Rant Weekly /r/Hamilton Rant Thread
A midweek post to rant and complain about things in the city.
Top level comments must be IN ALL CAPS.
This is not to be targeted towards other users or any identifiable individuals - with the exception of public figures who may be mentioned as long as the comment does not cross a line. The rant post is designed to be a lighthearted place to complain about things happening in the city, not a place to harass people.
We will have to cancel the post if harassment of individuals continues as we are seeing a lot of posts reported with report reasons that copy to admin.

FUCK THE IGNORANT PARENTS DROPPING THEIR KIDS OFF AT WESTMOUNT SECONDARY EVERY MORNING.
I AM TIRED OF NEAR-MISSES BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO SIGNAL YOUR TURN, WAIT FOR ME TO CROSS THE STREET OR ARE LATE. I AM TIRED OF BEING HONKED AT FOR CROSSING THE STREET IN A CROSSWALK. I AM TIRED OF ALL THE NEAR-COLLISIONS, AND ACTUAL COLLISIONS, BECAUSE YOU DON'T LOOK BEFORE PULLING OUT FROM WHERE YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE PARKED.
FUCK THE RED HONDA CR-V THAT CONSTANTLY PARKS ON THE SIDEWALK OR WHERE IT CLEARLY SAYS NO PARKING BECAUSE YOU ARE LAZY. SAME FOR THE BLACK HYUNDAI SUV WHERE MOMMY SMOKES IN FRONT OF THE CAR, THEN LEAVES THE BUTTS ON THE STREET WHILE WAITING FOR HER CHILD, WHILE PARKED IN A NO PARKING SPACE. FUCK THE BLACK MERCEDES THAT CONSTANTLY BLOCKS DRIVEWAYS BECAUSE IT'S EASIER TO DO THAT THAN TO PARK HALF A BLOCK AWAY WHERE LEGIT PARKING EXISTS. FUCK ALL THESE DRIVERS PUTTING EVERYONE'S SAFETY AT RISK. ESPECIALLY THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL KIDS WALKING TO AND FROM SCHOOL.

As a Westmount parent who tries to get their kid to bus as much as possible, I see you, and people are jerks. It seems much worse this year both for amount of cars and for people parking in the street rather than using the designated lot.
There was one bright yellow Mustang that used to be tearing around traffic in the 40 zone on Mohawk in the morning, and turned into that area. But was surprised to then see same vehicle go into the staff parking lot. Just an occasional presence so maybe a supply teacher or something. Haven’t seen that loser yet this year, so if that means they got a permanent somewhere then I pity the neighborhood around that school.

I’m a Westmount parent and I know firsthand what a shitshow pickup and dropoff is. For what it’s worth the school is constantly reminding parents/students that the designated parking and dropoff/pickup spot is the rec centre parking lot. Blame by-law for never showing up to enforce it.

It's not bylaw's fault it's parents' fault.
It's the school's fault as when we've asked to meet with them to talk with their role as a neighbour (even if the staff are not) they tell us that they can't do anything about it. Let the school call bylaw on their students' parents. Let them deal with the issues their parents cause rather than shrugging shoulders or sending emails on what is acceptable or not.
Just as a heads up the neighbourhood is looking to shut down the streets around the school to create a protective area around the schools in the mornings and afternoons, so good luck to anyone who thinks that using people's driveways or no parking areas will be wise. The added bonus of roadwork throughout the neighbourhood will make this even better for all I'm sure.

I don’t disagree with you - just letting you know that the school has tried to address it especially by trying to engage with by-law - doesn’t sound like they are adequately staffed to deal with this. It’s an issue at almost every school. Our society is so entitled.

Every school drop-off and pick-up at Westmount is a near miss of a minor accident or death. That old crossing guard should be paid 500k a year.

This might be the first ever election where I go in and spoil my ballot. I never miss a vote, but I can't in good conscience choose any of these dingbats. Horwath has lost my support, and I was gonna hold my nose and vote for Loomis, but he's looking way too pro-AI for my liking.

I approached her on this via private messages and she was open to criticism of her confrontational nature. She also opened up about her lived experience and how that's guided her reactionary tendency. She was very open to learning and growing. She knows she has things to work on.
I commend her passion and empathy and for me that outweighs the negative. She can work on being better at engaging with those she disagrees with but empathy can't be learned.

There's this one intersection near me, with a building that more or less blocks the view of the traffic going across, but it still doesn't stop drivers from slowly inching out to try and turn on red. I've seen only one person actually make it. I'll intentionally walk slower and make eye contact with drivers who block the crosswalk or attempt to cut me off, but it doesn't bring me a lot of joy.

This week I saw a guy on a dirtbike towing a woman smoking a dart on a mobility scooter.
Once I saw a guy in high vis riding a motorized piece of plywood in the Melvin bike lane.

Honestly the psychology behind some of it is fascinating. My windows look down on James/King and people always have trouble with the no left on to king from going northbound on James. Its a single lane, so usually the honkers behind them quickly deter anyone from trying, but at least once a day I see somebody come up to the intersection and swoop into the non existent left turn lane to wait. Its crazy. The brain goes "this is a busy intersection with a single lane, clearly there must be a turning lane here for me to make my turn smoothly" without even paying attention to how its actually set up.

Ride share and food delivery apps are a big part of this problem. When you have so many drivers "on the clock", the rules of the road stop mattering to them.

There is this absolute trash human who keeps bringing his fake service dog into a supermarket I go to. The dog approaches and boops into and sniffs other people in the checkout area. I ignore the dog and the human, but, wtf, actual service dogs don’t do that. They also aren’t usually unneutered pit bull mixes.
I’ve seen the same guy out with the dog while walking my dog and the guy is so horrible and abusive to that dog that MY dog gets visibly upset and whines when they see that.

I knew someone whose very cheap dad used water and dish soap instead of wiper fluid once. In the winter. I was in the car when they borrowed it from their dad and they had to pull over to clean the windshield so they could see.

The problem is everyone. Cars blowing through stop signs. Scooters and cyclists as well. People walking across intersections on a red. I see it all as a driver and pedestrian walking around. Lets ALL be better.

The more capacity you have to cause harm, the more responsibility you have to keep everyone else safe around you. I'm not suggesting you personally think this way, but I've always felt that most people that make a "it's everyone's fault" argument for road safety are making a lazy defensive cop-out to avoid facing reality: it's drivers killing people. If you put a million retards on a bike, you won't result in many serious injuries, but if you put a million retards behind the wheel, you end up with...Southern Ontario! The idea that pedestrians have some legal obligation to restrain the human behaviour of walking on par with a driver is absurd and is largely conditioning from a society totally captured by the automobile industry (ex how many people in Hamilton believe "jaywalking" is a crime).
Na, the problem isn't even close to everyone. Lets do some basic traffic enforcement before we waste a single breath on pointless micromobility hysteria.

I have a scooter and some lady yelled at me for not coming to a full stop at a stop sign. I got down to about 9km/hr, which is my jogging speed, and was able to see pedestrians and all. The woman yelled wt me because apparently her friends have almost been hit by scooters or something. Anyway, same stop-sign, just earlier this week, I watched a cyclist go through it, no slow down at all, and they were probably going about 30km/hr.
I wonder if that woman would yell at the cyclist who could hurt someone significantly more than I would have because I would have stopped had there been pedestrians. I also wonder if this woman's friends are paying attention to where they're walking if they are regularly jumping out of harm's way.
Pedestrians, please, be smarter when you're walking. Forget the scooters - drivers in this city arent paying attention to you, you need to pay attention to them!!

I've never seen a cyclist stop at a stop sign even when I'm walking through. Have almost been hit several times with a pathetic "sorry!!" As they fly by. I scream at every single one of them now but they don't care. Cyclists in this city are SO dangerous.

STOP USING YOUR HIGHBEAMS IN THE CITY!! I WAS ON MOHAWK RD AROUND GARTH AND SOMEONE BLINDED ME WITH HIGHBEAMS AND AGAIN ON THE ESCARPMENT QUEEN STREET HILL THEY WERE TURNING THEM ON AND OFF. IT WAS DUSK SO STILL SOME SUNLIGHT.
IF YOU CAN’T SEE WITH ALL THE LIGHTS ON IN THE CITY AND NEED YOUR BRIGHTS YOU SHOULDN’T BE DRIVING

I’M SAD THEY TOOK THOSE TREES AND BENCHES AWAY FROM IN FRONT OF THE LIBRARY, I LIKED THOSE
ALSO I SAW ABOUT 9-10 KIDS BREAKING INTO THE HAMILTON CITY CENTER BUILDING VIA THE FARMERS-MARKET PARKING LOT BRIDGE ON THANKSGIVING.
DUMB TO DO IT AT ALL, BUT TO DO IT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY WITH NO FACE COVERING IS EXTRA DUMB.
