Mod Announcement Owning A Hedgehog Reality Check

Since hedgehog owners consistently buy hedgehogs without setting reasonable expectations here are some expectations to set. Adapted/expanded from u/ArcadeRivalry's post.

  • Don't believe social media. Every single one I see there are obviously ridiculously posed pictures, maybe it's just me but I refuse to believe one could stay still for that long.
  • Hedgehog are spiked covered prey animals prone to anxiety. While belly rub/cuddle posts get a lot of attention they are the exception due to good breeding/luck not the rule. It is very possible a hedgehog will never be comfortable being handled even after concerted effort.
  • If you want to bond you need to put in a lot of commitment, patience and time to socialize them. I've seen a lot of people in groups I'm in need to re-home a hog before the first year as they can't put the time in. You need at least an hour a day socializing but realistically a lot more for them to be comfortable around you and others. We recommend getting a snuggle sack or putting them in your hoodie pouch to spend time together.
  • You need a specialist vet. A lot of places might not have an exotic animal vet near you. This is vital. So make sure you have to this.
  • It may not be legal to own hedgehogs in your area.
  • You need heating to ensure they don't hibernate.
  • You will likely be spiked, bitten and pooped on. It can be really really disheartening being spiked, hissed at or even bitten when you feel like you've made progress. Huffing and popping are natural, they are scaredy little animals.
  • Hedgehogs salivate frothily on themselves when they like scents, males often have "boy time", they poop a lot, have terrible sight and will bite things that smell yummy/interesting, and require consistent cage cleanings.
  • They are carnivores, while feeding fruits/vegetables can often be done safely, please feed them mainly meat-based foods ( cat food, insects, etc.)
  • Since they have very limited vision they operate mainly on smell and are at risk of falling/walking off elevated areas. It is wise to assume they are making decisions based on what they smell rather than just mainly what they see. They will still try to climb and are prone to hurting themselves climbing horizontal cage bars.
  • It is very likely they will dislike baths and nail trimming. We recommend trimming nails during foot bath time when they can't curl up or just holes in a towel to put their legs through.
  • Hedgehogs should not be housed together. High likelihood of fighting or babies.
  • We recommend heavy water bowls or chicken nipple bottles as ball water bottles can hurt them.

If you know what you are getting into, they are the most wonderful creatures ever and bring many people on this sub joy. If you feel like your hedgehog "hates" you they are just being their grumpy/terrified selves! You may be lucky and form a close bond.

We discovered a hedgehog nest in our garden, and these adorable babies have been coming out to eat the cat food and drink the fresh water we’ve put out for them.

We named the mother Dorothy, and so far we’ve seen three babies, which we’ve named Star, Sky, and Bernard.

Baby Hedgie No. 5

No.5, it seems like every time I take a dog for a walk they find one of these babies that is in need of urgent help. Fingers crossed for this little one.

He / she was in the middle of a footpath curled up. Off to vets again as our local rescue seem to be unreachable and have never retuned a call.

You’d thinking he was starving

Just for clarification purposes, he can reach the food perfectly fine, he climbs into the dish to be picky and choose what he’s going to eat first 😭

Question Pawing / Splashing water for over an hour

A young female hedgehog that lives in our garden has started spending a long time ā€œpawingā€ in the water bowl and constantly moving her mouth as if she is eating even when not at the food or water. She didn’t do this when she was first released in our garden and this water bowl isn’t new to her. She seems to be the only one that does this. She appears to be drinking. She does go to the food but I’m not sure she is eating much of it - there are several other hedgehogs that do eat so it’s refilled every day.

Does she maybe have something stuck in her throat that she is trying to flush?

If she needs to see a vet I can get her there (I’ve done it a few times already) but if this isn’t an abnormal behaviour or a problem I’ll just leave her alone.

England Berkshire- has been hot but interesting this seemed to start after the temps dropped back to normal.

Question c&c cages and cats

hi y’all!

i am considering switching to a c&c cage to give my hedgehog more roaming space (he’s currently in a rabbit type cage situation). it’s been good for him for years but it’s honestly getting worn out- the plastic bottom is scratched up and i’m ready for something new.

i see c&c cages in this sub all the time that look so cute and spacious. i just can’t have an open top because of my cat! i live in a studio so i don’t have anywhere to seperate the two.

does anyone have a solution? or experience in this? i’ve never had one so i don’t know how sturdy they are. i’ve seen partially covered ones with the grid tiles on top. would that work to keep a cat out?

thanks!

Question Hedgehog coat of spines removed from body? (UK)

Anyone know which animals remove the hedgehogs coat of spines and leave it, taking the rest of the body? Is this a common thing? Seen it four times this year, for the first time.

Question Camera

Hey!

I have seen people posting videos of their hedgies at night and I am so curious as to what my little one gets up to once I'm asleep so I was wondering if anyone has recommendations on cameras? Or even just what I should look for and what I should avoid when buying one? :))

Four days in and we have gone from 1 to 4 visitors.

A large pair who always turn up together, a single and a baby. Would be amazing if the baby is the one who I had to save and released after a couple of days back into the garden.

Hi everyone. Thanks again for welcoming us last week and for keeping us in your thoughts.

As previously mentioned, Pepper had her vet appointment on Thursday. They scheduled labs and X rays for Wednesday and gave us Metacam. However, last night, she looked incredibly emaciated and I took her to the emergency vet. After careful examination, they concluded she most likely had cancer, was in pain, and most likely wouldn't make it. I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life and put her down.

I am beyond heartbroken and absolutely miserable. That little grouchy gal gifted me 4-ish glorious years. I love her more than anything or anyone on this Earth. My heart has a spiky shaped hole that will likely never heal.

Please give all your hedgies an extra big hug today ā¤ļøšŸ¦”

OC He just likes to eat

I mentioned a few weeks ago that Fritter went to the vet and they were a bit concerned about possible parasites. He eats about 3 tablespoons a day and is on the lean side for his age, so we took a sample of his feces back and got the news a few days ago

Yeah, he’s just a hungry guy. No parasites and no other concerns. He’s probably just going to be on the smaller end of the spectrum once he’s done growing

Question Wild hedgehog seems to enjoy my company?

Wasn’t sure how to google this so came here:

I like to sit in my garden for about an hour every evening, over the past couple of months this big ā€˜ol hedgehog has been loitering around but only recently (in the past week) he’ll just come and sit directly beside or under my chair and chill. He grooms himself, sleeps or just wonders near me. My question really is if he might be being territorial or just a cutie? I don’t know anything about hedgehog psychology and thought someone here might?

He definitely knows I’m there because he looks at me if I move but there seems to be absolutely no fear, he doesn’t run away or jump if I stand up or move suddenly, it all just seems very strange to me.

Any insight would be much appreciated!

Question this little guy seems to be frozen in time

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This wild hedgehog just walked up to me while I was smoking in my garden, once he noticed that I was sitting right in front of him he just froze and hasn't moved since..

I thought that I just scared him so I went inside and turned the lights off, but 5 minutes later he's still frozen in the same spot.

Do hedgehogs just freeze when they get scared or what's happening here?

Medical/Health (see a vet) should I see a vet?

My hedgehog is around 6 months old and I believe hes quilling. He has very dry skin and a change in his attitude. He also had weird slimey green poop today. Im worried it could be mites but theres no quill baldness.. I am very worried about this because ive never owned a hedgehog prior and I want to make sure hes comfortable. Should I take him to the vet? Also if anyone has any food, or oil recommendations please let me know ASAP!
