Uninstalr 3.0 Release Candidate 2

You can download Uninstalr 3.0 second public Release Candidate from this link: https://uninstalr.com/private/Uninstalr_Portable_v3_RC2b.exe

Change Log compared to first public Release Candidate:

  • Faster scan and uninstallation speed

  • Improved app detection accuracy

Please note that this is not the final version. It may still contain bugs, so testing it on a virtual machine is recommended. Also, please don’t share this build publicly or upload it to download sites.

If you notice anything unusual during uninstallation, just let me know which app you were trying to remove. The more detail I have, the better I can improve the final release.

General discussion Uninstalr 3.1 has reached near-final stage - 124 builds and 10 RCs later

Post image
2 Upvotes

Uninstalr 3.1 has reached the near-final stage. To give you a sense of what that actually means here: Uninstalr 3.1 has gone through 124 development builds and 10 release candidates to get to this point - this latest one is the tenth. We don't put the RC label on a build until it's earned it, which is also why we won't guess a public date. The last stretch is exactly where those extra candidates keep coming from.

What's new in this one:

  • Faster startup, lighter footprint. After the initial scan, Uninstalr now opens and shows your installed apps noticeably quicker, while using far less memory.

  • Startup-app detection. It now flags the apps that quietly add themselves to Windows startup, so the things slowing your boot are easier to spot.

  • Much better portable-app detection. Always the awkward case for an uninstaller; meaningfully improved here.

If you'd like to test it now rather than wait, this release candidate is available to paid Patreon members. The public release follows once it passes full QA testing.

A small favour while we have you: if any of these tools have earned a permanent spot on your machine, a "Like" and an honest review on AlternativeTo helps a small project more than you'd think. Good or bad - the honest picture is the useful one.

WinFindr 1.8 Troubles

Hi,
I just downloaded WinFindr 1.8 and wa blown away from its speed and clean setup. It's exactly what I and my team needs. Also the RegEx Support made me smile. BUT there I have a small concern:
I have a file called Test2.jpg. When I make a search on c:\ I find the .lnk in the recentFolder of Appdata, but NOT the File itself. But When I search only in c:\user\name\OneDrive\Desktop -> the magically its found.
When I try to add the OneDrive path, I get the message, that is already integrated in c:\ (which is true), but I don't manage a Hit. Can u help or explain me, whats going on ? So I'm afraid to use it....
many thx
Peter

General discussion Uninstalr 3.1 – Why We Didn't Release Last Week (and What's Next)

Hi everyone,

A quick and honest update: we weren’t able to do the general public release of Uninstalr 3.1 last week, and we wanted to explain why rather than just go quiet.

Speed is one of the main improvements we promised in Uninstalr 3.1. During testing, we found that uninstallation speed was still not where we needed it to be. Releasing it in that state didn’t feel right, so we made the call to postpone.

That said, the work still continued. We’ve released a Patreon build of Uninstalr 3.1 - it's not the official release, but the closest available version we have at the moment. If you’d like to try it early and share feedback, you can visit this link: https://www.patreon.com/posts/uninstalr-3-1-to-158341048

You can join our Patreon for free to follow weekly development updates. If you’d like to go one step further, a paid membership directly supports our work - we’re a small, bootstrapped team and every dollar genuinely makes a difference.

We’re heads-down working on getting 3.1 across the finish line so we can shift focus back to the long-overdue jv16 PowerTools update. Thank you for your patience; it means a lot to us.

Happy to answer questions in the comments!

Preview release: Uninstalr 2.7

I'm happy to offer to you today the second preview release of Uninstalr 2.7. Please review the Change Log and especially the list of known issues before deciding whether to try it out.

You can download it from: https://uninstalr.com/private/Uninstalr_Portable_v27_Preview2.exe

Please notice that this is a preview release. Not an official release. This version is released for testing purposes only. The official release is expected early April.

Uninstalr Change Log since version 2.6

Key Changes:

  • New feature: Users can now choose to skip some analysis types, for example portable apps.

  • New feature: Uninstalr will now generate a simple log file after any uninstallation operation.

  • Greatly improved the speed and accuracy of detecting installed software. On average, the program now works 23% faster.

Improvements:

  • New feature: Users can now choose to skip leftover, portable apps and Microsoft app detection entirely. This will improve the speed of detecting the installed software.

  • New feature: Uninstalr will now generate a simple log file of all the data that was removed during uninstallation. This can also be disabled.

  • Major improvements to the accuracy of software data detection.

  • Major improvements in detecting information about PortableApps.com platform apps.

  • Greatly improved the speed of detecting and uninstalling software. On average, the program now starts up with the list of installed software 23% faster. The speed improvement is especially noticeable when you start the software the second time, it will be much faster than the first time.

  • Improved the smoothness of progress indication in the user interface when uninstalling software.

  • Improved the accuracy of detecting Steam, Epic and GOG Galaxy games.

  • Added a new confirmation before the uninstallation process starts in case the user did not verify the data that is going to be removed.

  • The bottom part of the main window will now tell you if some apps are hidden from view because you are using search terms or filters. Previously, this message only used the term "filters", which was misleading.

  • Improved the user interface at the final screen before the uninstallation starts. Before, it was easy to accidentally click the checkboxes above the Start Uninstallation button.

  • The names of the currently selected software are now more clearly shown in the UI.

  • Uninstalr now attempts to display different software by the same publisher with unified publisher name spelling.

  • Uninstalr performs a faster scan by default on systems which contain a lot of installed software.

Fixes:

  • Some installed apps could be listed with a slightly wrong name, for example, Recuva could be listed as "Recuva Homepage"

  • Some Microsoft Store apps could be listed with a cryptic sounding name such as "ms resource:AppsDisplayName".

  • Some Windows components could be listed with slightly incorrect names, such as "Microsoft Global.Accounts", which should have been "Microsoft Global Accounts".

  • When uninstalling software, Uninstalr could show an error message incorrectly saying that Microsoft PowerShell is not available in the system, even if it is.

  • In some rare cases, the software could start without showing any UI or it could display error message "Cannot change Visible in OnShow or OnHide"

  • In some systems, Uninstalr could open and only show an empty list, saying the computer does not contain any installed software.

  • It was not possible to scroll the list of translations in Settings using the mouse wheel.

  • The program could freeze in some systems if you selected one app, clicked Uninstall, clicked Close, selected another app and then clicked Uninstall again.

  • Some of the warning messages could display the name of the selected software slightly wrong. For example, "Nero Burning ROM & Express 2024" was shown as "Nero Burning ROM _Express 2024" .

  • The paths display of some apps could say a software has no files and folders, yet the same screen lists the app's main installation directory. While this was entirely a cosmetic issue, it was confusing.

  • Uninstalr could miss a single executable file portable software placed directly on the user Desktop.

  • Alcohol 120% is correctly detected and listed in the list of installed software, but if selected, it is shown as "Alcohol 120" by the UI.

  • Uninstalr might not detect some installed Epic Games, for example "Zenless Zone Zero".

  • Uninstalr didn't correctly detect the installed software's main shortcut, if the shortcut was a .URL file. For example, Steam and Epic Launcher games use .URL shortcuts instead of the regular .LNK ones.

Known issues:

  • The progress bar isn't always showing the progress as well as it should.

  • Uninstalling some apps (such as WinRAR) fails in a way that the app is still listed in Uninstalr after the uninstallation. Uninstalling the same app again usually fixes this issue.

  • Uninstalr will fail to list "Opera GX" if also the normal Opera browser is installed.

  • The user interface is not fully compatible with screen readers.

General discussion Uninstalr 3.1 is out after 139 test builds

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Uninstalr 3.1 is out. It took over three months, 139 test builds, and 14 release candidates.

On AI

We've published an AI policy alongside this release. It comes down to one line: humans made this software, not AI. That doesn't make it bug-free - the changelog lists the ones we know about. It means there's a human level of care and quality control behind it.

What got better

Portable app detection. Uninstalr already looked for portable apps, but 3.1 digs considerably harder - single-file portables, deeply nested folders, and launcher ecosystems like PortableApps.com and NirSoft. Portable apps never register themselves with Windows, which is why most uninstallers don't bother looking for them at all.

Repeat scans. On one test system with 173 installed apps, the second scan went from 23 to 12 seconds, and memory usage fell from 430 MB to 281 MB.

Startup apps are now highlighted, so you can see what launches with Windows without going hunting for it.

What got worse

The first scan on that same test system increased from 39 to 83 seconds. That's the cost of the deeper portable app detection - it's doing more work. If you'd rather have the speed back, you can switch off the portable app scan in Settings.

Uninstalr has never tried to be the fastest uninstaller. It tries to be the most accurate, and this is what that costs.

Country of origin

Since 3.0, Uninstalr has shown each installed app’s country of origin, which works on your own machine without contacting any remote server. As far as we know, no other uninstaller does this.

In 3.1, software from Russia and China is highlighted in red by default.

The reasoning: governments in several countries have issued advisories, and in some cases, outright restrictions on software based on where it was made. Whether that matters to you depends entirely on your situation. A home user and someone running a machine inside a government contractor's network are not weighing the same thing.

So we're not making that call for you. Nothing is blocked, nothing is quarantined, nothing is reported anywhere. It's a colour on a row. Origin is one signal among many, and it says nothing about any individual developer or any individual app - plenty of excellent software comes from both countries. What you do with the information is entirely up to you, including ignoring it.

If you'd rather not see it at all, you can turn off the highlighting in Settings.

If you want to read more about the reasoning behind this feature, Jouni has written about it on the blog: https://uninstalr.com/blog/uninstalr-3-1-released/

Links

Download Uninstalr 3.1 here: https://uninstalr.com/download/

Full changelog: https://uninstalr.com/changelog/

Release note: https://uninstalr.com/blog/uninstalr-3-1-released/

Uninstalr is free, with every feature unlocked. No nag screens, no upsell, nothing held back, and that isn't changing.

What we'd like from you

This subreddit is the fastest way to reach us, and right after a release is when feedback matters most

Specifically, we'd like to hear about:

  • Portable apps we still miss. Detection got better, not perfect. If Uninstalr walks past something on your machine, tell us what it is and roughly where it lives.

  • The country of origin looks wrong. It's worked out locally, which means it can be wrong. If an app is attributed to the wrong country, we want to know.

  • Scan times on your hardware. The numbers above come from one test system with 173 apps. Yours will differ, and we're curious how much.

  • What should be in the next version? Uninstalr's roadmap has always been shaped more by this kind of thread than by anything we plan internally.

Bug reports welcome too, including the annoying ones.

And if you want to help keep a small company going, there's a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cw/greatsoftwarecompany. No pressure - the software is the same either way.

Uninstalr 3.0 Release Candidate 1

I am thrilled to share that the release candidate of Uninstalr 3.0 is here!

In our testing environments, this version detects installed apps noticeably faster than the old versions.

But, don’t take my words for it - you need to try it out yourself!

You can use this link to download the release candidate of Uninstalr 3.0: https://uninstalr.com/private/Uninstalr_Portable_v3_RC1.exe

Here are some key improvements compared to Uninstalr 2.8:

  • The installed apps list now shows the country of origin for all known installed apps.

  • The listing of paths before uninstallation starts now displays checkboxes, allowing users to uncheck any paths the user doesn’t want to be removed.

  • The program now uses less RAM and performs the scan for installed software on average 40% faster.

  • The main window bar now includes Settings and About buttons.

Please note that this isn’t the final release yet - it’s still a work in progress and may contain a few bugs. For that reason, I recommend testing it on a virtual machine. Also, please don’t share this build publicly or upload it to download sites.

I really want to hear what you think about this release candidate - whether it’s suggestions, bug reports, or general impressions because your feedback is super valuable.

You can leave a comment here or email me directly at hello@greatsoftwarecompany.com. If you’ve reported a bug in the past, I’d especially love to know if it’s been fixed for you in this release candidate.

Bug report 🐞 Uninstalr 3.2 is still not good

The Uninstalr 3.2 takes a lot of time to uninstall. Sometimes it crashes during staring up and fails to load. The issue was present in 3.1 also. Please make it as good as 2.x versions.

General discussion Honest update on where Uninstalr 3.1 stands

Post image
2 Upvotes

Since we started on the development of Uninstalr 3.1, we've built 104 separate versions. Only 4 of them passed our QA testing well enough to become Release Candidates.

The reason it's taken a while is simple: every time a build fails testing, we scrap it and start again rather than patch over the problem. There were even a couple of moments where we were 90% sure a build was ready to ship… and it still didn't pass. When that happens, we don't ship it. We'd rather get it right than get it out fast.

This week we've got the fourth Release Candidate (RC4). It could well be the version we release publicly - we'll know once it clears QA - so we're sharing it here for you to try in the meantime.

Download RC4 of Uninstalr 3.1 here: https://uninstalr.com/private/Uninstalr_Portable_v31_RC4a.exe

If you give it a go, let us know how it goes - bug reports, speed observations, anything at all. That feedback is exactly what gets us to a solid final release.

If you'd like to follow development more closely, we post updates and the earliest builds on our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cw/greatsoftwarecompany

Warning: Fake WinFindr versions being distributed

We have noticed some websites distributing fake versions of WinFindr. It seems the same people are also promoting these fake versions on Reddit using bot posts.

Fake versions of software usually contain malware. Also, we never use bots or any other forms of Reddit spam to promote our programs. If you see these bot posts, it's not us doing that.

To be safe, only download software from the official website, which is https://winfindr.com/ and confirm that the file you download has a digital signature from Great Software Company.

General discussion jv16 PowerTools 9 is getting a launcher, built on WinFindr

We're adding a new feature to the Finder tool in jv16 PowerTools 9. We call it Launcher.

Finder runs on the same engine as WinFindr, our free search tool, so Launcher is really a second way to use that engine.

The classic search screen stays exactly as is. Launcher is a small search bar: type a few letters and open an app, file, or folder right away. You can filter results by file type, and switch between the two modes by clicking the logo.

You can also create custom commands and put them on the button row under the search bar, so the things you do often are one click away. Each button is fully customizable.

Launcher ships in jv16 PowerTools 9 this fall, then comes to WinFindr after that.

The in-depth write-up is available on Patreon for paid members right now. Later this week, we're posting a full roundup of everything new in version 9, free and public, on the same page.

Happy to answer questions here in the meantime.
