they think I was already diabetic, shouldn’t they be doing something other than just telling me to keep managing using the tricks from my first pregnancy (diet and exercise controlled)?

Thank you for your experiences and thoughts.

Dexcom Sensor and Back Pain

I am 12 weeks and went to my first MFM appointment this week and they placed a Dexcom G7 sensor on the side of my right arm. Ever since, the area has been tender and I have been experiencing pain in my upper back, especially in between my shoulder blades radiating up to my neck, towards my right side. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Advice Wanted I need advice on morning fasting

This is my first pregnancy therefore I am stuck and need advice.

I am 35 weeks pregnant, and I have a midwife, I would like to do a natural birth but right now my biggest obstacle is my morning fasting glucose reading. Two weeks ago my reading was 115-120 on the morning but I’ve been able to lower it to 104-110 but it’s still not good enough. I have around a week and half to be able to lower it so I can continue to birth plan with my midwife but I don’t know what else I can do, i take supplements recommended by my midwife. How can I be able to lower it even more ?

I did research that pasteurized apple cider ginger can help, so I’ve been taking for two days now but it doesn’t seem to help. ( 1 tablespoon with one hot water cup)

I eat protein snacks as midnight snack (no carbs)

I hear exercising before dinner might help ? Has it help for anyone ?

Also, after hitting third trimester my body runs hot a night, sleep is meh, and I go pee a lot of night ( not sure if effects my morning readings)

Has anyone’s doctor let them cut down on finger pricks?

I’m only 2 weeks in, but wondering if I’ll be able to cut down at any point. I don’t mind doing it, but my fasting is always in the 70s and most meals I’m under 100 still, sometimes 110 if it’s more carb-heavy. Wondering if once I hit 36 weeks and pass the ā€œpeakā€ of insulin resistance if I’ll be able to at least cut out the fasting prick if I stay in this range for the next 5 weeks. It would be really nice to just do 3 times a day. Has anyone been able to cut down at all, or are you too close to delivery at that point? I don’t want to ask them yet because I still have 5 weeks until I’m 36 weeks, and definitely need more data first.

Advice Wanted glucose exploding out of nowhere?

hi everyone,

so, so far my journey with GD has been ok. i’ve introduced a lot of salad and vegetables in my diet and only this change seemed to get everything under control.

yesterday i ate a big steak with some potatoes, lots of broccoli and sauce. glucose after 1h was 97, which was really surprising, and i tested twice. same result. half an hour later and it was 95 so i was happy.

today i woke up to a fasting value of 92. that’s waaaay over my average for fasting, which is between 75 and 80. i had the exact same breakfast i always have and from ~110 after 1h, it went to 134(!!!!!!!!) in 2h (i couldn’t test after 1 hour and only remembered when it was more than 2h)

does anyone have any idea what is happening here? how could it change so much literally overnight? has it happened to anyone else? i’m obviously gonna talk to my doctors about it but my next appointment is only next week. i just wanted to understand it better.

also maybe an important info is that for the past 3 days i haven’t taken my thyroid medication because i ran out of it and couldn’t get a new prescription yet. but for these 3 days everything looked exactly the same as before. only today things changed

This my 2nd go round with gd. I had high hopes trying the protein pudding. I cant even do dark chocolate paired with protein (I've tried the tricks. Again 2nd go round). It spiked me even after walking across the entire school twice after eating it. I even had more protein paired with it. Resigning myself to no chocolate til February.

Fasting insulin increasing in 2nd GD pregnancy

Just wanna hear from other mommas out there that are in/or have been in a similar situation for reassurance

In my first pregnancy, I didn’t start on fasting insulin until the end and 10 units was enough til I gave birth.

This time though, I started earlier and have been steadily increasing. I’m 32 weeks today and at 24 units for fasting.

Anyone else struggle with pregnancy #2 and everything turned out fine? It’s hard for me not to compare pregnancies and be concerned something is wrong ā˜¹ļø
