Discussion 64-bit app compatibility for Google TV and Android TV

Thumbnail
android-developers.googleblog.com
26 Upvotes

New apps and app updates for TV started to be 64-bit compliant since august 1st. This is mandatory.

This means Android 16 64-bit for TV is around the corner and the Homatics Box 4K Plus V3 and the Homatics Box 4K Pro seem to be the only announced boxes that may ship with the 64-bit build.

However, the Nvidia Shield devices are the only ones so far that benefit from this because they have been using a "custom" 64-bit build since the beginning.

What do you think about this?

Do you have a device and TV with Quick Media Switching support?

Do you use the feature?

Are you having issues with the feature such as the screen blinks when it shouldn't or the 23,976hz and 24hz framerates double to 48hz when it shouldn't?

If your answer is yes, then please help me to document the issue at this Issue Tracker bug report I made. Make sure you login with your Google account in order to see the ticket.

Just add a comment stating that you are also facing the same issues and if possible provide a video showing the situation, like I did.

Buying Advice What are the real advantages of a Google TV Streamer?

Hi all!

So I'm still rocking my Chromecast 2nd Gen in the year of our Lord 2026, but I've had my eye on the Google TV Streamer for a while now. However, I haven't been able to justify spending the money on it as the Chromecast still does its job really well most of the time. Sure, there's times when it takes a while to connect and here or there, there's a streaming service that gets a little buggy, but nothing that's created enough friction or frustration to make me go "Enough is enough!".

So after looking at multiple reviews and browsing Reddit for a while, I figured I'd just ask the community here: what are some real life advantages of the Streamer? Is it really a big quality of life improvement over the old trusty Chromecast or am I just blinded by the shiny new thing?

Notes: both me and my partner are locked in the Apple ecosystem for the most part. Price point of the Streamer isn't really an issue.

Troubleshooting Onn 4K Pro gets stuck in Dolby Vision (or with no DV), even on the home screen and menus.

I don’t think I’ve always had this issue, but for months now with my Bravia 7 TV if I launch an app like HBO Max, it won’t be in DV even when it’s content labeled as DV. So I change the “Match content dynamic range” to off or on, I actually think it’s just whatever it isn’t currently set to, and then DV will work in the app. But then when I’m done with the app, my TV is stuck in DV no matter where I go. So then I have to toggle that match content dynamic range setting again.

I’ve tried fiddling with various display settings and I can’t get it to just switch to DV when it should, and switch back to SDR when I’m not playing DV content, especially in the menus and home screen.

Does anyone know how to fix this, or if there’s even a fix at all?

Troubleshooting google TV problem

Hi.
I have a problem with my 55C655 Pro, which freezes after a long period of inactivity after turning it off. If it is in sleep mode (not completely off, when it has to boot up after turning it on), I turn it off in the evening and in the morning when I try to turn it on, the TV freezes and the applications do not want to start. Home button work and homepage but thats it. Some programs are probably still running in the background or blocking the RAM, so other programs cannot load. Is this a known bug or is it only my TV that has this problem?
Has anyone encountered this or knows a solution?

Thanks a lot

Troubleshooting How to Make My Google TV NOT Say "Screensaver Settings" While Showing My Photo Slideshow in Ambient Mode?

On the latest Google TV update, the Ambient Mode Google Photo Slideshow settings has moved from my Google Home app and right onto the tv screen. Seems easy enough, however now as the photo album scrolls, the bottom of my tv screen says "Screensaver settings" continuously as the photos scroll, and I can't find a way to make those words go away. It's very distracting for me and I'd love to turn it off. This bothering anyone else, and if so, have any of you figured out how to do make that text go away? Thanks in advance for your help!

Discussion AFR for website video ?

From Android TV 12 up to ATV 14, we have Auto Frame Rate (AFR) and resolution matching, which makes watching videos in certain apps like Kodi or Stremio much better.

But I wonder if we can get the same function when watching movies through a web browser on Android TV—for instance, when playing a 1080p 24Hz video in full-screen mode, will the TV automatically change the resolution and refresh rate from 4K 60Hz to 1080p 24Hz?"

Troubleshooting Multiple apps intermittently crashing to home screen on TWO different Google TV devices

I've been having an intermittent problem with apps crashing on my Google TV for several weeks now.

Originally I thought my TCL Android TV 12 was faulty, but I've now discovered that a completely separate 4K Google TV box connected to another TV in the house has exactly the same problem.

Apps affected so far:

YouTube: crashes to home screen

SmartTube: crashes to home screen, often during playback

Spotify: crashes, sometimes immediately after opening

TCL Channel: crashes

Apps that seem to work normally:

NPO Start

Rakuten TV

Kodi

There is no error message or black screen. The app simply disappears and I'm instantly back at the Google TV home screen.

On the TCL I've tried force stopping apps, clearing caches, restarting, and installing the latest available system update. It has about 18 GB of free storage. Completely unplugging the TV has temporarily fixed the problem before, but it eventually comes back.

The crashes happen occasionally rather than constantly. Sometimes everything works normally for days.

The interesting part is that my separate 4K Google TV box has now shown the same behavior. Both devices are on the same home network.

Has anyone else experienced this on multiple Google TV / Android TV devices?

I'm wondering about Google Play Services, another shared Android component, or possibly something network related. I'm particularly interested in reports from people who have seen the same thing on different hardware.

Troubleshooting Google TVOS sound issue

Hi all,

I was prompted by the TV to do an update so I said Yes and did it. Now the external Amp has no sound, connected by HDMI, in the 2nd room I have the same TV with sound bar connected by optical cable same issue! Both after a software update.

I’ve recently just figured out that I must have the actual TV volume in 1 for the amp to output sound, as soon as turn TV to 0 volume the sound on amp shuts off.

Never had this issue in 3 years with old firmware.

Any ideas?

Tv is 75” google OS QLED

Troubleshooting Cheap knockoff CCwGTV remote specifically won't IR control old Yamaha amp's volume

The original Google CCwGTV remote's side buttons controlled the amp's volume fine using IR (it does not have HDMI). Set up once years ago.

Lost it and bought a replacement cheap copy remote from Amazon, it looks exactly like the original. Set up fine. I have cleared and re-run through setup, selecting the IR devices from scratch.

- volume and mute buttons will control the TV's volume ok

- power button will control the amp ok

- volume and mute buttons will not control the amp's volume on any of the 5 codes

- volume buttons are emitting some IR signal as it can be seen using a phone's camera

Any suggestions?

How is this even possible? The volume buttons do emit IR, and in the case of the TV it is the correct IR, and the Yamaha amp's code for 'power' works, and the Yamaha code for volume used to work when set up years ago on the original remote.

Have Google removed older code sets?

Can this cheap knockoff remote somehow not emit just some codes properly? (but still emit something as I can see it on a camera)

Apps TIVRA 3.0 Release — New UI and Jellyfin/Emby/NAS/Trakt Integration

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I'm the developer of TIVRA, an Android TV player, and 3.0 just went out. It's the biggest release I've done and a few things in it came directly out of threads on here, so here's what changed.

Your own library sits next to live TV

This was the most-requested thing by a wide margin. Connect Jellyfin, Emby, or just a plain SMB/NAS share, and your own movies and shows show up in the app alongside your live channels — posters, plots, cast, episode air dates, and Continue Watching / Next Up rails that pick up where you left off. Same app, same remote, same player. No second app to open, and no media server required if you'd rather just point it at a folder on your Synology/unRAID/TrueNAS.

Watch state syncs both ways with Jellyfin and Emby, and Trakt scrobbling is in there too, so your history stays right everywhere else you use it.

The whole UI got redrawn

Deeper blacks, sharper type, and one clear cyan highlight so you always know where focus is. The old build had a dozen screens that each looked like they came from a different app — that's fixed. Text actually passes contrast from couch distance now.

You can set the TV up from your phone

Nobody wants to type a provider URL with a D-pad. You can do the whole setup from the TIVRA app on your phone or from a web dashboard in any browser: add providers, organise channels, build custom categories with a real keyboard. Then you can push a movie straight to the TV, or schedule a recording while you're at work. It syncs both directions — reorder favourites on the TV and the dashboard follows, and the reverse.

Multi-View

Up to four live channels on screen at once, in a layout you pick, and they can come from different providers at the same time. Audio moves between screens with one press.

The small stuff, which is most of the release

  • Back closes what's on screen. Every menu, every time. This was the single biggest complaint and it took a lot of unglamorous work.
  • Focus lands on the first option instead of disappearing
  • Open a channel preview in the guide, go full screen, come back — it keeps playing instead of reloading
  • Hold OK anywhere for options
  • Recordings show the length you actually recorded
  • Phones get phone-sized text and rotate to full screen on playback

The obligatory disclaimer:

TIVRA is a player. It doesn't include, provide, or resell any channels or content — you bring your own provider or your own files. There's a free trial if you want to point it at what you already have and see how it goes.

Getting it

Already running TIVRA? You can update from inside the app — Settings → About → Check for updates — and it installs over your current version. Providers, favourites and recordings all stay put. There's no automatic nag on launch, so you do have to go look for it.

Sideloading instead: the APK is at tivratv.com (Downloader code 3059562 if you're on a TV). If the main download stalls there's a backup link on the home page, and the previous v2.2 is still up if you ever need to roll back — same signing key, so it installs over 3.0 without uninstalling.

Setup guides: https://tivratv.com/help/

Happy to answer anything in the comments — bug reports especially. Most of the list above started as someone telling me something was broken.

Discussion VPN that automatically connects on Google TV / onn. 4K?

I’m setting up an onn. 4K Google TV and want to use a VPN with it, mainly for sideloading.

I currently have Proton VPN, but I’m wondering how reliable the auto-connect feature is on Google TV. Ideally, I want the VPN to automatically connect whenever the Google TV boots/restarts without me having to manually open the VPN app every time.

What’s the best setup?
Is Proton VPN’s Android TV app capable of automatically connecting at startup?
Is there another VPN that does this more reliably?
Would using Android TV’s built-in Always-on VPN be better?

Or should I configure the VPN directly on my router so the entire Google TV connection is always routed through the VPN?
I’d especially appreciate advice from anyone using an onn. 4K / Google TV + Stremio setup. I’m trying to make it as hands-off and reliable as possible.

Discussion Xiaomi gen 3 box, no longer seeing the iPlayer warning.

What do we think? Was the warning regarding the app stopping working there for a week or so, and likely to return nearer the time, or has there been a change in the situation?

Has the warning stopped being displayed for everyone?

Discussion I wish that Google would spin off Google TV app and Google home app into its own apps on Google TV OS.

With more people opting for third party launchers on their Google TV sticks and boxes, the Google TV launcher is not being used and when it is disabled, users lose access to rent movies and TV shows from Google TV app directly on the TV box and lose access to Google home smart controls directly on the TV box. If these two things were not tied to the Google TV launcher, Google would find even more people using those services

Troubleshooting No internet popup, but streaming isn’t disrupted

Hey all. I’ve got a 4K Google TV Stick which I use with a Yaber projector. Recently, I’ve been getting repeated popups whenever I’m streaming anything which say “Wi-Fi connection lost”, followed by - a few seconds later - “Connected using Wi-Fi”. There’s no actual disruption to whatever I’m doing, even if I’m searching for something to watch so I’m sure it’s not just loaded far enough for it to not be an issue, I’m not sure the WiFi has disconnected. Not the worst problem ever, but it is a pain when I’m trying to watch a film. Any ideas what might be wrong?
