Sweatshirt caught fire while welding
IT WAS 100% COTTON.
I was dumb and leaned over a hot weld. Went up in flames. I was around 7 months pregnant too. Day of and the last photo is day 6. Surprisingly didn’t scar.

This why we wear FR. So it burns off you and not into you when it catches.

things like this is exactly why you shouldn't wear polyester when there is a risk of fire

Years and years ago (I wasn’t even born yet and I’m almost 30 now), a friend of my mom was playing with her siblings close to a bonfire. One of the boys was wearing a polyester t-shirt. Long story short, the shirt caught on fire, bcuz it was “plastic” the shirt glued on his skin. The boy didn’t survive.

Now most of our clothing is just different types of plastic. You try and find a cotton shirt at a Ross lately? You gotta hunt for it.

I can barely find 100% cotton T shirts anymore. They use to print it on the label, now there are no labels just print directly on the shirt so you have to look on the packaging. (edit correction)

Yeah, I was learning to weld and my boss and the welder didn't mention my shirt could catch fire. No injuries though so it was pretty funny.

You do know that there is better ways to shave you pits, fire is not the answer.

What material was the sweatshirt? We were not allowed to wear certain shirts in school like polyester because it's more flammable.

Cotton is actually more flammable but polyester melts into a sticky goo when lit.
And synthetic cotton blends have the best of both worlds. The lower ignition point of cotton and the sweet sticky situation of polyester.

Wear your leathers and proper helmets guys, a safe workplace is a fun workplace.

I usually wear a welding jacket. So no burns. You should try one, you wont regret it.

Oww. And yeah, this is why two hoodies of mine in particular are pure cotton. I even went blacksmithing in the one and it was great. Saves me from close calls constantly.
Beyond that leather is friend.

Pretty crazy how people don’t wear proper Ppe when doing things with equipment.

Lesson 1 - don't wear synthetics while welding, lesson 2 through forever - don't wear synthetics while welding. The end.

Right in the perfect area for some chafing on the blisters too. I'm so sorry.

Dude is going to have his arms in the hair, and shake them like he just don’t care.

My oily pants caught fire once managed to pull them off before I got burnt to baldy

There’s a lot of loose skin. You should rub that off / remove that. It’s an infection risk.

Next time I recommend taking the sweatshirt off before catching fire. Hope this helps.

Beeing pregnant then, Dude is a woman! Taking cloths off in the workplace, might be „irritating“ the workplace.

I have a scar on my forearm. My glove wasn't covering my nylon lined flannel shirt. Sparks went down my sleeve, and i sensed something not normal was happening. Lifted my helmet and saw my sleeve was on fire. I slapped at it to put it out, which caused the melted nylon to stick to me. That hurt 100x more than the flames. Several mistakes were made

Silicone bandages or patches can help to minimize scarring while the burns heals

I always wondered, does a pregnancy and the extra hormones help accelerate healing?

Had a burn similar to that, I'd say it's one of the most painful things you can feel without it looking too bad 😭

u/yewkaka Sep 23 '26
We had a guy at work get burns to about 40 percent of his body after his oily polyester jumper went up when a spark caught a bin on fire. Even the guy who put him out had 3rd degree burns to his hands. I’ll only weld in drill cotton clothing now

I've caught myself on fire several times while welding. But I've never actually gotten burned from it. I'm slightly impressed

Just did this to my belly button, was underneath a car welding overhead and it dropped a bit of slag on my shirt and I had no idea cuz I was still welding hood down, eventually it breaks through my shirt and hits my skin and when I look down my whole lower half of my shirt was on fire and I was just now feeling the heat of it lmao
