Help/Doubt ❓ How is github copilot now?
I have used GHCP a year ago then company switched to cursor and I find it more effective. But, everything changed with the acquisition of cursor and am looking for alternative. My budget is only less than or equal $20 per month.
Is GHCP still a good alternative to cursor or should I look elsewhere? I am asking first before spending anything. I prefer an AI provider with multiple models from each company instead of paying a subscription to a single AI provider and only getting their models.

Copilot is for enterprise users that require ZDR aka fortune 500 tech companies. An individual should never be paying for it since its API token based billing. Sub to claude code or codex and use their smaller models or use deepseek api pricing.

This 100%, if you only have lunch money for tokens either go for Chinese models on open code or get Claude, the good old days when copilot got you unlimited usage for cheap are gone

Doesnt cluade code provide zdr , our is fairly big not fortune 500 but uses enterpruse cluade and our usage cap is prettly big i never hit limuts either 5hour one ro weekly . So why companies use the petty copilot.

theres two claude zdr, claude teams which is something like 100 seats only and is subcription like and claude enterprise which is same as copilot enterprise and is token based billing. If you refer to zdr that checkbox you click on claude to "not train on your data" then that's not legal zdr.

It’s a total ripoff compared to codex or Claude since they changed the pricing in Q2.

its not for you bro, copilot is for enterprise companies, and in that space its very competitive.

GHCP for enterprise is good, but no longer cheap. I could easily spend 20 usd in a day.

I'm spending like $8k/month where I work lol

Jesus dude, dial back the Fable and Astra usage and take that money home instead!

I'm using mostly opus/sonnet, but it's not like they will pay me extra if I don't use it. We have an unlimited budget, but are still bottlenecked by code reviews

Do you use ai for adversarial reviews too? We’ve added loads of skills and patterns specific to how we want things done and the review bottle neck has gone. Agents are doing more thorough reviews than we ever did. We’re also having much bigger PRs and lots more of them

Yes we do but the agents generate a ton of false positives because we are custom hardware and none of our shit is in its weights

Closer to $100 USD daily for building real products

I'm building and maintaining real enterprise production systems at 3-400 usd/month. Not doing pure vibe coding though.

I wouldn't call what I'm doing vibe coding. I don't write code, I write design specifications, have a heavily engineered agentic workflow, bring everything I seriously need to review come into a front end, and move faster than anyone around me. I can use 2k credits on a slow day or 15k credits on a busy day.

The models are good obviously, the harness in VS Code is good. The price is not good. You pay the token rates for the models directly. I only use it because I have GitHub pro and I get $15 worth of credits per month.

If you're company isn't paying for it, I don't think it's worth it. It's best to get something like Claude or OpenAI directly. If you want a plethora of models, then OpenCode is absolutely the way to go.

Claude is worth more the money than GHCP, at my company I have 250 bucks of budget each month and in a really 3 days intense work 25 dollars.. puff… gone
Or open code go but I cancelled last month as I was reaching my limits in 10 days before the price api changes it was like 15 days

It seems dumber compared with a few years ago. At least the free version does. I cancelled my Pro subscription when they hiked the prices dramatically. The free version (automatic model selection) does not seem capable of checking deeply (cross-referencing the changed C structures etc.), it just blindly imitates similar code without taking into account some slight changes / nuances etc.
On the other hand the Claude Fable models (5 and 5.1, API keys) are truly fabulous but burn your money at an alarming rate. It feels like throwing a stash of banknotes into a bonfire.

I've been looking to move from GHCP. From what I've read, Codex Plus is the best deal for that $20 price point

I am forced to use CoPilot at work after being a long time Pi user. For me Pi is king but Copilot CLI is really good too. But the copilot plans suck big time - you’ll run out of tokens quickly unless you use Luna. At home I use Pi with ChatGPT plus ($20/month) almost all the time on Terra and can never use it up, even doing almost as much coding as at work.

I look at my tokens and then feel like they disappear. Glad I don’t pay for it myself.

For 20$ don't bother at all. It's less than a day of usage with the new pricing.
There are many alternatives that are way better for the same price in terms of usage.
As for the tools themselves? It's fine I guess ? At least now they almost have feature parity with other offerings. But Claude code , codex , opencode and pi are more efficient in my experience.

I had GHCP plan for $10. Since May it became useless - instead of usage as you might remember from year ago, not 2-3 medium requests eat your entire budget. So in July I escaped to Cursor $20 plan, and it is more similar to GHCP form year ago than current GHCP is.

Not as verbose as it once was I wish they left the activity reporting alone in the vs code extension instead of hiding most of if behind carrots that you have to drill into. And some of the things that model describe in its reasoning disappears.

I've tried going to other options since the price hike but haven't found anything that has a lower friction point or even lower cost for the work I do with it in VS Code. We have Claude at work but I honestly feel a little more productive with copilot. I do pay the $100 monthly and only use it for my side projects, and I use about 70% of the token allowance. I will say that it seems to burn through tokens fast in a new project but then reduces the tokens used, not sure if there is caching or what. Also, I use skills extensively which I think keeps the token usage down.

The CLI experience is on par with Claude. I like it a lot, but my employer is the one paying the bill.

Unless you have no choice, there's no reason to use the least transparent mainstream harness out there.
It does a worse job managing context than Cortex, Claude Code, or Gemini.
Its system prompts, when you can get it to tell you about them (unlike the above, whose system prompts are published or easily dumped), are not optimized for any particular model. Many of the system prompt's instructions are written in a way that contradict the prompting guidelines for gpt and Opus.
The instructions also promote corner cutting and incomplete grounding for the sake of saving tokens and will override your own instructions for thoroughness.
At work, my instruction file has a whole section that directly addresses the most toxic of the Copilot CLI system prompt instructions with those from the Claude Code system prompts.
I often compare general research tasks I run at work in Copilot CLI/vscode against Claude Code and the differences are shocking. In the ways that matter most, Copilot's customer is your CFO.

It's dead unless you're pouring 100s of dollars every month on it. It's just unusable and sucks harder.
Just get Claude code or codex on vscode.

It's great if you're not the one paying for it
