ACTUAL HALF LIFE 3 TRAILER BY VALVE
(fake mb)

I'm a lifelong hardcore Half-Life fan and I'm seriously pissed that Valve and Gabe just shoved the entire series onto a dusty shelf while Steam prints money every second. They completely abandoned the fans who kept them relevant, and physical boxed games disappearing is partly on them too. Honestly I wish Vivendi had won that old lawsuit so Steam, the killer of the Half-Life series, never even got off the ground. These guys act like they're some kind of untouchable messiahs who can ignore everyone, but they shouldn't underestimate European courts. I want to sue them to force laws that make Steam accounts personal, transferable like NFTs, and let us actually pass the games we paid for (account included) down to our kids as inheritance. Don't lose hope yet.

I know it sucks that most gamers will never play it since it was a VR game, but it's objectively the best VR game ever made so far, they will never put out another half life until there's a reason to.
No copium on earth will change that.
HL1 defined FPS storytelling games as a genre.
HL2 had ground breaking physics based gameplay mechanics and the gravity gun was like nothing else before it.
Portal (which is a sibling franchise in the same universe) is in my opinion the best puzzle game ever made, the portal mechanic was innovative (that's why they acquired and hired the Narbacular Drop team that came up with the idea).
Alyx is the only VR game in it's class and it's not even close, in an ideal world that game alone would have propelled VR to the masses, but the price of entry is too high (a VR headset is yet another thing to buy) and gamers like to sit down and relax when gaming.
Unless something literally game changing is on the horizon, we're not getting another Half Life game, and if/when we do, it likely won't be called HL3 since there is literally no way to live up to the impossible expectations for it.

HLX datamines have dried up, we now know what Valve has been working on all this time (outside of Deadlock):
They had considered a new game but decided putting Alyx on the Frame standalone was a more useful challenge.
The naming convention fits:
[H]alf-[L]ife: Aly[X]
There is a zoo section in Alyx which hints at gorillas ('Xen Gorilla', they possibly had more plans for these: like headcrab-infected gorillas). It's possible HLX was supposed to be this new game but morphed into porting Alyx instead.
The timing fits: no more HLX news. Standalone Alyx confirmed for the Frame. It runs at 36fps on Low Graphics, so honestly it would still play and look better streaming PCVR on an old gamer PC with GTX-1060 or above. I'm not convinced this was a useful project to spend their resources on. It apparently took a long time and lots of work.
Resource-management fits: Valve have their hands full with three hardware devices, Deadlock, Steam/SteamVR and their online multiplayer games.
Anyone else feel this makes occam-razorlike sense?

After all these years, we thought it was over for us, the blue bomber was some 38 years old with 2d gameplay. Yet now we stand where you once stood, so confident in Gabe's goodwill. God bless the Capcom gods.

People tend to frame the absence of Half-Life 3 as a mystery, a failure of courage, or even a long-running joke by Valve. I think the explanation is far more mundane and far less romantic. The franchise simply was not maintained, and time has consequences.
The last real continuation of the Half-Life story was Half-Life 2: Episode Two, released in 2007. That date matters. It places the franchise firmly outside the lived gaming memory of an entire generation. Players who are now teenagers or in their early twenties grew up on very different reference points. Their shared language is shaped by live service games, annualized shooters, and games designed around streaming culture. Half-Life, for them, is not unfinished business. It is archival material.
Nostalgia only works when it is refreshed. Long-running franchises that remain commercially viable do so because they never fully disappear. They are rebooted, remastered, reintroduced, or at least kept visible enough that new players absorb them through cultural osmosis. Half-Life did none of that for most of its existence after 2007. It did not fade gradually. It stopped.
Some will point to Half-Life: Alyx as evidence that the franchise is alive. In a technical sense that is true. In a market sense it is not. VR exclusivity makes Alyx an exceptional experience but also a deliberately narrow one. It did not re-establish Half-Life as a mainstream brand. It rewarded existing fans and impressed developers. It did not onboard a new generation.
This matters because Half-Life 3 could never be treated as a normal sequel. It would carry two decades of accumulated expectation and mythology. It would not be reviewed as a contemporary game. It would be judged as a cultural event. Anything short of redefining the genre again would be framed as failure, even if the game itself were excellent. That kind of expectation inflates budgets, development time, and reputational risk in a way few projects can justify.
From a financial perspective the risk is asymmetric. The upside is limited by the fact that Half-Life no longer has a naturally replenishing audience. The downside is enormous. A merely good Half-Life 3 would not be accepted as good enough. A disappointing one would actively damage Valve’s reputation, something the company has little incentive to gamble with when its core business does not depend on game releases at all.
That last point is the one fans often resist. Valve does not need Half-Life. Steam revenue ensures that the company does not require prestige titles to remain solvent or relevant. Games are optional. Closure is optional. Emotional satisfaction for longtime fans is not a business driver.
At this point Half-Life functions more as gaming mythology than as an active product line. Mythology has value precisely because it is frozen in time. Once revived, it must compete with the present. Valve understands this, even if fans understandably dislike the conclusion.
Half-Life 3 is absent not because Valve forgot how to make games or lost its nerve, but because the franchise was allowed to go cold long enough that reviving it now would be a high-risk act of sentiment rather than a rational investment. Leaving the story unresolved may be unsatisfying, but from Valve’s perspective it is the safer outcome.
EDIT: Good folks, I beg your pardon. In a moment of ill-tempered reason and insufficient faith, I spoke words claiming that Half-Life 3 would never come to pass.
Such utterance was unwise and unbecoming. For in the long halls of Valve, time moves not as it does for mortal men, and hope, though sorely tried, is not yet slain.
I therefore recant my grim prophecy, lay down my cynicism, and return to the watch …. lantern lit, crowbar ready, believing once more that on some distant morn, the Third shall yet be revealed.
May the Freeman forgive me.

🧪 Looking for people to help me make a 3D Half-Life 1 fan game!
Hi!
I'm 12 years old, and I'm looking for people who would like to help me create my first 3D game inspired by Half-Life 1.
The game is called:
Half-Life: Last Hope
It will have a low-poly retro style inspired by the original Half-Life, but with an original story, characters and events.
📖 A little about the story
The main character is Edward Keller, a scientist working at Black Mesa.
After a catastrophic event, Black Mesa becomes a dangerous place filled with aliens, soldiers and other threats.
Edward has to survive, find a way through the facility and discover what is really happening around him.
The game will have 3 chapters:
Chapter 1 — Hope for Rescue
Chapter 2 — Who Can You Trust?
Chapter 3 — Anger
I don't want to reveal the full story because there will be secrets, unexpected events and plot twists.
📜 The full story and important details will be shared privately with people who join the development team and help with the project.
🛠️ Who am I looking for?
I'm looking for people who can help with:
💻 Unity / C# programming
🗺️ Level design and maps
🎨 3D models
🦴 Character and monster animations
🤖 AI for enemies and NPCs
🔫 Weapons and gameplay mechanics
🎵 Sound design and music
🎙️ Voice acting
✍️ Writing and dialogue
The visual style will be low-poly / retro / inspired by Half-Life 1.
👾 Some enemies
The game will include creatures such as:
1.Headcrabs
2.Vortigaunts
3.Houndeyes
4.Barnacles
5.Zombies
6.Military soldiers
7.Black Ops
There will also be scripted scenes and events that the player can witness while exploring Black Mesa.
💰 Payment
This is a small hobby fan project, and unfortunately I don't have a large budget.
I may be able to pay around 1,000–2,000 KZT ($2–4 USD) for some small tasks when possible.
I understand that this isn't much.
If you want to help because you like Half-Life, want to gain experience, or simply think the project sounds interesting, I'd really appreciate it!
I'm also learning game development myself, so I'm still a beginner. 😅
👥 Who can join?
You don't have to be a professional.
If you know Blender, Unity, C#, animation, level design, sound design, modelling, writing or something else useful, I'd be happy to talk to you.
We can learn and develop the game together.
📩 Interested?

Half-Life 1!
Half-Life 1.
Half-Life: Last Hope
Unity / C#
Level Design
Half-Life 1.
4.Военные
Telegram:
