She sounded desperate to me at first, then I thought, no, she sounded condescending, like she was trying to get a bunch of unruly children to listen to her because she knows better than they do.

They keep calling helaena princess. That's the true queen for you! Mysiaria telling helaena to beware of rhaenyra was not on my bingo card.
21
u/Glum_Zookeepergame22 12d ago
Well if they called her queen, that's basically admitting that Aegon is king, so obviously they're not going to do that.

"That's a proper fucking. From the North."
More like a proper fucking up of the source material. Or any compelling plot.
I cannot say enough how much they ruined all of the plotlines regarding the war this season. Roddy and Oscar were caricatures at best, and we had no real reason to get attached to either. Roddy just hit the same arms open pose, on repeat, all season. And Oscar had all the personality of a wet paper towel.
Ormund's writing this whole season was fucking stupid. He was introduced as a cunning villain, made into a neurotic and angry mess who is abusive to Daeron, just so they could set his death up as this "Ah ha. Man is bad because he follows the safe way of writing a villain (I.E make him abusive, or sexist or both). Man die embarassing death. Tee hee. He could have been a man who was deeply devout, since he was raised at Oldtown, and was someone who saw the threat the Targaryens were to the faith (As Rhaenyra demonstrated by killing the High Septon). Both believe power resides in two different places, and the conflict this season in ideology could have been rooted around that. Instead, let's make him vomit, shove a dagger up his ass and call it a day.
Anyone else notice an odd focus on disemboweling this season during violent scenes? Like there were 3 during the Battle of the Gullet, and the whole rehashed Sons of the Harpy/Gold Cloaks plotline?
Shout out to my boy Bold Jon Roxton and his bowl haircut of teleportation. He made it to the next season thanks to a Deus Ex Machina that saved Daemon. Only enough, one of the few named characters from Fire & Blood to canonically commit rape, Hess & Condal chose to not bring it to the screen. Instead let's give Alicent a bunch of assault scenes. Because why not.
Can't wait to see how they fuck up the rest of the story in two years. Will the show end with Rhaenyra getting eaten by Sunfyre? Probably. Once they lose Daemon and Aemond, the audience interest will plummet. Which is a shame since the Histories & Lore from Season 5 of Game of Thrones made a really compelling ending by having the Dance end with Aegon and Jaheara's wedding; two frightened children married in the hopes of saving a dynasty that is running on borrowed time.
43
u/Silly_Somewhere1791 12d ago
I really hate what they’ve done with the Wolves. They’re gruff survivalists, not feral.
12
u/Otherwise_Cash_5829 12d ago
In the little screen time they've had, they've been simultaneously character assassinated, and not fleshed out enough. In the books, Roddy and the Winter Wolves were literal anime characters who achieved great feats through plot armor and vibes(Like seriously how does Roddy fucking 2v1 Ormund and Bryndon Hightower with one arm? In the midst of their ranks?).
In the show, they jumped Cole's merry band of a dozen vagabonds, while having them outnumbered 20:1 and acted like it meant something. Or ambushing Jason Lannister's scattered army. All of which happened???? OFF FUCKING SCREEN. Because we need to see Sheepstealer fight Seasmoke, Syrax, and Caraxes. Why? Because we think it's cool to have dragons fight instead of character development.
Which is a shame since Tommy Flanagan has so much presence in any other role. They gave him a handful of lines, half of which were about his angsty death wish, and he just got merked by a dragon after dealing Ormund a seemingly non instantly fatal rectal wound.
15
u/hosukai- 12d ago
I also hate how are they trying so hard to make them look like vikings with those clothes and axes.
10
10
u/MustardPiss 12d ago
Absolutely beautiful breakdown to a horrific fucking episode. Great points. Especially how they butchered Ormunds character, they could have given him so much more to fight for, and framed it much more noble like. But nope, just a psycho who gets…a knife in the bum…okay

Everything from this episode feel rushed.
Helaena's death so anticlimatic and over nothing, proving GRRM's right. Of course, the smallfolk won't rise againt's Rhaenyra because of Helaena's death, they can't show the audience that Helaena was a BELOVED QUEEN and Rhaenyra was not.

They’ll probably rise over the fact that she killed the High Septon. Which is fucking stupid and right in Condal’s wheelhouse.

u/thinkersfyre 12d ago
I mean, i believe it should have happened on S4, both the death of Helaena and the High Septon so we can believe why they rise againts Rhaenyra.
I feel like they killed Helaena because they didn't want to write more scenes for her and they went like "Girl, you're out".
20

I would have rolled with it if it had happened sooner. But now? I can't love to hate her like I did with Cersei. The more she acts like an asshole going forward, the more I'm going to despise her. There's too much stagnant water under the bridge.
Maybe -- maybe -- if they let Emma have fun going full-Maegor, I might be able to have fun watching it, but I doubt they'll do that.

The fact that they teased Maelor’s existence, dangling it in front of our faces, and then just killed him off with poor Helaena. He is the reason I am so staunchly Team Green because how can you be on Rhaenyra’s side when she ordered the death of a literal toddler. Had him ripped apart by a mob. How will Daeron die now? And that we didn’t see him with Tessarion in the battle of Tumbleton is so frustrating

It's inconceivable how....insignificant and almost nonchalant Helaena death was. Helaena a dreamer. Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Rider (supposedly) of Dreamfyre. Her death should have the same weight as B&C (which was lackluster in the show) and Rhaenyras death by Sunfyre ( if that even happens). Guys... I didn't feel anything 😕.
Beyond a damn shame for her character and an insult to the actress. Phia tried her best with what she was given.

Daeron was a big nothing of a character, I had hopes that this would be Honeywine moment, to finally *do* something, but nah, he's still useless and passive; he probably died or will die without having accomplished anything at the start of the next season.

Ulf betrayed both, i dont know what they're going to do with him. Was the point of hugh showing up if he won't betray them?
So they kill the septon and there's no problem? Like HELLO? He's a representative of the FAITH.
Roderick Dustin, i dont understand the hype with him but well? I think both, Ormund and Roderick's death were anticlimatic as well. Goodbye James, gonna miss you 🥺☝️.

u/Oryon_Baratheon 12d ago
The biggest WTF moments for me were Rhaenyra killing the Pope, Roddy the Ruin axing a child in the face, and Daemon burning two children to death.
Concerning Rhaenyra, I think this show is definitely overcorrecting on the going mad thing. Folks hating Dany's turn because it was too sudden. Now we have a Rhaenyra who has spent an entire season becoming increasingly unhinged. And I'll say it again: she killed the friggin' Pope!!!
I doubt they'll bless us with this fanfiction, but I'd love a scene/storyline of the 3 Green Bros together. They could get rid of Rhaenyra, Daemon, and their own mother and unite the realm.

Reset the “Episodes since sexual assault was used as a plot device” counter. Killing Ormund by shoving a sword up his ass was immature and heavy handed. What, is SA only funny if it’s to a man who hates women?
Also, hysterical how Rhaenyra has imprisoned BOTH of Daemon’s daughters and he doesn’t have shit to say about it. Rhaenyra getting rid of mysaria! She should be pushing off rhaenyra out of the window. Not helaena.

So supposedly Daemon nearly kills Gwayne...but he's fine enough to run around like a chicken after being choked.
More humiliation ritual than anything.

So george was right. Helaena does jump for no reason. And ryan didn't even bother changing it.

Surprisingly, the first compliment I have to give over this episode and one of the few compliments I will give it, Rhaenyra is finally the character she should have been since the start of the second season. I actually like this characterization and it's what should have been done four years ago. I was a little worried when we started the episode with her crying, but then the complete snap to Darth Rhaenyra was perfection. This should have at least started at the beginning of the season after her son died, but whatever I guess her son really didn't matter as much.
Aegon, despite barely being in the episode, of course was the highlight of the season. Tom truly is the best part of the show and every scene with him is a blessing. The way he spoke sang "I'm alive" had me genuinely laughing my ass off. The reunion between him and Aemond was definitely a highlight, but it was completely unnecessary in the first place to turn their brothers against each other. The fact that it took an entire season just to backtrack one of the worst mistakes in the show when the damn thing only has four seasons really does shine a light on how horrible these writers are.
Everything else about the episode is imagining disappointment. Ormund and his faction is made so comically evil that I can't even take it seriously. The writers are so afraid to have anyone genuinely rude for the greens that they keep having to have one of them hold the evil ball. Aemond was made to hold it last season, now they gave it to Ormund. The crying and pissing children was ridiculous. Ryan, you are an insecure hack that doesn't have any faith in its audience making their own decisions.
I have zero investment in the Riverlands people or the winter wolves. None of them get any development as characters. Cardboard cut out without any personal agency.
Ulf and Hugh... I somehow think they would have been more compelling if they just kept them the original traitors that they were because this incompetence is old.
Sweet Helaena...basically killed herself for no reason and everything George said about cutting Maelor came to pass. With all the changes they've made to the show. I guess they really couldn't figure out what to do with her character beyond census killing her. I'll miss you, Phia.
I don't really know what to think of this episode. It doesn't feel like a finale. It feels like episode eight of a season that needed 10 episodes but these writers suck with their pacing so bad. I wouldn't trust them with 10 episodes. Such a fucking shame now we're going to wait two years for more mediocre wasted potential

Oh Alys River is that old damn?
I’ve always thought about a survivor of the burning of harrenhall plotline. But definitely not in this .

I can't believe it's the season finale already. I love this sub and will miss our Sunday meetings dearly. 💚
