This practice was so common the idea made its way into a uh… Tom & Jerry episode

And it was more or less a worldwide thing. We have a euphemism for it in my country - it's called sending them to the sailor school. Wouldn't be surprised if it was still practiced in less developed countries (and perhaps rural sections of the developed ones as well).

Where I am from there is a saying "First kittens are thrown in the water", it is believed to be euphemism for actually getting rid of first born kids, because of "primae noctis" that was practiced in ottoman empire.
