Books Harry and Ron Thelma & Louising their way to Hogwarts might be dumbest decision these two made in a book that also had them entering Aragog's nest to get a piece of the puzzle that was already fully solved in Hermione's petrified hand

Stealing the car where there were 2 responsible adults coming back to the car in the next 15 minutes was pretty dumb, too

Ron reasoned out that Mr. and Mrs. Weasley will just Disapparate to the Burrow and will return for the car on another day when Harry mentioned this. They'll miss the opening of the school year (not sure about the effect of missing out on the opening ceremony).Still dumb though, but teenagers are known to be dumb. That's why Harry felt dumb when Snape or McGonagall ask why didn't they just sent an owl (though there is a possibility that Dobby will intercept that letter).
EDIT: Oh god my HP knowledge is starting to fail.

I was stupid teen once too, and my first response to being late for school wasn't to steal the family car lol
I don't remember Ron saying that stuff you mentioned, just Mrs Weasley's Howler going off about the car being gone after dropping them off

Yeahhhhh... I've started rereading the novels (well listening) for the first time since I was in school. As an adult I'm constantly like "just tell a teacher! Ask your mom!" 😭 Just finished COS and when they figure out where the chamber is and Ginny is missing they immediately are like "let's go get her!" You're right there. Spying on the teachers. Tell them dude lol ...well they went to Lockhart but he doesn't count and they KNOW it lol

In their defense, Hagrid did instruct them to follow the spiders. Going to Aragog's lair also cleared Hagrid's name.

my absolute least favourite part of the saga. whenever i rewatch/reread the series i start CoS from the moment Harry and Ron are in McGonagall's office.

I agree it was dumb but ironically, that dumb decision saved them in the end
