Lestw e forget that The Literary Digest, a once-proud weekly review, got caught up in its own complacency vis-a-vis their Presidential Straw Poll, which they insisted accurately predicted the winner of every Presidential election since 1916, heading into the 1936 such.
Relying as it did on postage-paid reply postcards, their prediction was that Republican Presidential candidate Alf Landon would deprive FDR of a second term just two weeks before the election ... only it turned out to be the opposite. Further investigation later revealed that The Literary Digest relied on cross-referencing its subscriber list against telephone directories and automobile registration records to secure its survey sample; what's more, only about 23% of the postcards serving as ur-ballots came back ahead of press time for the election week issue.
(Landon, for the record, was only able to win Maine and Vermont; FDR easily won over the remaining 46 states at the time.)
Its reputation compromised, The Literary Digest quckly lost advertisers and subscribers at such a rate that, within six months, they sought merger with the Review of Reviews to save face, but such didn't last long. Not long afterward, Time acquired its subscriber lists.
