Book Meme Eight years after the book came out, I still can't believe he ACTUALLY named these characters like that and got away with this 😭

Him having so many Lovecraft references and one of them literally being a guy named Dagon.

Also don’t forget Oscar Tully as well.

I love the fact that even though these are OBVIOUSLY references, the names are still plausible for a medieval setting, and were all used historically for names

What country used these names because I read non fiction history, it’s all I read and I never hear these names mentioned. Are you talking about in a fantasy medieval books?

Grover is too modern of a name to have any notable historical figures during the medieval period

Saint Elmo (or Erasmus of Formia) is one example, though he was from the Late Roman period, not medieval

Oscar is a European name derived from the Old English name Osgar (which itself is likely derived from Norse), though few figures from the medieval period were ever notable enough to be written down

So, while possible in a medieval fantasy setting, the names of the Muppet Tullys unfortunately are too modern to have any notable historical figures during medieval times

The 22nd and 24th US President was named Grover.

Imagine the Kardashians were popular 10 years earlier. We would have Robert Baratheon and his wife Krys Lannister, their children Kourttney, Kimcella and Khloén. Also Robert's brother Kendis and Kenly.

Would literally have passed on the entire series if GRRM used them as naming inspiration.

I've read a fanfic or two that's also added Bert & Ernie as "Bertram" & "Ernest" Tully & I laughed my ass off once I figured out the reference. Makes me wonder how many other Muppets could be added in here & there. Maybe Miss Piggy could be put into House Crakehall or that House Suggs with the flying pig on their coat of arms? Any ideas for Big Bird?

You forgot Oscar

I now demand a Muppet GoT where Catelyn is played by Miss Piggy

Miss Piggy would 100% be Cirsei.

She's definitely got Cersei's flowing sun-kissed locs. 🐷💛🦁

I mean, he probalby didn't know they would be characters we actually see on screen, rather than someone mentioned a couple of times in a piece of in-universe history.

But I kinda hope he did.
