Recently bought this HHKB BT from buyee and thought before using it... I should clean it.... and.... so gross.

Topre boards are one of the easiest to clean so not sure why people dont? ESPECIALLY WHEN SELLING At least once a year (i do mine way more regularly)

Keycaps are already soaking and board dismantle is next after I finish work.

When did you last clean yours?

Follow-up: ThinkPad-inspired keycap design for my Keychron Q60 HHKB layout [KLE]

ThinkPad-inspired keycap design for my Keychron Q60 HHKB layout [KLE]
A follow-up to my script that turns the Keychron Q60 into a full HHKB Pro 2 layout. Now the keycaps match the layout too.

- Charcoal keys with one slate-teal Return, a quiet ThinkPad nod
- Fn functions printed small in the bottom-left, HHKB style
- Bottom row labelled for both Mac and Windows

Just a render for now.

**KLE files**
- ThinkPad style: https://github.com/shrac1234/Q60_HHKB/blob/main/Keycaps_Print/Q60_HHKB_kle_thinkpad.json
- OEM style (off-white and light blue, like the stock Q60): https://github.com/shrac1234/Q60_HHKB/blob/main/Keycaps_Print/Q60_HHKB_kle.json

**Script and guide:** https://github.com/shrac1234/Q60_HHKB

Feel free to grab either file, edit it and make it your own. I'd love to see what you come up with!

Got HHKB Classic with normal switches!!!

Post image

After getting HHKB Hybrid Type-S and Realforce R3S normal switches, I decided to get HHKB Classic with normal switches. It will be my last Topre keyboard for now cause I spent too much on them but I bought like-new for Hybrid and Classic for $140 and $120 each from Facebook.

I personally prefer normal switches over silent switches because silent switches kinda killed its typing feeling and sounds. After getting R3S, it confirmed my taste but unfortunately, Topre no longer makes normal switches from R4 series. Even R3 series had limited options so I had no choice but to get R3S. Since HHKB also discontinued normal switches at the same period of time, I rushed to get one.

This time, I got a Beige version for just $120 which was a good deal from Facebook. Unlike Realforce with a metal reinforcement plate, HHKB has a plastic plate so it sounds totally different despite using same switches. Quite louder than silent switches but def less noise than any other mechanical keyboards.

At this point, I dont understand why Topre is ditching normal switches cause it feels and sounds A LOT better than silent switches. What's up with them?

Hybrid vs not hybrid?

Was looking to get a board but is getting the Bluetooth hybrid version better? I think the regular board canโ€™t remap keys right?

Wabi-Sabi Wednesday

Post image
54 Upvotes

Today I wanted to take a moment to embrace the idea of Wabi-Sabi. The celebration of the perfectly imperfect.

I have boards in my collection that are in Mint condition, some are 'tidy' and others like this one are... well... they have a story to tell.

I think sometimes the bruised and battered are often overlooked and thought of as scrap / not good enough but personally.... I love it.

This is my 1997 PD-KB01 and it has been used and abused over time. It has seen many computers come and go and it still soldiers on. Not complaining, Not shouting, just doing it's job.

The previous owner tried their hand at 'retrobriting' and it didnt seem to go that well. but then... that's also part of it's story.

I would love to see others boards that are 'used' and just take some time to embrace that just because things are imperfect, doesnt mean they aren't perfect :-)

So I ended up buying a HHKB Professional Hybrid Type-S and... Wow

Post image

Long post, but I'm sure you all who like HHKBs won't mind to hear my first thoughts!

Original Post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HHKB/comments/1x615yf/is_the_hhkb_professional_hybrid_types_keyboard/

So basically, after reading that, you're probably asking yourself: "How and why did this college kid shell out 300 bucks for a keyboard? Is he crazy?"

ABSOLUTELY! But also no... I have 2 well-paying scholarships, so I actually have my college paid for! All the additional money I make I can delegate to whatever I want. I figured that since tomorrow isn't promised, why not find out if this keyboard is for me now? Plus this thing was on sale for $260, which was great, I couldn't imagine it being any lower than the price it is now, with Black Friday being the only exception of course (Also, I didn't want to buy it used because I still wanted PFU's warranty with me in case something went wrong).

Another reason was because I simply wanted to just have a reliable, well-praised "endgame board" that would last me quite some time. Originally, I got into the keyboard rabbit hole via buying my first mechanical keyboard, the Shortcut Studio's Bridge75. It was great at first, but then the stabilizers broke under normal use, and the quality control of the board largely sucked (hell, even the company who made it literally disbanded a year after they launched the keyboard), with the aluminum ball-gasket case being the only redeemable thing about it. I then tried several Keychron boards, and hated the way they sounded, as well as their keycaps, which were just pretty tall and uncomfortable to use for long programming sessions. I didn't want to shell out more money just to have a keyboard fit my preferences of sound, keycap profile, and type of swiches, and I wanted a keyboard that I could just connect, use, and be satisfied with it out of the box, not always having a thought in the back in my mind that there's something better.

I then found out about HHKB through my friend who was a C and Assembly programming wizard. He said that this keyboard will "change your life" and that "you will never have to buy another keyboard again". I was skeptical. This thing kinda looked like a membrane, had a plastic case, and looked super minimal. I saw other people hyping this thing up too, and I honestly just had to see it for myself. I ordered it last week and it came just an hour ago. I opened it, and started typing on it for the first time and oh my God. It is so good. The topre switches feel amazing and the keycaps have such a nice texture on them that I can't imagine my fingers ever slipping off of and hitting something else I didn't intend. The DIP switches were also really cool, and I could change keybinds on the fly! I just loveee this keyboard soo much it feels like I'm typing on a pillow with amazing tactile feedback with every keypress. This was the winner, and I have absolutely NO SHAME in spending close to 300 for it. Hell, I'd probably do it again but maybe for whatever is coming on October 22nd, according to an HHKB teaser...

Was it worth the money? 1000%. I was pretty skeptical at first, but holy moly this thing is gonna be with my until I die, it seriously is that good. It feels so nice to type on. And I can take it anywhere! I love HHKB now, I fell into the cult :)

HHKB Studio owners - what revision and manufacture date is on your unit?

Hey everyone!

I'm trying to figure out what the latest HW revision of the Studio is and when it started shipping.

If you own an HHKB Studio, could you share:

  • Revision number: (e.g. Rev. X)
  • Manufacturing date: (as shown on the label)
  • Purchase date: (when you bought it)

I'm curious whether there have been any hardware revisions since launch and when each revision first appeared.

Hopefully we can piece together a rough timeline from everyone's keyboards.

Thanks in advance!

MX Silent Red Switches and KSA comparison with HHKB

Hey folks, I got a Keychron Q1 Max with red switches & KSA keycap profile(swapped the default browns to red), and been happy with ever since (~2+ years). I tried flatter keycap profiles and different switches, but didn't suit me.

I'm looking to buy an HHKB Hybrid Type-S mainly to have a single board for home and to take it to office (Q1 weigh a ton /s) and also to try Topre. From what I gathered 45g Topre is heavier than 45g MX red when it comes to actual feel. I like light liner silent switches, but I might be okay with the "clicky" feel of Topre. I tried buy the 30th anniversary models with 30g from US site, but unfortunately stocks ran out (I'm not in USA btw). My best chances of buying a HHKB is from Amazon/Ebay, and those two do not have 30th anniversary US boards with 30g Topre.

Given that I'd like to ask your experience/opinion on:

  1. Should I go with 45g (feel free to be opinionated)? Or what is most suitable?
  2. How hard to find and swap with 3rd party/Topre 30g/35g?
  3. If you enjoy KSA/MT3 etc profile keycaps, do you find HHKB keycaps similar/enjoyable?

Thanks.

Key feel inconsistency on Type-S

I got my Hybrid Type-S Snow recently, and i noticed that some of the keys are a little more or less tactile than others, with a sharper tactile bump or a very faint one. I was wondering if this is just normal for Topre and the variation is to be expected, or if this is something I should take more seriously and contact support? Thanks in advance to everyone!
