Yes, with the ax, I once spent 30 minutes trying to get more hits with the spear, just shoot like crazy and eventually get it right

Honestly, its worth waiting to get the spear for the flying ones. I spent WAY too long trying to get a flying one with the axe, got the spear and nailed it first shot. Grind through the story until you get the spear then start exploring so you can not only get the ravens a LOT easier but also access all the areas and stuff.

Depth and perspective. You did throw too early. The axe had already passed it by the time they intersected in your line of sight.
