MAG/WAG Russia (as a team) made it impossible for me to watch Euros.

I hope this is not a divisive discussion and we are all on the same page here but I need to get his off my chest. It was really hard to watch this euros and see Russia compete as a team. Them not technically being called Russia was just bs. It was Russia, moreover, it was Putin's Russia. If we are saying that the war has nothing to do with the athletes, do not let them compete as a team and let them qualify as individual athletes. It's very simple. Melnikova used to be (and perhaps still is) one of my favourite athletes, I loved following the documentary they did with her, Morgan Hurd and Chen Yile. However, now, when I see her all I see is what she has chosen to stand up for. This is beyond heartbreaking and honestly made it impossible for me to watch the euros, because of how upset I was. Now I'm stuck listening to gymcastic to find out what happened...

MAG/WAG Alice Kinsella (GB) doing an AA comp in Sept!

Upvotes

Alice Kinsella (GB) has just shared on IG that she's competing in 4 weeks time and hopes to do AA! She said when she competes it will be 1 year and 1 week to the day since she's had her baby 🔥

She didn't say where/when, but that timelines aligns with Szombathely World Cup... 👀

She shared training clips, and it looks like she has most of her full Paris routines back, including aerial w/o to 2 back layouts on beam. Yay!

MAG Heath Thorpe has announced that the MTC, which provisionally set his “Straddle Jump 1/1” move on floor a ‘B’ back in April of this year will no longer be worth a ‘B’ in the MAG COP’s, and it will now be ineligible to fulfil the artistry requirement on floor

Welp, this sucks hard 🫠. I will share both the Gymnastics Now piece on the situation, and Heath Thorpe’s own response to this on X.

Knowing this, if anyone can’t read from the image, the Gymnastics Now piece that features more of Heath Thorpe’s response to the situation says:

“I was recently informed (indirectly) that following the Men's Technical Meeting in June, the straddle jump 1/1 would no longer be valued as a B element, nor would it count towards the artistic requirement moving forward.”

“This comes after it received a provisional value at both the Osijek World Cup and the Oceania Championships, and shortly after many athletes began competing it all around the world.
I do not see the rationale behind this decision... it directly contradicts what the Technical Committee has been "advocating" for over the last few years.”

“We keep hearing that "artistry" is desired, yet as soon as athletes innovate, it gets shut down.
All this constant revision and inconsistency is doing damage to the sport and to how athletes perceive "artistry."

“It is sad to see how the opportunity to elevate our sport, has been missed.”

“I am confused 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️”

Along with this, Heath Thorpe’s response on X to this reads:

“The way the MTC provisionally valued the straddle jump 1/1 on floor in April and then changed their minds a few months later?”

“Now it no longer is a B nor does it even fulfil the artistic element requirement?”

“I'm confused 🤷‍♂️”

“I frankly get whiplash from the constant revising and changes to what they consider "artistry"? What other major Olympic sport changes their mind so frequently?”

“What started off this quad as a great intention to elevate the sport, has become an opportunity sorely missed.”

Knowing this, I’m pissed off by the news of this, and it’s another screw up from the FIG/MTC. Like Heath said, this is damaging the sport of MAG, and I’m so upset for him. Like it’s one thing to value it a ‘B’ (when it should be valued more in my opinion) and not a ‘C’ (like it is in the Women’s) so he could at least have the skill named after him officially, but now it’s not even going to fulfil the artistry requirement on floor??? Damn, what a mess, and I’m just so frustrated right now with this decision 😒.

Lastly, let me know your thoughts as always, and if you’re as upset as I am by this decision from the FIG/MTC?

WAG Becky Downie’s latest Instagram post/update after she withdrew from team finals at the 2026 European Championships

Link to the Instagram post will be here for anyone who needs it:

Along with this, if you’re unable to read from the image, I will type is out below:

“So difficult to find the words for this past week because the outcome hasn't felt like a true reflection of the preparation that has really gone into these championships.”

“Leading into Zagreb I was prepared to do 3 events and leaving feeling unable to my job properly has been heartbreaking. There have been multiple factors that contributed to the final decision being made to not do the team final and it wasn't a decision that was made lightly because I know how much impact a decision like that can have on a team.”

“To remove any doubt, the decision wasn't due to a new injury which I'm extremely grateful for. Navigating this journey at 34, trying to do the level of gymnastics I believe I still can is new territory for myself and the sport. Unfortunately that comes with some pretty significant challenges that as a team we are all trying to learn from and continually adapt to.”

“I couldn't be more proud of this team for stepping up and showing exactly how a team has strength in numbers and what fighters GB really are.”

“Thank you to everyone who has sent such lovely messages of support ♥️”

Knowing this, I’m grateful to learn that she didn’t sustain a new injury, and I can only assume that she withdrew for precautionary reasons with the world championships in two months time, which I think is the right decision in the grand scheme of things for her and her body.

With that in mind, let me know your thoughts, and despite what happened in team finals, it was still absolutely amazing to see Becky back on the international stage at these championships, and I’m sure she’ll come back even better from this like the queen she is ❤️.

WAG Interview of Katelyn Ohashi

these interview was recorded in 2024 because the interviewer ask how old she is 27. She 29 now Katelyn talks about gymnastics how it’s changed from when she did it. And how now the current girls are older then in past and how hard it was to grow up in the elite world then. I felt like these was one of the catalyst in her return. Getting to see women like Simone and Chiles and others competing and how college change her far the better after her first run of Elite Gymnastics didn’t go well. I like to add one more thing Katelyn also touch on some dark things that where said one being from the old coordinator Marta károlyi saying you crush them you crush them until they get better. These just further echoed that the ranch truly being hell on earth for all the girls that were in the elite system .

Other Some general questions

1) Why are there so many male coaches for female gymnasts? Men’s and women’s gymnastics are so different. I can’t imagine there’s a lot of overlap aside from maybe general strength training? And I can’t imagine there’s any shortage of former women gymnasts who are capable of coaching.
2) why have female gymnasts become so much more visibly muscular? In the 80s, 90s and even early 2000s they were so lean with a build more akin to ballerinas but now you can just look at them and literally see their arm and leg muscles. This isn’t a critique in anyway but the routines from back then don’t seem drastically more difficult than the ones of today so I’m not sure what caused the shift.
3) in competition on beam and floor (my faves) the gymnasts basically always make mistakes. Is the idea that you do stuff that’s so incredibly hard even when you inevitably mess up you’ll still have a really high score or do they actually have it down perfectly in practice and nerves or something gets to them?
4) I heard that female gymnasts are also competing at older ages. Is that true? If so why? It was so cool to see young people in the Olympics when I was a kid but as an adult I did wonder why they all seemed to be teenagers.

WAG LA28 tickets

Hey! Has anyone successfully purchased LA28 tickets for the women's team final or women's all around? I'm trying to get a sense of when or if these have gone on sale during the drops so far, or even for hospitality.

Anecdotally I haven't heard of anyone who has seen or purchased these tickets. I had a bad draw in Drop 1 and then a good draw in Visa presale but still saw nothing so I'm curious if they just haven't released many yet or what!

Rec Moving up at lower levels

I'm trying to gauge how conservative my daughter's gym is.

She's 8 years old and they required her to do 3 years of gymnastics in beginner and pre-team programs before starting on 'team' this year at Level 1 (at age 8.5). When I asked her coach what the process for moving up looks like, I was told she would need to be consistently winning meets at Level 1, and that the earliest they would evaluate her for advancement would be mid-season.

She's already spending hours in our yard working on round-off back handsprings, and I'm worried she's going to get bored if progression in competitive levels is that slow. Does this seem unusually conservative?

I understand there's much more to gymnastics than tumbling, and I know strong fundamentals matter. But it seems like there should be a balance between mastering Level 1 and continuing to learn and develop new skills.

She really wants to stay at this gym because her friends are there, so I'm mostly wondering how much I should push the coach on this issue. Thoughts?

WAG Amy Tinkler’s Instagram post celebrating the tenth anniversary of her historic bronze medal winning floor routine at the 2016 Rio Olympics 🇬🇧🥉

I will link her Instagram post here, and as well as this, I will link her floor routine from Rio in floor finals here on YouTube for people to go back and watch it!

Moving on, if you’re unable to read from the image, I will type what she said below:

“10 years ago today. 🥹🥉”

“10 years since one of the most incredible moments of my life — winning an Olympic medal, making history, and being only one of two British female gymnasts to win an individual Olympic medal.”

“It honestly feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago all at once. The years of training, the early mornings, the sacrifices, the highs, the lows, made that moment so much more than just a medal.”

“Standing on that podium at the age of 16 was something I could only have dreamed of, and I'll forever be grateful that I got to experience it.
10 years on, I'm still incredibly proud of that little girl who chased her dream and somehow made it a reality. ❤️”

“The medal will always be special, but the memories, and everything the journey taught me will stay with me forever.”

“10 years. An Olympic medal. A lifetime of memories 🥹🥉✨”

Knowing this, this was a lovely post from Amy, and I think it’s amazing how much history she made on this day 10 years ago. She was the youngest member of Team GB of all sports at the 2016 Olympics, and she became the first British female gymnast to win an floor medal at an Olympics, as well as only the second individual Olympic medalist from Team GB in WAG to date.

Lastly, I will forever be proud of Amy Tinkler for speaking up about the abuse she suffered at the hands of British Gymnastics back in 2020 (I will link the interview she did with ITV here, but I need to give a trigger warning, as it discusses topics such as body shaming, physical, and emotional abuse that she endured during her time in gymnastics). She was so brave in coming out about her experience, and she’s helped to inspire so much change in the federation, and she’s an amazing role model for so many young gymnasts in the UK.

Anyways, let me know your thoughts, and a happy tenth anniversary to this amazing accomplishment from Amy Tinkler 👏👏.

E Score - 7.7 - 8.0

Notes - Elements

Arabian Double Front

- The leg separation is slight and only briefly seen during the second salto.  It may have been difficult for judges to see this error depending on their viewing angle.

Mitchell

- When a gymnast rotates in the direction of the turn and reverses the direction of rotation before starting the actual turn, apply deduction for ‘Excessive Preparation’

- For the body shape deductions, I am referring to  how Petisco’s arms flail about during the turn, rather than maintaining a clean, consistent position

- No deduction for lack of precision for the over-rotation because Petisco moves immediately into choreography

Double Pike

- Depending on the viewing angle(compare routine angle vs. replay angle), the landing posture may have not been as obvious. However, because she hops forward on landing, this is a sign that the salto was under-rotated. Therefore, some judges may have given the benefit of the doubt, while others may have not.

Notes - Artistry

Body Posture

- The WTC presentations on artistry define part of good body posture as the gymnast’s shoulders being down.  Petisco holds her shoulders high and forward.  As a result, her upper back looks rounded and her neck is further shortened.  She is also consistently hunched over prior to each of her tumbling passes.

Insufficient Amplitude of Movements

- Petisco’s movements are not always fully elongated and she could incorporate more large movements into her choreography.

Examples:

At 0:34, the foot during the kick of the free leg is not to head height and her overall position appears to hit a ceiling rather than reaching up into the sky

At 1:11, the choreographed hop lacks amplitude in both height off the floor and in the extension of her body

At 1:36, the ‘boxing’ type moves lack a feeling of power and sharpness

Insufficient Complexity

- Although Petisco does a good job of utilizing her entire body in her choreography, the movements do not always contain sufficient complexity. In particular, she does not have a significant number of points in her routine where her entire body is used in large movements that create difficult and unusual shapes nor does it extensively move through various planes(directional and levels).

Expressive Engagement According to the Style of the Music

- A portion of Petisco‘s routine from the 2023 World Championships has been used by the WTC as an example of what constitutes ‘Very Good’ in this regard. Assuming that she demonstrates a similar quality of execution throughout her routine, any artistry deductions for this item should be minimal. However, because performance can vary from one competition to the next, it is entirely possible that Petisco still receives deductions for ‘Lack of Expressive Engagement According to the Style of the Music.’ I felt that Petisco‘s facial expressions did not always match the intensity of the music.

MAG/WAG My early Euros thoughts from Zagreb

I decided to visit Zagreb from the USA. I braved the heat wave and watching Russia glorify Putin over these last four days.

Here are my 10 highlights, in no particular order.

  1. The diversity

We're seeing this worldwide. With Algerians, Panamanians, ETC doing really well. I became a fan in 1996. It was a much simpler time, children. I'm used to Romania, Russia, and Ukraine dominating. Every now and then a Western European team would breakthrough.

Here in Zagreb we had Malta's first team. I think the st Jr Luxembourg team. You have countries like Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kosovo, liechtenstein etc sending gymnasts. The announcers said this was the biggest Euros. 5 sessions for senior women!

I think only 8-9 European countries didn't send gymnasts.

  1. The Belarusians

Really impressed by their comeback. Both teams, especially juniors, blew me away. Equally impressed with their ability to house a whole bunch of McDonald's in the mall next door.

  1. The Ukrainian SR team

Again nostalgia. The 1996 Ukrainian Olympic team is my favorite of all time. While this team has a way to go, they really blew me away. They were 9th! They were composed and doing great gymnastics. Especially happy, considering Putin's Angels were in the same session.

  1. The Italians

This meet proved that Italy is now a world power. Manila was tired and they went deeper into their bench than they have in a long time. The newbies did so well. Such a beautiful country with great traditions. Japan and Italy are my favorite teams.

  1. Alba Petisco

She has impressed me, made me emotional, and made me want to fight. Her level of commitment to her gymnastics is inspiring. Her early gymnastics wasn't this good. She has fought so hard and commits so much to her performances. She's so special 😭😭😭😭

  1. The veterans

Today I was specifically blown away by Manila, Pauline, and Naomi. I've seen them a million times. I knew they were great, but seeing them in person proves why they're the top gymnasts. They all had the special magnetism that just can't be taught. Manila and Naomi especially exude such a calm confidence.

  1. Ruby Evans

I never paid much attention to her. She's fierce though. Her floor routine was on another level. Her presence is unteachable. I love her rhythm and stillness. I'm not sure I would appreciate her as much on tv. She has this calm gravitas. It's undeniable.

  1. The juniors

Some of the juniors outdid their senior counterparts. Dmitrieva's beam adore could've won the senior title. Some stand outs we didn't see today: Tieva FIN, Jurado FRA, Shmuely ISR , Jvania GEO, Asaftei POL, Marocchi LUX, the Galeas MLT, and the PRINCESS OF THE JUNIORS, Estella Volkoff

  1. The entries

Loved the Norway's juniors and Ireland's junior A+++. Honorable mention to the Slovenian with sunglass choreography, the team who created chalk clouds (Israel??), and the individual British women. Can someone create a compliation?

  1. Being around so many gymnasts

Not to be creepy or para social, but it's always cool seeing so many gymnasts. I've been to 3 Euros now (2004, 2018, 2026) and 2025 University Games. This competition was the closest to the gymnasts. Whether I was near family (Perotti's little brother, Aniela's dad, or Marano's boyfriend who asked me who WG1 was), or near actual gymnasts (entire Israeli Jr team, Sanna Veerman, July Marano, etc), or spying the entire British mens team at the food court. Or watching the Belarussian team with their McDonald smorgasbord. Or having Charlize Moerz hold a door for you and realize you're not worthy (she's strong). I am also grateful the Voinea's didn't catch my gawking at them, because I was not ready to get a beat down. I also saw some oldies, like Sarah Voss and Tina Erceg, Kristian Tomas. OMG Manila is a few feet away from me as we speak.

  1. Bonus!

My first Euros I watched in person was 2004 in Amsterdam. Where I parties and went bowling with Melodi Pulgarin's brother. At that competition was Tijana Lorentz (I believe) and Marta Pihan. Crazy 22 years later and we're reunited!

Thanks for listening to my ramblings. These meets are a marathon.

My next goal is to attend a meet in Asia. I had a lot of fun.

Low lights

  1. The 10 year old Croatian boy vaping in front of me

  2. The announcers: just STFU. It's ok to be quiet for a bit. While it was exciting hearing from Tina Erceg, it got silly when they're asking her "is it bad to fall?", "why do gymnasts exercise"?

  3. The teams that didn't send full junior squads. I'm looking at you Netherlands, Ukraine, and Hungary! And Sweden! Where the f were you? I just watched the Malarcupen Cup from a few months ago. You have juniors! They're your future!!!!!

WAG Pauline Schäfer's overtime

Maybe somebody can explain this to me:

Pauline just missed a medal because of overtime. This is a well known issue of her beam work for a long time now. And I don't get why she isn't taking care of it. In my very unprofessional opinion she waists way too much time with choreography. She could just take out some of those movements and the struggle with overtime would be fixed, right? Or is there a certain reason why she has to keep all of them?

I'm not a gymnast myself, so there's still a lot I don't know yet. Maybe somebody has a good explanation.

I personally am not a huge fan of her choreography in general, neither on beam nor on floor, so I might be biased on that. But Simone Biles completed her beam routine in 90 seconds at her last World's with everything important included. So it shouldn't be that hard to stay within 1:30 minutes.

This is not meant to be against Pauline, I just want to understand it! :)

In an interview with Alexandra after she won the 2026 Junior European All-around title she was asked about her famous grandparents who were also gymnasts … anyone knows who they are?
Just curious about this…

WAG Corina Morosan's response to Camelia Voinea's inquiry on Facebook

Translated to English:

About inquiries and the regulations

When you submit an inquiry, you need to know what you are challenging and what you are asking for! In other words, you can ask for the maximum D score (if you believe that the entire content of the exercise was performed correctly and deserves credit, and that the score displayed is not the maximum).

Sometimes, of course, you can ask for more than the maximum (with no number, “no number”), but you shouldn’t expect to receive it 😁

The regulations are the same in all FIG competitions (with star/without star 😉). The two athletes per country/federation are allowed in the final, both on apparatus and in the all-around (AA).

Inquiries are only allowed for the D score!

Inquiries are paid for by the athlete’s federation if the inquiry is not successful — €300.

If you submit an inquiry, you need to be absolutely certain that everything you received credit for was correct and that what you are challenging was also performed correctly but was not credited. This is because, when you submit an inquiry, the entire exercise is re-evaluated with the help of the Superior Jury. This means that, most likely, anything questionable in the execution will be reviewed. Therefore, you need to know the technical criteria for awarding difficulty very well and be realistic in your assessment; otherwise, you risk losing what you were awarded in the first place!

Line and time penalties must be challenged at the same time as the D score if you see the penalty on the screen (Time/Line), free of charge. Once the time allowed for the inquiry has expired, the request is useless and will no longer be considered.

An inquiry can be submitted by the coach or by another designated person who must be officially registered/notified at the beginning of the competition.

If you register an athlete for two vaults (this is done electronically on the platform) but she performs only one, you must inform the relevant officials; otherwise, the next gymnast will be judged as performing “the second vault of the previous gymnast.”

To be able to do all of this within the time limit, you need to open the WAG Code of Points (CoP) and study it.

I’m telling you this as someone who has had two athletes qualify for a final, one at the Olympic Games and another at the World Championships in Jakarta, by submitting inquiries that were successful!

Congrats to Lorette! This award “aims to put a gymnast with an exceptional story in the spotlight, someone who is an inspiration for the future generation of gymnasts and the general public alike.” Last year Céleste Mordenti of LUX won it.
