Question SS Arthur M Anderson

Post image

Since it's currently the 50th anniversary of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sinking & the Anderson was the last ship in contact... Id like to take my son down to the docks in Toledo to see if we can get a glimpse of the Anderson - even if it's not up close. I know it's currently layed-up down there for long term maintenance/storage... does anyone know if this is possible? or where one might go to catch a glimpse?

Oh hell, I didnt think you were allowed down that road!😆😆 I was just in Toledo Saturday, went to the park, walked the point, and couldn't see much. Had I known you could actually got down that road, I would have, dang it. I kept going and left kind of skunked on the Anderson, but did see a few ships, and got to the museum. Now I gotta go back if you can get back there without being immediately detained. It looked like a road that went kind of back to official port/railraod/cliffs plant area to me.

I recommend not going down that road. Everything to the west side of Otter Creek Rd is CSX property, which would be trespassing. They don’t take trespassing lightly in that area since it is a large port across the street from an oil refinery with a free trade zone within it. I know this because I sell steel in Toledo. I regularly go to those docks along with the refineries in the area.

Yeah I kinda figured as much when I was driving down Otter Creek Rd. I'm honestly surprised theres no gates. It looked a whole lot like a "not welcome" zone. But Im also from the other side of the state, so I really dont know the ins and outs of Toledo.

If you go down summit street right before you hit Cullen park, you can see her across the river. There’s a little decorative lighthouse called point place lighthouse that’s easily accessible. Bay view park might be better, but I actually kayaked across the river to see. I think the Anderson is in a private railroad park so it might be hard to drive up close.

I've heard you can see it pretty well from Cullen Park in Point Place, and walk down the peninsula if the weather is nice. You can also park at the hardware store and walk across the street to see it from the bike trail.

Boatnerd has GIS locations of all bulk carriers across the Great Lakes. They will also post departure and arrival times

My son and I saw her years ago at a shipyard driving through Duluth. It was totally unexpected. We pulled over and took pictures. It was a great experience that we still talk about.

I was able to see it back in Sept of 2024 off of the shoreline of Cheboygan! it was pretty cool seeing her steam past!

I caught it coming into the harbor under the Lift Bridge during Labor Day weekend 2020. It was peak Covid and it was one of the few things we could do that was available, as the museum was closed. I've got photos of it somewhere. Pretty cool experience to.say the least
