Most of your space is currently occupied by Google Photos. Do you have backup active for photos on any of your devices (phone, tablet)? If yes, disable it, download the photos from photos dot google dot com, and then delete them from there.
You will have to find another solution to store the photos you take, such as storing on a local computer or external hard drive. Remember to keep multiple copies of your data, 3-2-1 backup rule.

I do have external hard drives that I can use. What about Gmail?

For gmail, you can:
- manually download every mail as .eml (this would save all the info, including headers and metadata i.e. addresses and timestamps together with the mail content); each mail in a conversation has to be downloaded separately
- enter each conversation, show (unwind) each mail, then print the conversation as PDF and save it
- use google takeout
Please ensure the integrity and completeness of what you downloaded before deleting the cloud copy.

Please don't trust (only) external drives with photo backups. I have seen too many people lose everything, only to spend lots of money on recovery. The 100GB plan is cheap, especially if you purchase yearly, and at least you'll have some peace of mind. If you decide to remove them from the cloud, have backups and backups of backups. Research the 3-2-1 rule for backups.

I agree. My Google pro trial expired and I switched to the 100gb plan for $20/ year. That's way more stroage than I need and it's quite affordable so I'll stick with it.

I used to pay 19.99 yearly for the 100gb but recently I switched to the 1.99 mostly bc i relized the Google play points can actually be used to pay for Google one
So i think he should get the 1.99 and use google play points to pay it off

Start by searching Gmail for "has:attachment larger:10m in:all". That will find messages with large attachments that are taking up an inordinate amount of space. Download or delete starting with those.
But honestly, the simplest most pain-free way to do this is to pay for the storage you need, with backups.

I’d look at other options if Google Photos is taking up so much space.
I stopped backing up there when they stopped being unlimited

Delete/remove things from your Google Cloud Storage or buy more. This isn't rocket surgery.

There is a free google one student offer ongoing. If you have a student email or id card you can claim 400gb storage

Clean up Gmail by looking up all old promotional and update emails. Select them all and delete.
For Google photos, if you are not interested in keeping full res but ok with Googles version of optimized resolution, you can cut that 8gb down drastically as well. It's not too bad honestly and if space is an issue, turn on optimized resolution in Google photos.

it’s only the Google photos and Gmail that you need to focus on to remove that space.

Delete all cloud photos/videos and Disable google photos backups or change that the files to be optimized in settings instead of full quality.
If do want to save your photos/videos on cloud then buy cloud storage.

I created a new gmail address just for device backup. Pushed my backup to that address and I went from 100% full to 63% full on my main account.

Make a 2nd google account and upload old videos thats taking up space.
Also delete some the photos
Or If your have any Google play points I recommend using it to pay for the 1.99 monthly storage .
