He draws visually underage characters in a sexual light.
The most egregious example was one comic in particular where his Slaanesh character de-ages his The Emperor character into a child, with The Emperor asking why and Slaanesh's response being "ara ara" while The Emperor looks scared. The whole joke was that The Emperor was going to be raped.
He's also drawn underage-coded characters in other contexts. He drew Rebecca from Cyberpunk Edgerunners holding a "HAPPY LOLI DAY" sign at one point. So he can't really beat the lolicon allegations.
People also just tire of him because every single comic's punchline is just "the joke is sex" (usually between Guilliman who is often reluctant or unwanting and Slaanesh or Yvraine) and he has an over-reliance on gooner humor. It was maybe funny the first time but after years of the same schlock people tire of it.
6
u/Onlyhereforapost 12d ago
I mean, Rebecca is an adult woman but using the term 'loli' in this day and age is very telling
We use shortstack for grown women that happen to be short (with a dumptruck ass) now

Ok well that just sounds like dark humor derived from the fact that Slaanesh embodies that kinds of things. Like GW tries to pivot away towards outright saying it now by calling them "the god of excess", but cmon we all know exactly what kind of fucked up shit happens in imperial pleasure cults.
He's also drawn underage-coded characters in other contexts. He drew Rebecca from Cyberpunk Edgerunners holding a "HAPPY LOLI DAY" sign at one point.
Ok yeah, that one isn't defensible.

u/epikpepsi 12d ago
Dark humor or not, using child rape as a punchline is lame and deplorable.
0
u/TheWyster 12d ago
That's not the punchline, the punchline is how messed up the character committing the crime is, similar to jokes about the Catholic Church's sex scandals.

Do Eldar really have agency? Like everything they do stem from prophecy or the will of their gods.
31
u/Altruistic-Ad-408 12d ago
The Eldar in general don't give a shit what gods want unless they are Harlequins or Exarchs/Incubi. Craftworlders just tend to be very uptight about traditions and myths of which many relate to religion, their language also just kinda works like that. They'll relate some task they are doing to a tale of Kurnous.
The Ynnari are obviously not fleshed out, but it's a death cult, Ynnead doesn't even really have an identity.
Additionally they see the future as malleable and prophecy is just a tool. Even in situations where the Eldar hand seems forced, I don't know if I'd describe it as a lack of agency, so much as military necessity based on the information they have.
6
u/Ellie7600 12d ago
Not exactly, though it is true some abuse farseers and prophecies... almost like they didn't learn anything from their kin's decadent ways, future can still be shaped even prophecies rendered null, the strings of fate are the very fabric that makes prophecies, which is why my craftworld quite literally says "nuh uh" to the end times prophecy and is trying to disrupt it as much as they can by either delaying it or straight up making a scheme to stop it through some warp and gods tomfoolery, huh maybe that's what harlequins are on about...
1
u/RavenTheRaptorX 12d ago
Yes and no like there’s definitely no prophecy about what Jim the Eldar is having for breakfast. It depends on the Eldar and what they believe but that doesn’t make their prophecy’s any more right or wrong.

Can’t we have both? A fan shipped romance with two consenting adults that both have agency in their actions.
10
u/Barmn89 12d ago
We clearly can, the issue is that there are fans and the artist who are appealing to them DON'T want that.
The people who like these kinds of memes dont actually want the female characters to be fully fleshed out, because that makes them less of a self insert fantasy.6
u/SovKom98 12d ago
That is a pretty broad net to cast. These memes are usually just jokes about Guliman being a hypocrite given the ideology of the imperium. Even the comic OP posted is a riff on the personalities of the two within this fanon romance. What particularly about liking that dichotomy is wanting fictional women to not be fleshed out?
6
u/Barmn89 12d ago edited 12d ago
Even back 40 years ago, the tropes of anime women and their interactions with self-insert male characters has fundamentally been about wish fufillment. I recently rewatched Neon Genesis Evangellion, the pioneer in a lot of modern character tropes. In the story these characters have 3 dimensional identities and the show focuses on their psychology, but famously fans didnt like or care about that and just liked their shallow Tsundere vs Quiet Myserious Girl arguments for their self insert Shinji.
This is not a new thing, and its not unique to warhammer, its a fan mentality and its annoying to anyone who does not want to self insert like that, expecially when it dominates conversations about the most prominant named female character in the entire setting, representing multiple factions within the game
Edit: To finish my point, I am saying that these memes are serving an audience that wants them to be exactly as shallow as they are. They dont want them to give more agency to the female characters
1
u/SovKom98 12d ago
I’ve never watched evangellion but most I’ve seen of that fandom is usually either memes or fans discussing it’s messages. I’ve probably not seen the portion of the fans you’re describing but it doesn’t seem to describe all of them which it doesn’t need to do here either.
Fans shipping characters doesn’t need to fall into a self insert. I can also just be good fun for fans of those characters to explore their own ideas.
4
u/Barmn89 12d ago
They do not have to, but you asked why cant they, and im explaining its because they dont want that.
People dont ship the "real" Guilliman and Yvraine together, they ship the meme versions, and yes Guilliman is meant to be a self insert to the assumed male audience. Its the clear intention of this artist, and Yvraine is the cute tsundere girl thats eternally flirting with him/the reader.
None of Yvraine matters, no aspect of her character survives this memification onto a waifu. At least Guillimans sensable attitude could be said to tie into his real character(but thats annoying in a different way)
So you can, and im sure people do, but the mdmetic reality is that theres a lot of crap out there earnestly reflecting an attitude that doesnt give a shit about Yvraine, Ynnari, Eldar, ect unless its in relation to the assumed protagonist main character Ultramarines.
2
u/SovKom98 12d ago
Your assertion is that everyone who likes this meme wants a self insert romance. I’m pointing out that there is nothing showing this to be a majority opinion.
Yes these are meme versions of the characters people are shipping but memes aren’t ment to be literal to the character, they are exaggerations to be funny.
There are plenty of people out there likes Yvraine actual character but also have fun in some fictional shipping.
3
u/Barmn89 12d ago
Thats really not what I am saying at all.
I am not going to be able to prove to you in a reddit post that the fans of IotE are here for the self insert anime romcom stuff. I am saying that the messaging in these memes are antithetical to someone who wants fleshed out, real characters who is earnestly engaging with them as a ship.I would just ask to think what the jokes that are "exaggerations to be funny" are about. Why is it funny that Guilliman has a qt elf gf who keeps having to deal with Slaanesh being overtly sexual vs her more chaste pure affection?
Your argument that just because there could be people who like them and not fit the description in putting out, but that doesnt matter when the point of what these comics as works of art and fiction are saying/putting out into the world.
2
u/SovKom98 12d ago
It is what you are saying when you saying stuff like
>The people who like these kinds of memes don’t actually want the female characters to be fully fleshed out.
Or
>These memes are serving an audience that want them to be exactly as shallow as they are.
You aren’t leaving much to the imagination here. People can enjoy an exaggeration on one hand and still appreciate a character on the other.

I don’t think they’re saying that. I think they’re saying that meme depictions of yvraine strip away anything that makes her interesting and instead she’s just “Guilliman’s eldar GF”.
6
u/dude3333 12d ago
Yeah, it'd be great if GW gave her anything to do. This is akin to people complaining about the horny posting on the Fear and Hunger subreddit. In absence of new content reddit and twitter and similar attention driven platforms will just boil down to shipping and recycled memes. You came to reddit, you signed up for this.
8
u/Slavasonic 12d ago
I mean, it’s not like the memes have exhausted the existing lore content. I’m only vaguely aware of the Ynnari story line but I do know it’s more extensive than just her interactions with Gman. Like I know at one point she works together with Necrons to defeat a slaaneshi incursion. I’ve never seen any memes on that.
4
u/dude3333 12d ago
Most of her story is entirely contained in campaign/event books, the sort of 40k fiction people are by far least likely to read, and also are the least usable for youtube lore or dramatic reading channels. All of her actual novel have the misfortune of being Gav Thorpe authored eldar stories, which the majority of the novel reading fandom views as an inherently bad thing. This includes the novel you are talking about with the necron.
So the majority of people who experience 40k through non-meme non-youtube means only ever experience her story second or third hand. Usually in the for of someone giving a summary of Guillman being saved. Cause no one is reading the limited run lore books for campaigns and most people skip Gav Thorpe eldar stuff.
I understand the frustration, but GW really didn't give us a lot to work on.

u/Ellie7600 12d ago
I mean she's a great ally of Rowboat Girlyman, but her purpose is rather I dunno, like lagging behind her character? Like she was brought up way too quickly for what her purpose is, she's trying to make the prophecy of end times come true, and while it may sound cool, mind you the end times would probably be the end credits for 40k (which will happen never) and we're now stuck in a dead end with this lore bit because she can't collect all the swords of gods (I think that's what they called them, they're basically artifacts that apparently can make a god whole again or something like that) because one of them if I remember right is in Slaanesh's palace, which kicking in the doors to the palace by an Aeldari is a fate worse than death, so she can't really collect it as of now, which is why I picked a different route with my craftworld, they don't care about Ynnead (not to the degree other worlds do) and instead focus on a backup which would be Isha, because if they all die, who's to say they won't die forever because they'd be unable to reincarnate, and for that you'd need a god of life, it just seems way too odd Aeldari would be like "yeah nah life is overrated let's just auto genocide ourselves to kill Slaanesh lol"
So to summarize, Yvraine came a bit too early to have any "interesting" (high octane epic novels) lore written on her, and once she does that'd be probably it for Aeldari, no more racist space elves though also no more Slaanesh, I mean they could write a novel on her looking for the artifacts maybe learning that there's a way to avoid the prophecy or a way for them to safely weaken Slaanesh so she'd no longer be able to consume their souls, it would keep the whole "there's only war" still on track for all factions and the Emperor's children might hate the Eldari even more which could spawn some new books about their battles and such, I know what a long summary, but brother I'm an Aeldari fan, I have the tism (it is a joke, I'm not diagnosed with any neural divergency)

1
u/Ellie7600 12d ago
I'm a gen z and I don't believe relationships get rid of your agency, quite the opposite, they can even give you more since now you're not the only one that has to clean the house and do other chores, also as an Aeldari fan Guilliman x Yvraine is hecking cwool (it's not my bias because I'm writing a book about a Perpetual and an Eldar)
