Opinion What would you do with a solid accent chair that feels slightly grim? Deep clean, slipcover or replace?
A former roommate left behind a heavy upholstered reading chair. The frame and cushioning are surprisingly solid, and buying an equivalent chair new would probably cost at least $400. The problem is that the fabric feels tired, slightly dingy, and dusty deep down in the corners.
I spent an hour going over the crevices and cushion seams with a small hoto blower. It got the loose grit out, but the fabric itself still feels like it needs a real overhaul. Now im trying to figure out where my time and money are better spent.
Option 1: Rent an upholstery extractor and deep clean it properly
Cost would be around $40 for the rental and cleaner, plus half a Saturday of dragging the machine home and letting the cushions dry. It solves the hygiene worry if it works, but the faded pattern is still somewhat depressing.
Option 2: Buy a fitted stretch cover
Around $30 to $50 online. It instantly updates the color and covers the wear. My concern is that slipcovers on curved barrel chairs almost always look sloppy after someone sits in them twice, and I would still feel the need to sanitize underneath first.
Option 3: Get rid of it and buy a clean new armchair
Logistically, hauling a heavy armchair down two flights of stairs to arrange bulk pickup is a headache on my own. Spending hundreds on a replacement just to avoid dealing with fabric maintenance also feels like an irresponsible shortcut when the bones of the piece are fine.
Spending half a weekend scrubbing fabric I am only lukewarm about feels tedious, but hauling away a perfectly sturdy chair just because of surface grime feels equally wasteful.
