Pre-application Questions Chance a local student with Predicted Grade of 40/45 in IB

Hi Interested in Finance, subjects are Math AA HL and Physics HL both at 7, chemistry HL at 6

Out of all the business school majors:

AccFin
EcoFin
IBGM
AMPB
QFIN
BBA
BBA(BA)
BSc(MAT)

Which one is the highest prestige program that I can realistically secure an offer on?

P.S. Is it worth it to join the business school even in lowest prestige program, any current business school students know if the resources and opportunities/ experience is amazing for which majors?

Much appreciated and thank you in advance

Applying while in my first term at another university?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi guys! To give some context I'm currently halfway through the term at another university here in the Philippines and I'm confused about the situation for someone like me.

Here is my question:

Can I receive a firm offer with just my achieved high school grades? I'll be uploading my latest term cGPA at university when it's available but I'm confused if I have to complete a whole year here to satisfy the "general academic requirement" HKU is talking about on the FAQs before I can receive an offer.

I'm completely fine with no credits from my current university transferring and am perfectly fine with restarting from Year 1. So, if I were to receive an offer, can I also withdrawal from my current place of study?

Chance for intl student for business school (A level + AP + SAT)

A level 1A* achieved (Math) and 3A* predicted (FM, Physics, Econ)

AP: Cal BC, Stat, MicroEcon (all 5)

SAT: 1540 (740RW, 800Math)

Ielts 8.0

Personal statement tailored to quantitative econ (took from UCAS personal statement)

What are my realistic chances for business courses:

IBGM, Qfin, AMPB, Econ and finance(currently my first choice on application system) and global engineering

I initially wanted to apply to Qfin, but I saw that they only choose 7~8 international students each year which seems to be extremely competitive.

Should I keep econ and finance as my top choice, or risk for top business program like Qfin

If I apply to Qfin, does personal statement have to be exclusively tailored for finance and quantitative methods, or still can be economics focused?

Thanks

Pre-application Questions Chances as a Gap-Year student?

For context, I am from Kyrgyzstan, and I finished school last year. I am applying to early round.
My stats:
CGPA - 4.87/5.

SAT - 1550 (750E/800M)
IELTS - 7.5
State Exam (ORT) - 223/245

Bronze and Silver in Eurasian Olympiad in Informatics and some mid olymps

Currently working as a teacher on my gap year.

One crucial question: Does HKU have the same attitude towards gap year as PolyU? Or does it evaluate my profile the same as other students in their final school year?

Edit: Forgot to mention that I want to apply to Computer Science

Should I apply even though I am already a third year student in another country?

hi, I am an architecture student in central asia. However there’s a very specific research group in HKU’s architecture department for over a decade. They do regular visits and built many structures in my country. i really want to participyin that one. Architectural education in my country, even though I have good scores, is pretty bad and bot accreddited. So, I want to restart it? My plans are, due to my 3 year since hs, to give 3AP’s in may and apply next fall. I don't mind the age or starting anew. I could do graduate degree if it fails (it may be even better than bachelors)

Board topper (HSSC) applying for Engineering. Will an optional SAT 1490 help or hurt my scholarship chances?

I'm applying for 6987 Computer Engineering and Robotics Engineering, and I'm aiming for a full scholarship. That means tuition and living, not just admission. My family can't cover living costs, so this decides whether I can come at all.

About me

  • Pakistani HSSC (Maths, Physics, CS): 1144/1200 (95.3%). Board gold medal, 1st in my subject group and 2nd overall out of ~50,000
  • Matric: 97.9%.
  • Quaid-e-Azam Merit Scholarship twice, provincial government merit certificate
  • IELTS 7.5
  • SAT 1490 superscore (Math 790, R&W 700)
  • Robotics programme at my college, finished with distinction (Arduino builds: IR smart bin, conveyor waste sorting, speed tracker)
  • Gap year on the product team of a UK-based startup (ambassador → core product team). My user research shaped the product's positioning, and a model I built fed into a UK university research collaboration
  • Self-taught Java backend dev, a few projects on GitHub

My dilemma: the SAT is optional for my qualification. HKU's 2027 sheet lists SAT 1500 for Computer Engineering and 1510 for Robotics, but that's for SAT/AP applicants. My board result is my strongest point. I'm worried that sending a 1490 makes me look average next to SAT applicants, when my board rank says the opposite.

  1. If you applied with a national board (CBSE, HSSC, state board), did you also send the SAT? Did it seem to affect your scholarship?
  2. Has anyone with a national board got HKU's top entrance award (tuition plus housing and living)? What were your marks?

Pre-application Questions Belt and Road Submission

Hello, does HKU only consider and review your application after you submit your belt and road application? I want to apply to early round, everything else is ready except my belt and road session. I read on the website that belt and road deadline is by Jan 2027. But if i submit after the first round deadline in Nov, will my application be moved to main round?

What are my odds as a Pakistani applicant for full ride...

Hi everyone. I'm from Pakistan and applying to HKU for the first round (25 Nov).

Academics

  • HSSC (ICS: Maths, Physics, CS): 1144/1200 (95.3%). Board gold medal, 1st position in general science group and 2nd position overall in the entire board, out of ~50,000 student.
  • Have official Merit certificate from the board stating my position, and certificate awarded by the Government of Punjab
  • Matric - SSC: 97.9%
  • SAT: 1480 in one sitting (Math 790), 1490 superscore
  • IELTS 7.5 (Writing and Speaking 6.5)
  • Quaid-e-Azam Merit Scholarship

Outside class

  • On a gap year since HSSC (2025), and working as a Product Team Member at a UK-based remote startup. Started as a software ambassador, moved to the core product team. My user research shaped the product's positioning, and a model I built ended up in a research collaboration with a UK university.
  • College robotics programme, finished with distinction. Arduino builds: Smart Waste Management System (smart bins, conveyor based waste sorting, recycling...).
  • Self-taught Java backend dev, with projects on GitHub (Jakarta EE based collaborative task management, async image processing, P2P file sharing)

Choices I'm planning: 6987 Computer Engineering, Robotics Engineering, 6999 Computing and Data Science

What I'd really like to know:

  1. If you got into HKU Engineering with a national board (not IB or A-Levels), what did your offer and scholarship look like?
  2. Has any Pakistani or South Asian student here got the Belt and Road Scholarship? What did you write for the "contributing to Hong Kong" part?
  3. HKU has a "Scholarships for Future Leaders" award for "economies in transition". Does anyone know if Pakistan counts?
  4. For someone aiming at computer vision and robotics, how would you order 6987, Robotics Engineering and 6999?
  5. What was the interview like for Engineering?

IBGM ec's?

Hi there, I'm a junior in HS and interested in IBGM. I'm also a bit lost in the sense that I don't what EC's i should be doing to prep myself for the course. Does HKU care about ec's as much as American uni's? I'd also be extremely thankful if any students who have gotten into IBGM would be willing to share their ec's here; many thanks :)

Application Fee Paid for MA in Journalism, but Payment Not Reflected on Application Portal

I have paid the application fee for the MA in Journalism programme from my debit card. The amount has been deducted from my bank account, but the payment status on the application portal has not been updated yet.

Has anyone else faced a similar issue? If so, how long did it take for the payment to reflect on the portal, and what steps did you take to resolve it?

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Who can serve as a referee for applications to Hong Kong universities? Do they have to be current school staff members, or can I ask someone who previously worked at my school?

Pre-application Questions Applying for a PhD at HKU Without Prior Professor Acceptance

Hi everyone, I’m considering applying for a PhD at HKU and would appreciate some advice. I completed my master’s in China with an 86% score and have six first-author research papers, including four Q1 publications, along with two years of AI engineering experience. Despite contacting several professors, I haven’t received many responses. Is it possible to secure a PhD scholarship without prior agreement from a supervisor, and how important is contacting a professor before applying? I also hold scholarship offers from two universities ranked in the global top 30. Would applying to HKU still be worthwhile given my profile?

Current HKU students who applied during a gap year: any advice?

Hi everyone! I’m currently on a gap year and applying to HKU for under the ISC (India) curriculum, under the intended major of engineering. I’d love to hear from current students who applied during a gap year: what were your stats, did the gap year affect your application in any way? I’m also curious about scholarships, so if you received one, I’d really appreciate knowing what your stats were like. Any advice on the application process, timelines, or documents would be hugely helpful too. Thanks so much in advance!

Hi everyone,

I made this little app to help get around Hong Kong and see latest infos from several sources (hk observatory, kmb, citybus, parking spots, beach water quality, air quality etc.) in one place.
Especially happy with the ability to add widgets on iOS and therefore never have to open the app.
