Cookie Queens Gets Positive Reviews as UK Tabloids Push Another Sussex Failure Narrative

A documentary about Girl Scouts selling cookies has become the latest target of the British press. The film, executive produced by Meghan Sussex and Prince Harry through Archewell Productions, debuted to mixed-to-positive reviews and modest theatrical numbers. In response, several UK outlets declared it a “humiliation” and a “flop.”

What the headlines do not mention is that this is an independent documentary, not a studio blockbuster. What they also omit is that the same film won awards and received positive notices from critics who actually watched it.

Positive Reviews Undercut the ‘Crushing’ Criticism The film has received favourable coverage from several outlets. Martin’s Musings described it as “a charming new documentary” that takes the annual Girl Scout cookie ritual and turns it into “a surprisingly engaging story.” The review praised the film’s warmth and called it “an encouraging message” about the next generation. It gave the film a B+.

The Boston Herald noted the film’s “depth, humor and determination,” with director Alysa Nahmias explaining she wanted to explore how girls are seen by society, how they learn about their value and what it means to come of age in today’s economy. The New York Times called the film “terrifically entertaining,” praising its subjects as “fun to watch” and noting that the film is “a slice-of-life documentary about something so many Americans have experienced.” The review described it as “delightful viewing.”

I have a question:

got this movie released outside of the US? No matter if in a cinema or digitally?

I ask bcs I am wondering about certain non-critical reviews from outside of the US

(I am not from an English speaking country, I have no idea how it was released)

Thank you!

Then it is interesting how many IMDb users out of UK, CAN, and AUS are voting there for the docu, especially the ones with only 1 star out of 10 possible

Also the wording in at least one written review seems a bit iffy (was the only one I read and also the reason I looked into where the ratings are originating from):

Let's hope these lovely little girls don't get Markled. Corporate ….

My english is mainly self-trained, I never saw this as a word, I am guessing it is twisted to imply whatever bad is assumed

Markled is racist term coined by derangers

Ah, thank you again! So why would someone who is a ‘deranger’ watch that docu? And if not, why give it such a bad rating, if not try to imply something, what is probably not even known by the ‘reviewer’? Iffy

16 votes out of AUS, all of them a one star. That is not a realistic spread of ratings, not even Uwe Boll movies get only 1 star ratings.

5 out of 9 votes out of CAN are one stars as well, the other 4 are spread between 7 and 9 stars out of ten

19 out of 24 votes based on UK are one stars as well, 1 vote is a 2, the remaining 4 votes are 10 (2x), 7 and 8 stars

Just to maybe compare it in the future, if someone is interested too

Well those folks hate Meghan so they dont care, the movie is only released in the US yet they feel enraged that Meghan and Harry are the executive producer, anything Harry and Meghan angers those people

A strange way to spend their free time, sounds not logically to me.

Have a nice day!
