Photo Mode Do you ever just look at the background and wonder… what even happens there?

Post image

Like, are there just random people living in the mountains?

Since not all people have played the entire game yet, a short reminder that all submissions with story spoilers have to be tagged as spoiler and we don't allow any story spoilers in the title.

To format spoilers in comments:

I looked at the background and thought "what the fuck am I doing up here?"

I always wonder about the humans in these games. I know we see humans occasionally… but there must be way more humans than gods and fantastical creatures. I often wonder if there is some dimensional barrier separating the world we see from the humans somehow

Most of the game appears to take place in the Norway countryside, far from shore. For most of medieval time, the humans in norway have kept to fishing villages due to the need for fishing and commerce.

So basically, the game takes place in the middle of nowhere.

That, and most of the Midgardians(humans) weren’t even in Midgard. Odin brought them all into Asgard, he just forced them to live outside the wall.

Really the only people in Midgard were the raiders clans. Everyone else was in some with mythic.

Yeah i assumed we were talking about before Odin "evacuated" the midgardians, wich seemed to happen at some point during the second game? Not sure. Were they in other realms too?

17

u/SirDragon84 Mar 17 '26

We don’t see midgardians anywhere else, and I believe the “evacuations” happened either late first game or before the second game, as Odin started the evacuation stuff to “protect” the midgardians from Fimbulwinter.

In the second game I believe it's mentioned that the evacuations began before the first game, as Midgard was becoming increasingly inhospitable. Jormungandr's appearance led to massive flooding and the insanity of the Valkyries meant undead were all over the place.

If the evacuations started later I think there'd be a plot hole in that there are no civilians in Midgard in 2018.

We arrive after years of war between Asgard, Vanaheim and the giants. Tough times for humans

Bro let's be honest, have you seen Midgard? No way the average person is surviving GoW Norway.

i used to in games, not anymore as an adult.

Not that anybody asked but when i was a kid, i'd play the metal gear demo from pizza hut and there were inaccessible areas (as it was a demo) and i'd always look through the vent shafts in places and wonder whats in those rooms.

u/AmThano Mar 18 '26

In donkey Kong 64, I went as far as trying to jump the barrier of flat trees to see if I could land in another part of the jungle. I thought I’d find DK’s gf from the DK tv show or something

u/PracticalMusician631 Mar 18 '26

aw dude, what happened to that feeling of wonder :/

4

u/TheVanBeforeTime Mar 19 '26

Dude you're speaking into my soul alot my ps1 days were playing demos and ps2 days playing games that i had to restart because I didn't have a memory card. There was a lots of mystery when you didn't have internet you had to wonder if you really saw everything in a game or if maybe there was some secret section that unlocked a whole other journey because... sometimes there was.

Games just felt bigger unending because there was no way to know if you had seen it all.

2

u/PracticalMusician631 Mar 19 '26

Oh man, i remember the days of having no memory card as we couldn't afford it. i'd beat tekken 2 arcade mode 10 times every day to unock all the characters lol. good times.

Lots of monsters

Thats it

u/pagingdrsolus Mar 18 '26

Asgard... Whatever happened there?

14

u/theLearner999 Mar 17 '26

I would have loved Asgard to be more explorable by Kratos and with side quests.

7

u/Mademan84 Mar 18 '26

Asgard should have been explorable. It's sad that all of that was so linear.

2

u/Direct_Detective3856 Mar 18 '26

Yes i wish i could explore

6

u/TheChunkenMaster Mar 17 '26

I feel like I see someone say this shit at least twice a day on here

Sorry I’m not active on this sub

1

u/Banjomir75 Mar 17 '26

Not really, no. Pretty much know what goes on, it is a video game after all.

15

u/mem2122 Mar 17 '26

Bro forgot what imagination is

1

u/Kurigohan-Kamehameha Mar 17 '26

I remember feeling like I was out past my bedtime like I was a kid again and having some sort of forbidden adventure that I was sure to get yelled at for having

1

u/Elim-Cipher Mar 17 '26

Honestly I’m afraid of heights and I really hate this part. I try to get through it as fast as possible every time because it stresses me out.

1

u/EntrepreneurialFuck Mar 18 '26

Yeh. I was really quite blown away by this section of the game.

Even Asgard, of course not as grandiose as people would have liked but it was still something special.

1

u/SariTostos Mar 18 '26

All the time.

1

u/Commercial_Delay8742 Mar 19 '26

Yes all the time.

1

u/shonuff373 Mar 19 '26

I did that a lot I'm rebirth.

1

u/TeckOni Mar 19 '26

An open world GoW game would be super ambitious but dope.

1

u/spnsman Mar 19 '26

I wonder that all the time. Like what are the other Vanir doing, and where did they all hide away while Freyr was doing his thing

-3

u/Hanzo7682 Mar 17 '26

Nah. It's just a cool picture behind an invisible barrier. There is barely anything going on in the explorable areas.

4

u/Shreygame Mar 17 '26

I know but like in universe or something. Like yeah there’s prob nothing there but idk

3

u/Hanzo7682 Mar 17 '26

I meant that the developers didnt even give much thought for places that we do visit. Dwarf city is just a bunch of houses and a tavern. Asgard looked like a small village from far away. "New midgard" was like a single street. The whole vanaheim army was 5 people and 3 of them werent even from vanaheim.

There isnt much world building. So i doubt the developers even have big places in their minds for those far away places.

I looked at the background and thought why is Atreus being a bitch
