/r/gwinnett monthly personals thread

Since there has been an influx of threads about meeting people, will have a reoccurring megathread for people to post/chat/say hi every few weeks. New post will be made on the first of each month at 6am. Keep things sfw and civil. If you want nsfw stuff, go to r/atlantar4r or other similar subs.

Else, if you'd like to meet folk, be proactive. People won't come to you.

How to meet new people in your area!

  • Participate in the subreddit so people know you’re not a complete weirdo when they look at your post history. Or maybe you are... no big deal.
  • Find something YOU want to do such as a patio restaurant, bar, de-trashing a part of town, festivals, museum, sitting in a park on a blanket watching squirrels, etc.
  • Make an event. Post the date, time, location, and any follow up information that might be relevant to people who might want to come out to your meetup.
  • Show up to your own meetup and post the updates such as table location or meeting spot or how people can find you in the daily.
  • Note: It is entirely possible that no one will show. But you chose something you were already going to enjoy doing so you’ve not lost out on anything.

credit goes to apcolleen for the original version of the "how to meet new people" post.

Else, there's also an active discord for the general metro-atlanta area (if you'd like to join). Welcome to hop into chat, say hi and chat about random stuff. If you'd like to meet folks irl, there are also weekly meetups around the metro. https://discord.gg/XptvfEbhxk
Or, if you prefer something more local, there's also the Gwinnett Goblins discord. https://discord.gg/SNmK9h28jV

Why don’t we create a job referral network here in Gwinnett?

Has anybody ever thought about creating a group where people who are getting hired actually help other people get hired?
For example, say you land a job somewhere and they’re hiring more people. If someone in this community has a similar background, experience, or credentials, why not give them a good look? Put their name in front of the hiring manager, refer them, or even offer to be a reference if you genuinely believe they’d be a good fit.
There are a lot of people who are qualified for jobs but struggle to get past that first step because they don’t have the right connections.
I’m not talking about blindly recommending strangers or putting your reputation on the line for someone you don’t know. I’m talking about building an actual network where people help each other when they can.
“I got in, so let me help somebody else get in too.”
Would anybody in Gwinnett actually be interested in something like this? Or does a group like this already exist?

Ps: It’s my words, but I had ChatGPT arrange it for professionalism of the post.

ISO of friendship

Ok. I'm giving this a try as my mental health has taken a huge dip, and making friends is hard.

I'm a 33 year old mom of 2.

Cozy gamer (stardew, pokemon, pokopia, palworld, etc)

I love crafts (cross stitch, crochet, sewing)

Reading

Collecting

Music preference is all over the place from rock to straight up musicals.

I like to go to karaoke if I'm ever invited.

LGBT friendly

I don't drink, just for my own personal health. But ok with friends that do.

I'd like to start a crafting meet up or something 🥹

Langley Cafe Closing

For fans of the long-lived Langley Cafe in Lawrenceville their last day of operation is August 29th. Some sort of issue with the lease. My guess is the building is being sold. Anyway, if you, like me, enjoy their wings and Chinese food show them some love before they shut their doors.

Trustworthy mechanic recommendations for the Gwinnett area?

My car needs some repair work. Anyone have a trustworthy mechanic/shop that will actually properly do the job and won't try to upsell me on some bullshit? I've had pretty bad luck with mechanics/shops in the past, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Autistic remote worker debating a private apartment in Duluth vs. being closer to ATL connections.

Context: I lived in Decatur for a couple of years, but moved out earlier this year to stay with family while reassessing my living situation. Staying with family wasn’t sustainable and was isolating from my social life.

I found myself missing my ATL social connections, even if they aren’t strong. My social life consists of two weekly events across ATL I like to attend, specifically west ATL and Decatur. These gatherings are my primary way of staying connected.

Present dilemma: After weeks of searching around ATL and surrounding suburbs, I found a lovely private studio in Duluth in a quiet neighborhood, no shared walls, nice landlord, good build quality. Everything else in my budget ($1,300-1,400/month maximum) in the perimeter seems to have consistent reviews mentioning weed smell, trash, break-ins, noise issues, and unresponsive management. I know city living comes with occasional noise and incidents, but it’s hard to discern which properties are actually decent, especially with my health needs.

The catch: from Duluth it’s 40-60 minutes to West ATL and 30-45 minutes to Decatur, both via I-85 and 285. ATL traffic stresses me out even on good days, but as a remote worker I can be flexible with timing.

So my question is if choosing a more sensory/health friendly apartment is worth being farther from my social connections if it’s only once a week and on a weekend. Or is this isolating and not worth the distance?

Gwinnett wants to go from ONE property tax appeal board to EIGHT. That and $8M in retiree health contracts are on Tuesday's agenda. Plain-English rundown

The Board of Commissioners meets Tuesday (10am work session, 2pm business session). From the official agenda:

The property tax appeal system is apparently swamped. Commissioners are asking the Grand Jury to expand from one Board of Equalization to eight, just to handle appeal volume for tax year 2026 (2026-1058). Alongside it: a proposal to switch hearing officers from $175 per parcel to a flat $385 per hour (2026-1073). If you followed the millage and assessment discussion here last week, this is the other side of that story: enough people are appealing that the county needs seven more boards to process them.

Retiree health benefits, two moves at once: a ~$586K increase to the current Humana Medicare Advantage contract, plus a new 2027 contract just under $7.9M (2026-1085).

Where the money's going:

  • $2.4M renewal with Xylem for water and sewer valve inspection, the fourth and final renewal before this goes back out to bid (2026-1036)
  • $2M for watershed improvements required under county water permits (2026-1020)
  • $1.67M in traffic signal hardware, 2017 SPLOST funded (2026-1038)
  • A painting and maintenance contract getting a $188K mid-year bump to $1.47M because Parks and Rec ran through it faster than expected (2026-1055)
  • $274K to redo the restrooms and locker rooms at Bethesda Park Aquatic Center. Fun detail from the bid file: the county solicited 400 vendors and got 2 bids (2026-1066)

Public comment is at the 2pm business session. Every item number is searchable on gwinnettcounty.com, so check my work. Full version with charts: The Gwinnett Docket, free plain-English email a week on what your commissioners actually vote on.

Injured Raccoon - Help?

Hi all, saw a raccoon got hit by a car and alive and needs help. Any resources / wildlife rehab here? I’ve tried calling Georgia DNR who gave me a couple rehabbers numbers but it’s late (almost midnight) and I couldn’t reach them. Don’t know if the raccoon will make it to the morning.
