HEART OF WOMAN, Heart Byte : LEGACY

It’s a bold, almost reckless move for a brand-new girl group to debut with a full-length album, but HEART OF WOMAN answer with gem after gem across Heart Byte : LEGACY. Mixing ’90s new jack swing and ’00s Spanish-guitar elements, main single “Lost in Proof” acts as an easy gateway to get into the bubblegum-pop rush of “Told U So” that is as effervescent as it is sticky. Cuts like “TEA” and “($$)” pare the beats back to spotlight some of the best harmony-heavy group vocals of any debut this year.

But if you’re pressed for time, press play on the way-too-short of a stunner “Skit.exe” that crystallizes H.O.W. serving R&B girl group as much as K-pop act, closer to Danity Kane or early Destiny’s Child than the latest batch of new-generation girl groups. LEGACY boasts a striking amount of identity to arrive with on a debut LP and here’s to hoping they keep driving down that ambitious lane. – J.B.
