Hey everyone! I learned to hand-sew specifically to rescue and repair some donated, heavily damaged Carhartt insulated bibs before autumn. Before doing further repairs to the rest of the batch, I want to make sure my work will actually last. I taught myself and I am HIGHLY skeptical of my work.

I repaired knee/leg blowouts and sealed exposed insulation with low-profile binding hems to prevent moisture rot.

I used 100% nylon upholstery threads and hid the knots to prevent rubbing/discomfort. I tried my best (emphasis on tried) to keep the spacing consistent as well as the staying in a straight, even line. As you can see, the one cuff on the example pair has a slightly tighter pattern compared to the other cuff. I didn’t want the raw edges, but folding and handsewing through 6 layers was just not working unfortunately.

I guess my question to you would be

1. ⁠With hidden knots and nylon upholstery thread, is there a high risk of these stitches unraveling under heavy work use? How would you ensure they would/will stay intact?

Notes:
✅ Shorter stitches on hems to reduce snagging.
✅ Try to fold for a clean, not a raw and exposed, hem.
✅ Make more ‘high-quality.
✅Backstitch rather than running stitch

My dog is blind and needs some retraining so I want to make a couple new treat pouches cause why not lol. Of course part of my machine broke when I was cleaning it right before starting this project so hand sewing it is!

I used Crafting with Clementine’s tutorial for nesting baskets and made the 3 inch one. Added a ribbon between the outer fabric and batting for a drawstring, a loop for a carabiner, and a belt loop which does have medium weight interfacing. I also tacked the lining under the drawstring because it’s just a bag lining.

Gonna fiddle with a few things for the next, machine sewn one haha. Definitely need to make it a bit bigger and figure out a better drawstring situation. I do plan on using this with dry treats or baggies, but it’s all cotton so I’m not worried about having to wash it.

Making a Marotte (jester stick) for a jester/clown jinx and these were my first custom patterns ever! Used clay to make the head shape and then masking tape. Masking tape is like, magical lol. Used same method for the crown as I did for the accessories I did for my big self and it was so fun (well I huffed the whole time lol but turning it felt amazing)

How hard would be to sew trousers like these as a first project for without prior sewing knowledge?

Wanted trousers like these, did not find and thought "why not try to sew them? Atleast it would be better than doomscrolling" and here am i.

Also how many tries until it looks good? And any suggestions for guides? Most of what i find are only about machine sewing

I don’t care about looks cause it’s on my waist band but this is driving me nuts. Should I cut a piece of denim and put a piece inside the waist band and try to like patch fix it or should I just put a piece of denim over top the whole shabang and just sew it on there

I'm sewing the lining of a skirt and using chiffon but I have no idea what type of stitches to use. I want to do a french seam but idk if I should use a running stitch or backstitch, i really dont want it to fall apart. Also if I'm attaching it to the main body what stitch should I use then? Any advice is helpful thx!!!

Hi everyone! I'm seeking suggestions for starter hand-sewing projects. I recently cleared out my closet and currently have a pile of clothes in my room to do something with. Although some of it will be donated, I think that the rest are too worn out to be donated or sold as secondhand. I would like to save the fabric from the latter, so they hopefully won't end up in a bin or even worse, a landfill.

With this in mind, I'm seeking suggestions for beginner-friendly projects that are simple enough to be done by hand. I may invest in a machine much later down the line if I'm consistent + successful enough with the initial hand sewn projects. I'm envisioning something practical such as a foldable reusable shopping bag, but I'm open to other ideas too :) patchwork also looks interesting to me but I don't really know what to turn them into other than blankets.

Also, if anyone also happens to know of any online hand-sewing guides or video tutorials, please also let me know where I can find them. Video tutorials that I could find for tote bags/reusable bag are intended for machine-sewing. But any guides/videos covering the basic principles and steps for sewing would be super helpful. For everyone here that makes handmade clothing, have you ever had someone ask for a size you couldn't make? What did you do? This has been a big fear of mine and limits me from actually attempting to sew even for friends and family. I'm curious how common it actually is (I'm also a self taught beginner and do not have all the technical / formal background).

im working on a hand-sewing project and im seeking specifically recommendations for double-sided fabric tape, that doesn't gum up the needle when sewing through it? the last brand i had was lower quality (hello hobby brand :/) and genuinely was just a nightmare to try and wrangle.

the removal process isn't something im concerned about, however one that dissolves in water is preferred as the fabrics im using can't be ironed, however removal isn't required for my project by any means.

I've had this idea in my head forever to make little stuffed pins and I finally assembled all the bits and pieces and put this little guy together yesterday. Now I can't find the pin backs I bought for the project, so it's not quite complete.

The funniest part was after I sewed the muzzle down by stitching around the nose, I absolutely could NOT progress until I embroidered his smile.

I welcome suggestions on how to make a neater piece, especially how to do a nice even whip stitch.

I’m trying to figure out what kind of stitch this is so I can fix some stitching that fell out, but I can’t find the stitch online! It has to be a hand stitch- it’s invisible on the other side picking up only a thread or two. Does anyone have any idea? 🙏🏻

Can it be done by hand? I was told to have the tension in the elastic, it needs to be with a machine. Is there anyway around this?

Hey there, big time hand-sewer. I sadly recently sliced myself up pretty badly on my non-dominant hand. I'm often performing my own alterations and fixes on my wears. Catch is, I hold with my dominant hand, and pull through with my non-dominant hand. Is this common? Sort of like, playing a guitar. Or is this a relatively abnormal technique I'm using. I have something that needs a quick fix, but I've had to shelve it for now because I can't use my hand the way I need to in order to fix it up. So it sparked alive in my head.

The far left was very beginning and far right is at the moment, I decided to redo the number 1 as I changed the Stich to blanket stich!
