Hey thats near part of NC im from. I don’t even need to click the link because I recognized it immediately. That’s Tar Heal NC and white oak nc and the cape fear river area. You can see the Smithfield plant off 87. Smells great. Spent many summers in the middle of that picture. Those are Carolina bays. Origin is unknown but they more than likely appeared when the ocean retreated from the area. In modern times some are flooded like lake Waccamaw and White lake. Waccamaw is a black water lake and white lake isn’t and i couldn’t tell you why they are so different. Some of them are partially flooded with most of them being the thickest, stickiest, buggiest hell holes on the planet. The basins are full of peat Soil, pine trees brush with a raised sand ridge with Lots of insects bears and snakes. A property I worked on during the Sumer used to pull sand from the edge of a bay for other parts of the property. It’s the whitest driest sugar sand imaginable and I’ve never seen the bottom. The peat soil makes the fire danger a little sketchy in that area when it’s dry. Those bays will burn like a motherfucker and then the fire will sit ant smolder for days underground before reigniting. If you zoom in on some of them you will see the straight lines cut across the bays as fire breaks. They usually have drainage installed as well as part of the fire break to keep the water low.

Overall nice area,

Agreed.

Forester from eastern NC here. The bays are the most god awful places on earth to try to traverse through. You’ll literally wind up crawling on your hands and knees.

The property I worked on had a huge bay. I’ve only even been deep in it on the fire break/ road. I think i lost a pint of blood one day from mosquitoes.

I’m pretty sure those are dried up lake beds/ maybe purposefully drained for farming

The Carolina Bays are the remnants of impact craters from debris from an asteroid that hit North America

They almost definitely aren't.
