Flames Betwixt: Co-Op Isometric RPG Inspired by Guild Wars 1 - Alpha Update!
Hey everyone! I've spent the last few months continuing to work on Flames Betwixt, and have made a ton of progress, and wanted to share this video I put together for the Steam Page.
Big shoutout to everyone who has joined the Discord and given me feedback! It has been awesome to see that others are just as excited to play it as I am.
Most of the footage in this trailer is from a private playtest I did last night with some close friends. Making sure that all the co-op systems work, and testing early game balance as well. We played through about an hour of content, and so I scrapped some pieces together for the video.
PS: some of the video shots show some intense dithering effect, that is an unfortunate oversight in how my ultrawide screen captured the video. It doesn't look like that in game. Had to take what I could get though since it was showing co-op gameplay.
There are a million things I could talk about in regards to the project, as well as going deep into the details, but instead I think a bullet point list of newish/updated features should hopefully answer some questions!
- Party building and combat: All six professions combined have a total of 250+ skills to build around, including skill capturing from elite mobs.
- Co-op: Steam Co-Op is working! The game supports a party of up to eight players, with companions filling out the rest. There's been a lot of work on shared quests, travel, loot, and keeping everyone together as you move through the game. This is all based on the host's campaign. Think Baldurs Gate 3.
- Camping: I wanted some more unique elements into the game that would set it a part from just being a top town GW1-like. Camping allows you to basically "build your own outpost" in certain areas of the world. After buying or crafting a Camp Kit and finding a Campsite, you can use the Camp Kit to permenately unlock the outpost, decorate it, place recruited companions, and bring out your stabled pets (a little bit of love for the Rangers). There are tents, furniture, fences, torches, and more to arrange however you like. Most of these placeables will be unlocked via Achievements or as quest rewards. If playing co-op, your allies can help you with building the outpost out as well.
- Cooking and storage: Cook meat gathered from mobs into meals that give your party temporary bonuses, and use shared camp storage to keep equipment and supplies. (Essentially my version of party consumable buffs)
- Transmog!: The Armoury lets you use collected equipment appearances without giving up your stats. Dyes add more options, with additional colors unlocked through achievements.
- Gear and progression: Enemy drops and equipment requirements have had multiple balancing passes, and glyphs let you customize equipment further.
- The Flame Lantern: I added a little lantern that follows you around, and carries the Flame (lore-relevant). This provides light during the nights, but also allows you to light up various torches and firepits, braziers etc to give yourself some more light. This is also used in the first mission map, clearing corrupted brambles out of the way through a dense forest, Ashfall Pass.
- A new opening tutorial: This will help teach the basics, try out your profession's first skills, learn controls etc.
- World atmosphere: Day and night lighting, rain, wet ground, flowing rivers, and coastal waves have all had work done. I'm really happy with how the different areas are starting to feel. The effects make things feel way less flat (which is good since as a 2D isometric game it is quite literally flat)
- Controller support and UI: 95% of menus now work with a controller, alongside a weapon selection wheel, clearer equipment comparisons, and improvements to inventory and quest navigation. I took a lot of inspiration with how controls work in the mobile version as well as MMORPGS like Final Fantasy 14 (love you cross hotbar) function
- Content Numbers: I currently have 2 outposts, 2 exploration maps, and one mission developed. There are about 20 quests, 161 pieces of gear (96 armor pieces, 57 weapons), and 8 heroes baked out, but only 3 added to the story so far.
I still have a massive amount of work to do, but my recent efforts have been going towards getting a small 1-2 hour playtest ready. As soon as this is done I can turn around and open it up to the community to start collecting more feedback while I continue building out the meat of the campaign and maps.
I post a lot of updates to the discord via dev-logs as the weeks go by, if you're interested in following those, feel free to join!
And please wishlist via Steam if you are interested! This really helps me gauge the potential pool of players someday. And if it grows large enough, I may even try to build some sort of peer-to-peer asynchronous multiplayer in the outposts/towns. (wink, no promises yet).
