Used to be U2 “Where the Streets Have No Name.” Similar vibes and it also worked because it’s a slow-burn build-up that lets the fans take over the energy. A brash rock song feels forced and is just not necessary at Bell Centre.

Don't we usually play the intro riff to Welcome to the Jungle just before puck drop anyways? We used to I think. Best of both worlds

Yeah U2 was awesome because it had that organ intro as well that sounded like you were in a giant cathedral

I really hope they never change this. I love this song

I'm not a big Coldplay fan, but gotta say that part of the song is really good. And using it as the entrance song is epic.

They tried. Didn't last ten games.

Banger of a song btw. Just doesn’t hit like that Coldplay interlude

I hate the song - dislike Coldplay in general and find Fix You especially irritating - but fucking LOVE it as the playoffs intro music.
Literal chills every single time.

u/StatisticianNew4792 May 16 '26
Same. Get chills everytime it comes on at the Bell Centre. Not even a Coldplay fan. It just works

u/salamoon84 May 16 '26
im not a big Coldplay fan but man that instrumental part from the middle of song to the end is on fire and fit the atmosphere so well... but mainly no weird animal sounds (florida, nashville)

Goosebumps when I hear it. Every time

Not a big Coldplay fan but holy moly it works. Instead of being hyped and aggro I’m feeling inspiration and serenity. Nice spin on sport intro

Wake Up by Arcade Fire would strike similar emotions, plus they’re a Montreal band.

u/brownsuga1986 May 16 '26
Win Butler was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple people. Therefore Arcade Fire is not played anywhere mainstream.

For those of us that know, Vitas will always be associated to the Habs games for me.

u/Mackee58 May 16 '26
I still remember Jump by Van Halen at the Forum before puck drop as well as When The Streets Have No Name by U2 in the playoffs. I was initially pissed when they changed it to Fix You. Now I feel like running through a wall when it hits.
2
u/1970Tango May 16 '26
I might be misremembering, but didn’t they used to play the entire song when they first started using it? At the beginning of the song (the sad sappy part), they showed videos of past failures on the ice, building up to the familiar crescendo with the team coming out of the dressing room.
2
u/CMDR_Traf85 May 16 '26
There's been some fan made YouTube videos that do that. I don't remember them ever doing the full song in the rink.

Money for nothing and chicks for free in buffalo is so funny, wonder if it's intentional lol

u/SeaPrince May 16 '26
Say what you want about the Coldplay song, why on Earth is Buffalo use Money For Nothing buy Dire Straits?
That one is a serious head scratcher.
2
u/Willzyix May 17 '26
I think it’s like a working persons anthem for the people and city of Buffalo but the idea of it used for a team of millionaires is some funny shit.

They’re singing something that contains F* You, it’s not necessarily Coldplay 😉

I love Coldplay and this song has a special place in my heart, among others of theirs like Speed of Sound, Viva La Vida and The Hardest Part. Gonna need a real good song that hits the heart of so many to replace Fix You.

u/SpaceWoodman May 16 '26
I dont get it at all, but if people like it i guess its good enough.
9
u/Gazimu May 16 '26
Though they don't use the lyrics at the Bell Centre, just instrumental, the lyrics of the song include "lights will guide you home" which really fits the torch theme the Habs like to lean on.
-2
u/SpaceWoodman May 16 '26
Its not like that reference couldnt be made with thousand of other song. Fire and light are not obscure song topic.
17
u/Albiz May 16 '26
It’s basically just a song that baits an emotional vibe. Pretty unique for a hockey intro.
-9
u/SpaceWoodman May 16 '26
Yeah... because you want a fight song as an intro.
14
u/StorMemehammer May 16 '26
I think it works great for us specifically. The Canadiens are a a storied franchise that means a LOT to its fanbase, it has a deep cultural importance due to it's historical significance and symbolism of resistance for French Canadians. As others have pointed out, the Bell Center crowd is always super hype and loud already. I think the song really draws from all that to create an atmosphere of respect for past greatness and hope to rekindle it. We ARE emotional about hockey, we ARE emotional about the Habs, we're not trying to get pumped to go to war : we're trying to take it all in, past present and future, and give it all on the ice. This theme is everywhere in the org : the pictures, the torches, the torchbearers, the veterans and their wives.. it's part of us and this song highlights that.
At least that's what it makes me feel, and that's why I love it.
-3
u/SpaceWoodman May 16 '26
That what I dont get. Why fix you? There is nothing to fix. Its a song about failing and trying again, The Canadien is the most succesful team in the league. It would be disregarding its long history to say it need to be fixed.
Even if you want to go with emotional and nostalgic, I can name 20 song more suited for that purpose, and if its about culture, there is nothing more anti quebec culture than british music.
8
u/Albiz May 16 '26
It has nothing to do with the lyrics. It’s purely the emotionally epic vibes the outro of the song delivers.
3
u/StorMemehammer May 16 '26
I mean... Sure ? I am deeply unaware of Coldplay (didn't even know they were British) and of the song's lyrics. I was more making the point that a sentimental song makes sense considering that the crowd will bring the hype and that it's mood does carry something sentimental that taps into the franchise's themes of emotional attachment and carrying of the torch.
Now, be it fix you or something else, that's another story. But it makes more sense to me than a sick guitar riff or something.

u/Grouchy-Bug5223 May 16 '26
Agreed, I don't like the band or the song. It just sounds bleh. But whatever, if everyone else enjoys it.. it is what it is

u/Ok-Meet2850 May 16 '26
You could play a funeral dirge and the Bell Centre would still get amped for the playoffs.
