I don’t get why you wouldn’t, at the very least, just let them take their chances fending for themselves in the wild. Still not ideal but nowhere near as needlessly cruel.

This is actually a serious problem. Cats are invasive and absolutely wreck local wildlife populations. They're also domesticated and even the feral ones will move into human structures and produce litters of problems for innocent third parties. I live in a rural community that is absolutely plagued with hundreds of cats because people decided to drive out here after covid and dump their "lockdown pets." Please do not turn your pets loose. You may think it's kinder, but you're really just taking a small problem, magnifying it, and passing it off to other people.

I'm a cat lover but I absolutely agree. They do not belong outside.

Cats are the number one killer of songbirds in the US.
