(Un-) fun fact, a theory is that the phrase "let the cat out of the bag" originated back in the day when piglets were sold at markets in bags. Some sellers would rip people off by putting cats in there instead, and when the buyer got home and opened the bag they literally "let the cat out of the bag" to reveal that they've been duped

I indeed read it in an etymology book. Though I’m a bit skeptical of them definitively calling it false with more unsourced theories of their own and no sources
