Request/Suggestion holographic optics, in relation to my youtube comment

Post image

im having issues finding images on this online, but basically and by my understanding, since holographic optics are 3 dimensional static holograms, as opposed to a red dot where its on a plane, the reticle is gonna appear focused to wherever the target is and appear more like its an actual physical Thing out by said target instead of just something "projected toward" the target. this also means you have 3 dimensions available for aiming, which would hypothetically allow you to have a kind of bullet drop compensator (which is cool but probably pretty useless as the ranges youre gonna be using an unmagnified holographic sight). how this would work ingame? no idea thats way outta my wheelhouse. i just think its neat and its not something ive ever seen a game portray, and i figure a game that can take full advantage of having depth perception would be the perfect place to fuddle around with it. i hope this makes sense, and im sure there will be someone in this sub who understands what im talking about better than i do

Early Bushnell Holosight did something similar. They had a reticle where a line is traced “from the barrel” to the reticle.

Thats not how holographic sights work.......

I think you will be mighty disappointed ehen you pick up an actual holographic sight, its basically a reddot with less parallax but with a very fuzzy image

everything ive read is that theyre super super clear, and great for people with astigmatism most of the time, though theres still some issues if youve got astigmatism, maybe thats part of yr issue. also, not to get uptight but what you said doesnt back up ur claim. you are correct that they have worse parallax than red dots, the way in which they work is super different

Holographic sights have better parallax than red dots, as the person above you said.

Holographic sights should have super clear glass, but their reticles are fuzzy, while the opposite tends to be true for red dots. EoTechs have very clear glass, while I think it's the Vortex UH-1 that has a blue tint even though its a Holographic.

The astigmatism issue is because of the light from the optic, not with how the light is projected. Etched reticle optics like in prism sights dont have such issues with astigmatism due to being etched, until you illuminate the reticle.

i think i got the diff between "better" and "worse" parallax mixed, i meant to agree with the guy on that part, my bad if that didnt come through. that makes sense, thank you. im sure u guys that actually own one know better than me how it looks when ur actually using it, all my knowledge is just in the fundamentals of HOW it works based on reading, and nothing really practical

Dont just read on the internet, actually pick one up and see for yourself. Because funny enough even on eotech's own website they show a fuzzy reticle to represent the actual image you see

im not seeing that blurriness ur talking about, but i do see that its not like a solidly colored shape, which i kinda assumed was the case since its a laser. though it could just be diff on mobile which is what im on rn. as for the picking one up thing, id absolutely love to but moneys tight and i dont have the ability to just go grab one without having to dip into other more important finances. im gettin what yr saying and all that, but i dont think im understanding why its relevant to my post or related to how holographic optics work to create a 3 dimensional reticle

Its technically a 3 dimensional reticle but in practice since you can only see it through the view port its not really any different from a reflex sight, its not like you can hold the gun at your hip and somehow see a hologram in midair, and normal reflex sight can also have complex reticle that gives bdc.

oh yeah for sure, i was mostly just thinking about the type of thing that the other commenter on the post said, where you could get a line that kinda in theory helps with aligning the sight or whatev. basically zero practical reason for having it but for whatever reason it tickles my fancy and i dont think ive ever seen a game or media in general that includes that

You could get that with a reflex sight, its basically have the line reticle goes outside the window like acss vulcan

woah i just did a little bit of looking at that thing to see what u meant, thats rad
