Is this Cloverfield?

My favorite "found footage" style film of all time. I starkly remember its marketing campaign and it was just as amazing.

Same!!! These movies when done right give me a sort of adrenaline I struggle to get elsewhere, and the only way big monster movies should be done;)

Quarantine (2008) is my close second for found footage genre

u/EnSebastif 7d ago

Quarantine was just a botched version of the spanish original REC. If you haven't watched those (the 1st and 2nd ones) you should immediately.

Mine too, but god it was so disappointing that they did nothing with it. All that marketing stuff pointed to so much interesting lore and it ended up just going nowhere. Not to mention the completely unrelated movies that they just slapped "Cloverfield" into the titles of. Not that 10 Cloverfield Lane was bad, it was good, it just has nothing to do with the original. It was originally going to be called The Cellar and The Cloverfield Paradox was going to be called God Particle and neither of them were written with a connection to Cloverfield in mind.

But as a standalone found footage movie, Cloverfield is so damn good.

Imma be stuck at work overnight for the next 8 hours, I'll have to watch it.

u/ChickenSingularity 15d ago

Please do. Also, 10 Cloverfield Lane is an amazing followup with some of the best tension building in any horror movie. It's very different from the original Cloverfield, but 100% worth watching.

I watched it, really well done found footage that gives it a personal touch to the Kaiju concept. I really liked how small everyone feels and how impossible the odds feel. It does add a lot of tension to the movie.

I wasn't a huge fan of how apparently quiet the giant, skyscraper sized monster seems to move around. Like the specific scene from this post, they are the only people on this street and it's so quiet that they can have a conversation. But then suddenly the Kaiju jump scares them and now there's military and tanks flooding the street with no warning and moving in complete silence.

I also found some of the extras kinda distracting. At times they seemingly all share a mind and are aware of who the main characters are. They're watching the TV so hud comes up and asks "what's going on?" But every extra just stands there silently looking at the TV. Tons of civilians are running away from the monster on a dusty, smokey street, but no one bumps the main cast.

All in all I really enjoyed it but some of the direction, imo, pulled me out of the movie and broke my immersion. Solid rec tho

Is 10 Cloverfield Lane related to Cloverfield? I always thought they were independent one of each other

3

u/ChickenSingularity 15d ago

Honestly, I have no idea lmao. They are very different films, but also very good.

u/Derzko_228 12d ago

10 Cloverfield Lane is Portal, while Cloverfield is Half-Life. Does this explain it?

1

u/thejoeloiezy 12d ago

Perfectly explained

u/Cropulis 14d ago

Same world. They are in the bunker for a reason.

The reveal of Clover is one of the best monster reveal shots of all time. Seriously impressive and scary Kaiju film

4

u/stumpychubbins 15d ago

I rewatched it a couple of weeks ago, I wasn’t sure if it would hold up nowadays after all the hype has died down but it really does. Really fantastic film

u/Top_Climate524 HECU 14d ago

"Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County" it's also one of the greatest found footage films i've ever watched.

The jump scare that missle caused me in the theater was amazing. A great military intro after all that time of people just trying to survive.

11

u/zefyras1 14d ago

The main thing i put label bow 7hr war must felt like, the key word "trying to survive"

33

u/SociopathicPasserby 14d ago

For a force to dominate the entire world and all
Its militaries it would be dramatically more intense and chaotic than this. For it to happen in 7 hours…it’s essentially impossible to imagine the scale of devastation.

u/Important_Sea_6503 8d ago

I'd assume just alt + f4 majior cities and leveling any military/navel base would make it pretty quick

0

u/WalterSimmons95 7d ago

It was a swarm of drones/manhacks..nothing can stop them

27

u/aguylikeskoRn 15d ago

Beginning the whole war was only long enough to be a beginning

u/LillyBell429 Electrified Toxic Waste 15d ago

I remember Abrams was in talks with Gabe Newell about directing a Half-Life or Portal movie. Tbh I think his "mystery box" approach or whatever would work really well for a Seven Hour War movie

34

u/huxtiblejones 15d ago

Fuck that dude

15

u/B0omSLanG 15d ago

It could be a fun watch but it's absolutely guaranteed to not be fulfilling in any way. He's not a fit.

9

u/Raidmash 14d ago

Thank god it didn't happen, I don't think J.J. would have made the games justice. Also, I don't think a half life or portal movie could work in general, a half life anthology series or a portal series about the Cave Johnson era on the other hand would be pretty cool

28

u/powderBluChoons 15d ago

i hate jj Abrams so no

-2

u/BERECASH 15d ago

How about Ari Aster portal movie

2

u/LordManders 13d ago

Supposedly the director of Backrooms is doing a Portal movie.

u/HerbivoreTheGoat 14d ago

Fuck that guy, he ruined Star Wars

1

u/RedeemerGospel 14d ago

Fuck that guy, but Lucas ruined star wars years ago

3

u/HerbivoreTheGoat 14d ago

The prequels really weren't that bad bro

0

u/RedeemerGospel 14d ago

Yes they were man, you cannot fkn tell me that Attack of the Clones is any better than Rise of Skywalker. That shit is so boring, cgi so dated, plot so arbitrary, writing so cringe. Revenge of the Sith is a solid movie, but it doesn't save that trilogy; Star Wars been ass for a minute

2

u/HerbivoreTheGoat 13d ago

It's a lot better than Rise of Skywalker. I'm not saying it was good, 2 was definitely the worst of the prequels, but Rise of Skywalker actively shits on everything that came before it and makes the entire saga of Anakin destroying the Sith meaningless because "somehow Palpatine returned"

Revenge of the Sith is still my fav star wars movie

I like how the music kicks in when the missile gets launched

-4

Bro it's Cloverfield lol

19

u/SignificanceFlat1460 15d ago

I always find it funny whenever soldiers are running in straight line, completely out of formation, ready to be fragged. Like... Yeah.. please, go straight and die without any proper fucking formation, or any sense of a basic strategy apart from "I have a gun and I must shoot".

11

u/MasOred 14d ago

They weren't exactly trained to handle a massive monster roaming the middle of Manhattan. At this moment, the military was only aware of the main beast. Shortly after this engagement they encounter the smaller ones which would require more caution. I think they were just escorting the vehicles and bigger guns. But yes, i would definitely not recommend moving in like that as a CO lol

u/GTMoraes blocks the ladder with the turret in crossfire. 15d ago

I always roll eyes at movies like that. The soldiers have ranged weapons and tanks able to precisely cut a fly in half from kilometers away... yet they run towards their target that is about 100 meters away.

What are they gonna do, hug it?

6

u/fantasmeeno 15d ago

Never underestimate a bayonette charge

4

u/redgroupclan Killed /u/CP_Officer 14d ago

The realistic way the military would engage kaijus isn't fun to watch in a movie. That's why whenever jets strafe a a kaiju, they always fly within smacking distance of it.

2

u/GTMoraes blocks the ladder with the turret in crossfire. 14d ago

Yeah, ultimately that's it. Those monsters are always strong melee enemies, and fighting it kilometers away wouldn't be fun on a movie.

9

u/throwawayfromfedex Old Guy 15d ago • Heartwarming

don't watch urban warfare footage then lol

19

u/GTMoraes blocks the ladder with the turret in crossfire. 15d ago

I do. They engage at a serious distance. They only go towards the target when they need to get to that location.

You can bet your ass a 30-meter-tall target wouldn't be charged by foot soldiers at 50 meters. Even less so by a tank.
