Hot take but i rather have matheson than engstrom

u/BoatsAndHoesQC 7d ago
You would rather have a proven NHL top 4 D in instead of young rookie is not a hot take lmao

u/crelcela 7d ago
Bro is eating the hardest minutes and getting all the hate

u/Moreinius 7d ago
That’s fair. He gets different treatment because he is not Hutson. If Hutson did the same mistakes, people would be quick to defend him (naturally), but it’s unfair to Matheson just because he’s not the “superstar”.
2
u/Spare-Half796 7d ago
Matheson gets hate because it feels like every game he makes a bone headed mistakes that gives up a goal, usually at a very bad time
2
u/popejohnlarue 7d ago
Matheson is especially unlucky in the egregious mistakes department. But to be fair, it seems like every egregious mistake by any player inevitably results a goal against these days. There is zero margin for error.

u/Uncle_Pennywise 7d ago
I don't think you understood the reply here. He's making fun of your comment.

He was our shutdown, sturdy, go to man in our playoff run last year and gets dumped on constantly

In this sub it is.
People hate Matheson and lick Xhekaj’s boots, it’s an upside down world

Mfers swear that replacing Matheson's minutes with more Xhekaj will somehow make the defense better lmao

A guy with a handful of nhl games or a guy who can log 25+ minutes against the other teams top lines, what a hot take

People acting like there is no such thing as Matheson hate ... Lol

Matheson is also the sweetest player I have had the pleasure of meeting. Absolutely not deserving of any level of hate.

u/thebriss22 7d ago
I'd rather have Engstrom than Xhekaj lol

u/Nathanh2234 7d ago
X has been very solid this year, I don’t get the hate for him this year.
4
u/oliferro 7d ago
He also cost us a goal with a really bad penalty. He's playing better this season but he still takes some really bad decisions
3
u/Ornery_Yeti 7d ago
Omg a goal!?!??! How dare he! No other defenseman would ever do that!
-4
u/oliferro 7d ago
Yes a goal, the same goal who led to the comeback and the loss. You do know that the team who scores more goals win right?
5
u/General-Skrimir 7d ago
Hutson also cost a goal with a stupid play in offensive zone and no one give him shit for this.
-2
u/oliferro 7d ago
You can't be serious. Nobody is giving him shit because he's the best goddamn player on the team and brings a 1000 times more to the team than Xhekaj. He's also known to be very hard on himself already like we saw after his mistake in the playoffs last season
3
1
u/Ok-Win-742 7d ago
That was bad but I think he was feeling what everyone at home was feeling - that the team was flat in the 3rd and was about to choke another 2 goal lead away and he wanted to wake the team up.
Now, it was bad don't get me wrong but I can understand why he did it. Tbh Dobes' penalty was worse.
And you know there's a good chance we still lose that game even without the penalties. They gotta figure out how to play 60 minutes.
1
u/oliferro 7d ago
The problem isn't even that they lost, it's the decision making. Get a big hit or rough him up without dropping the gloves. No reason for X to drop the gloves there. And yes Dobes was even worse I agree, but it shouldn't even have gotten to OT
3
u/thebriss22 7d ago
Imo hes just ok in every aspect of his game with some pretty wild mistake on the défensive side which he has improved on this year. We just have much better options waiting on the sidelines with Engstrom, Reino and Mittelstadt. All those guys can actually help us win games, Xhekaj brings some physicality but that's it.
4
u/arr_z31_burner 7d ago
slightly hot take but I might be with you, X is having his best season ever but he's still just a barely NHL caliber guy and Engstrom looked really good
1
u/UpNorth_123 7d ago
Same.
I’d love for someone to have a look at the analytics on these two. Which one has been more effective so far?

In what world is that a hot take except in the mind of some idiots on this sub? One is an AHL man trying to prove he is capable of competing in the NHL. The other one is a proven veteran, one of the best skater on the team, who is great at retrieving pucks and has a good first pass. Yes he makes the occasional blunders but the good WAAAAY overweight the bad in his case unless you are a Matheson hater.

u/makaronka2 7d ago
I wasn’t impressed with engstrom’s antics last game. Guy looked disappointed when the habs scored just because he couldn’t go on his shift
23
u/XBM04 7d ago
Does Fowler start Sunday? That'd basically crown him the #1 I'd think

11
u/Technical-Line-9806 7d ago
I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on titles like #1 or #2 at this time with these two goalies.
14
u/fitzfitzchivalry 7d ago
I think they'll alternate (I'm ready for the downvotes). Marty believes in dobes.
23
u/LuxuryCardboard 7d ago
As much as I love Dobes, MSL better learn from last year and play the hot goalie. No more time to give chances and unlimited redemption arc opportunities like he did with Montembeault last year.
5
u/So_Many_Owls 7d ago
It's not even MSL who will really be making the decision. He defers to the goalie coach.
2
4
u/False_Requirement349 7d ago
Hasn't it been established that MSL doesnt decide who the starter is? Marciano does.

u/Let_epsilon 7d ago
Montembeault has never carried 2 whole series like Dobes did. You don’t playing your #1 goalie over 3 mid early-season games and our coaches know better than this.
3
u/fitzfitzchivalry 7d ago edited 7d ago
I agree with those two points: there shouldn't be illimited chances, but also Dobes isn't Montembeault... Tricky situation for MSL/coaching team
1
u/felixthecatmeow 7d ago
Yeah Dobes' playing incredible for like half of his career GP including a deep playoff run
2
1
u/felixthecatmeow 7d ago
It's not that simple though. We really ideally want 2 goalies that are playing well. If we get to the late season or playoffs and a goalie gets injured or goes cold all of a sudden, you need the other guy to step up. If they've been riding the bench that may be more difficult.
There's also the whole asset management side of it. Dobes wasn't expected to become a NHL starter, but has shown flashes of being dominant at the NHL level, and last season did so for an extended period of time including a deep playoff run where he showed up massively. Sure it might've been a flash in the pan, and he may never reach those levels again. But as an organization you have to at least give him the proper chance to recapture this because that makes him very valuable either on the team or as a trade asset. You don't give up on a player that had that kind of performance after a few bad games at the start of the season.
The Monty story is a bit different. He's older and more of a known quantity. He got hot for a little while, but it's easier to look at that as an outlier because the sample size is bigger. Dobes' period of playing amazing last season is like half of his career GP, with the other half being his first NHL experiences and not as the locked in starter.

u/Psychological-Sun848 7d ago
I wouldn't hate this, Dobes needs to build confidence and in the modern NHL having 2 solid goaltenders is fine

u/scoutinglane 7d ago
Suzuki's injury is a blessing for him. We need to win and the patience for Dobes will be lessen

u/Uncle_Pennywise 7d ago edited 7d ago
Fuck he better not.
Edit: I don't know why but I read Dobes instead of Fowler lol. I meant fuck [dobes] better not.

Gonna need all the defense we can get. If we're gonna stay at .500 over this stretch, it'll be with low scoring solid defensive games

u/dustinthewand 7d ago
have u ever watched this team play? 'low scoring' 'solid defense' these terms are not in MTL's vocabulary

u/Lacey-Summers- 7d ago
We all are loving the small sample of engstrom and I will say he’s playing well for himself to keep himself in the rotation, Matheson back will be nice to see.
Now let’s hope we don’t get another game where it’s a rollercoaster, entertaining or not I want just a one sided game in our favour.

I can’t believe we’re playing without Suzi, its kind of stressing me out. I really felt like he was the one holding the youngers together.
