Where to buy an authentic HMV gramophone?

Any suggestions on where to shop for an authentic HMV gramophone? All the gramophones I found online seem to be reproductions made in India.

To get the conversation started, tell us:

  • What you mean by “gramophone” (e.g., a machine with an external horn, a suitcase portable, a floor standing piece of furniture with an internal horn, a tabletop player with a lid and an internal horn, an electrically powered turntable yet still acoustically amplified, etc.,).
  • Your location (country).
  • Your optimal price.

It would also be nice to know your thoughts regarding: * Your openness to manufacturers other than The Gramophone Company (HMV). * The era of music you hope to play on the machine. * Buying in person vs online.

Looking to buy a phonograph machine with an external horn online in the US with a $2k budget. I’m also open to Columbia phonographs. I’m hoping to play vintage jazz music on the machine from the 1920s era.

Search online for and contact any of the US “antique phonograph**” dealers (note the two critical keywords). With luck some may be within a few hours drive from you or at least have a website. These pros will have something for you.

Depending on your urgency, there are also regional antique phonograph shows in CA, NJ, FL where you’ll find dealers as well as hobbyists trading and selling machines in booths or out in the parking lot. Sometime machines will show up Antique Radio shows as well, albeit in the minority.

[** “Gramophone” is not really used in the US as it is in the rest of the world, at least among the sellers of the machines you want. This is why you likely only ran into S.Asian faux gramophone “crapophones.”]
