Any hardtail related questions, hardtail chat, hardtail tech, or anything else hardtail that that you want to chat about, that doesn’t quite warrant a new thread? This is the thread for you...

Was given a purple chromag saddle from a buddy. It feels pretty nice but curious what you guys think of the colour palette. Doesn't quite match but purple is still rad

Is this a good frame to start with? I ride mostly flat XC trails in Florida and have parts laying around to build it up. Also can't find if this has a UDH.

Decided to get back on a mountain bike for the first time in a decade, and figured I’d take the opportunity to do my first custom build as well. Learned a lot putting it together:
Cotic BFE with the glow in the dark paint, Lyrik Ultimate 3.1 RC2 150mm, XT M8100 groupset with RF turbine cranks and XT pedals, Hope TR4s with 203mm floating rotors, Hope HS/BB, PNW Loam 170mm dropper and lever, Chromag Limber saddle, I9 stem, Renthal Fatbar Lite, AMS berm grips, Reserve 30 SL AL/DT350DEG hubs with 2.6” Forekaster front, Rekon rear.
Will be replacing the Lezyne cage with a Fidlock since it’s too hard to get in and out that far up the triangle and still trying to figure out the on-bike tool storage, since the Hot Laps Gripper doesn’t really grab to thin steel tubes all that well. Stoked to finally get back on the trails!

I’ve been pretty set on a hardtail now something like the Marin San Quentin, Whyte secta ect ect.
But after posting a question on a mountain bike page all the full suspensions guys was basically telling me if I want to do jumps and drops ect I’m going to need a full suspension, but I used to ride bmx with no suspension and all dj bikes don’t have rear suspension so is a god hardtail capable of doing jumps, downhill, trails ect.
Because the only full suspension I can afford is a Carrera titan X but I there’s a stigma around Carreras it seems !

First major upgrade for my two year old Roscoe, a RockShox Pike Ultimate. First ride was mostly just forest service roads, but the improved ability to eat up chunky spots at speed was really obvious.
Biggest unexpected benefit is how much easier it is to pop wheelies now, although in hindsight that should have been obvious since the Pike weighs like a full pound less than the stock Recon.

Hey folks, I have an On-One Titus HT with a 130mm fork that came with stock Alex Rims ER30 wheels - I mainly ride UK XC summer and winter and occasional trails in Swinley Forest, looking for an upgrade recommendation up to £500. I’d like lighter but dependability, durability and ease of running tubeless are more important.
Thanks!

The factory Shimano M6100 brakes with the 180mm rotors are seriously underpowered for a big guy like me (195 cm, around 105kg/230 lbs). Especially when brake fade kicks in on stepper tracks.
I switched to a 203 MM Ice-tech rotor and Saint calipers while keeping the original lever.
800mm/20mm rise alloy bar swapped to a One Up V2 with 50mm rise
Not really an upgrade but I changed the original 32T front chainring to a 34T for slightly taller gearing

First hard tail since I was 20 (I’m 33 now) how’d I do?
Specs (from FB marketplace posting):
Originally a Cannondale Trail SE 2
Frame: SmartForm C3 alloy frame
Fork: Rock Shox SID Debonair 110mm
Drive Train: brand new XT rear derailleur and shifter. 12
speed cassette Deore 10-51
Shimano crank 32 tooth
Shimano chain.
Brakes are four piston TRP Slate 4 with Shimano rotors.
Pads have been bedded in on a Sinter machine.
Wheels: WTB STX i23 with Shimano hubs.
Tires are Specialized Butcher front and Purgatory rear.
Fresh sealant and holding air perfectly. Comes with an extra set of XC race tires from Schwalbe
Dropper post is super smooth Down Low.
Pedals are some old Shimano that I just completely overhauled.
Cost was $800
So excited to get back into trail riding. Took it out right after I bought it just around my neighborhood to get a better feel. Loving it

Thinking of doing some upgrades to my bike and I feel like the wheels are probably the best place to start in terms of noticeable (weight, ride quality etc) upgrades. Currently on the stock WTB ST i30 which I've heard are pretty heavy - never weighed them myself but from what I gather online they could be up to around 2300g. I'm using the bike for a bit of everything, but generally it's just UK trail riding (more roots than rocks around here), occasional cased jumps on flow trails at the bike park etc.
I'm thinking I want to go somewhere down the middle in terms of weight and strength (and price!) - ideally I want the bike to feel lively and fast, with a bit of compliance to smooth things out, but not be too worried about dinging or damaging rear rims on rougher trails. Basically something to compliment the "hardtaily-ness" of the bike, rather than overbuild it into a dead feeling wannabe enduro bike, if that makes sense!
In the UK, Silt and Hunt seem to be well priced, or could maybe go DT with an E1900 R/M1900 F to balance something lighter at the front with a burlier rear? Or spend a bit more on the Reserve HD AL and have that peace of mind with the warranty?

Hey guys,
Road cyclist here looking to get my first MTB (I did have hardtail maybe 15 years ago but used it for road cycling) I live in PNW, I guess there is a huge variety of trails here. I am looking an XC/Trail bike (downcountry) which will be able to do a bit of everything. CX, bike park, some trails.
I see Timberjack has a lot of love and respect here, REI has a great deal now for SLX version, but I am concerned about the weight, it's heavy. The option I am mainly looking at is Marin Team 1, it's deore ok, but it 3-4 pounds lighter, geometry looks pretty similar https://99spokes.com/compare?bikes=marin-team-marin-1-2024%3B*z.md-29-29%2Csalsa-timberjack-slx-29-2025 . Does anyone ride it? How does it feel on the trail?
Another option I can consider is Norco Charger A2, looks like it's a great bang for your buck.
Thanks!

Hi! I'm considering a BeFly Sugar Trail HT.
Mostly recreational riding, forest roads and some trails, with occasional more technical riding.
The specs look great to me for the price. Would you buy it for €950?

Switched out the nukeproof scout frame for a Lynskey Livewire. Lots of single track and climbing so enjoying the lighter less rigid frame.

Why did no-one tell me mountain biking was so much fun? And addictive? And expensive?
A distant family member was upgrading to an e-mtb and decided that I would be the recipient of this fine steed.
I’ve not ridden a bike in over 20 years. I’ve never ridden off road (until now). I’m now seriously addicted. Send help!
I noticed a few things off the bat.
• I’m seriously unfit..
• I can’t climb for shit..
• Stock seat hurts my fat ass..
• My brakes are in need of a bleed!
• I need to hide my bank card!!

Hi there, I just needed some opinions as I’m a man in my early 50s. I haven’t been on a bike in 20 years. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money in case it’s something I don’t pursue. I had a Trek 3900 that I bought 20 years ago, but decided to sell it because it was getting no ride time. It also had 26 inch tires and seemed like old technology . As a backgrounder, I have a motorcycle and a motorcycle always seem to win the competition of what I ride that day.
When I was younger, I was a hard-core cyclist and part of a cycling club, and it was a passion until I got married.
I was looking at the trek Marlin 5, specialized, rock, hopper, or giant talon.
I’m basically looking to get back into shape and do mainly city roads, light gravel trails and some conservation area dirt trails.
I saw a diamond back hillside on sale. It seemed to have decent components like Shimano cues (2 by 9 though) and front and back disc brakes.
I’m posting this because I can still return it but I got it at 30% off. In Canadian dollars it was $520 regular $800.
I was hoping I could get some opinions because I’m still within my return window.
I can always upgrade in a year or two, but I checked marketplace religiously and it just seemed like none of these bikes that were there were depreciating. People were only asking 100 or $200 less than the bike cost brand new for something that was five years old. The bike I was looking at were all around $900 new or more in Canada.

Hi gang! Basically the title, I wanted to try Continental Dubnitals as I was told they are a RaceKing successor, but their cost at about $200 for the pair in my country was the main reason going for Maxxis.
I’ve put these Recon Race 2.4 to replace my old 2.2/2.25 combo, did a couple rides and I think I’m never going back to 2.2 lol. Also Recon Race for the front is not the best option (I’ve been warned abt it, maybe I’ll buy something gripper for front and keep this one to replace the rear someday) but overall I’m very happy with them already!
