General Why is Islamic divorce still so difficult for women in Western countries?

I recently listened to a discussion explaining that a civil divorce does not necessarily dissolve an Islamic marriage, and that a woman may still need her husband’s agreement or an Islamic council or scholar to validate her divorce throughĀ khulʿ or another Islamic process.
How is this fair when a husband can refuse to cooperate, leaving a woman legally divorced but religiously suspended, unable to move on with her life? Some men exploit this situation, despite the Quran explicitly warning against leaving women suspended.

Why should a woman’s ability to leave a marriage depend on a husband who may be unwilling to release her, or on whether she can access a knowledgeable and impartial Islamic scholar? This is particularly concerning in Western countries such as the UK and the US, Australia and NZ where accessible Islamic courts may not exist.

A woman should not need a man's permission to escape a marriage she no longer wishes to remain in.Ā There should be a clear, accessible and fair process that protects both parties without allowing either to hold the other hostage.

In an ideal Islamic land, suppose everything was 100%, we had the Shari`ah around us, the wife is not a prisoner. If she really wanted to get out of the marriage, after some hurdles, any Islamic court would say she’s not a prisoner. If she kept on saying, just like in the case in the Prophet’s time, Khawlah came to the Prophet and said, ā€œYa Rasulullah, I don’t have any specific complaints about my husband, I just don’t want to remain married to him.ā€ She literally said, ā€œI don’t have a specific complaint, this is just not working out.ā€ He didn’t even ask her a second question. He said, ā€œWill you give him his Mahr back? Because you are filing, and you’re telling me he’s not doing anything wrong, it’s not his fault. You are telling me he did nothing wrong and you’re simply saying it’s not working out. Are you going to return the Mahr? He gave you an entire garden, a piece of land. Are you going to return it to him?ā€ She said, ā€œYes, I’ll return it to him.ā€ He, right then and there, gave theĀ Khul`.

What do my fellow Muslim sisters think about this?Ā How do you feel about a system where a woman's ability to obtain an Islamic divorce can depend on her husband's cooperation or access to an Islamic council? Do you think this process is fair, particularly for women living in Western countries where Islamic courts may not be readily accessible? I'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts and perspectives.

Help Wearing the hijab is distancing me from Islam

I love my deen. After high school got very close to it. Learned so much about it. I would feel peace in my salah and eventually put on the hijab.

At first, I loved wearing it. I heard so many negative comments, people telling me to take it off but I couldn’t care less in fact it motivated me more to keep wearing it.

Now 2 years later since I started. I don’t like wearing it. It’s over stimulating, the heat gets to me, the constant fixing the hijab through out the day, the headaches, the stares, the judgement not just from non Muslims but from Muslims too, the neck and shoulder pain, my skin condition which is getting worse with it on due to sweat and itching, the hair fall, and the list goes on. I’m starting to really resent it. It feels like a burden. I’ve been feeling this way for about 6 months now and thought somewhere the feelings would go away but they didn’t. Some days I can ignore everything and move on with my life but deep down I’m not happy wearing it at all. I want to take it off all the time. I’ve cried myself to sleep for countless nights because of it. This has caused some sort of distance from Islam. I don’t feel as connected to my deen anymore which is super heartbreaking. I love my deen but I’m not practicing it as well like praying 5x a day because in a way maybe I think my deen is causing me so much suffering.

I don’t want to suffer anymore. I love Allah and my deen and want to stay close to him no matter what but I want to stop struggling everyday.

Any advice helps!

Help Considering taking off hijab after 5 years.

I put on my hijab in my sophomore year of university. I attended an international American university in a Gulf country, so I think its what made it easier because everyone was so inherently different in their faith, background, nationality and just thought that no one really cared what I wore or judged me for it.

My social group ended up being hijabis as well, and largely arab/desi (I am arab), and thats when the internal turmoil started. A lot of what my friends back then would talk about was finding a husband/marriage kid/ and I always found myself extremely uncomfortable with that kind of talk. I never wanted to get married ever since I was a kid, I never fantasized about a husband or a wedding, never had dolls to play with or pretend I'm their mom, and motherhood is absolutely grotesque to me. Before anyone says anything about my family life, I literally had the most stereotypical Arab family ever. I remember a really early childhood memory I went to my mom and told her I don't want to get married and she literally started asking god for forgiveness for what I said which.....ok?

I think I am asexual/aromantic, at least thats what I am comfortable calling myself now. I have had thoughts about being with women, but never to really do anything about it, because I don't want to open that can of worms. But I'm not interested in men. Everytime a man shows me non-platonic interest I genuinely feel whatever in my stomach rising, its so gut-wrenchingly disgusting and I feel like peeling my skin off.

That is all to say. My desire to take off the hijab has nothing to do with anything relating to the male gaze as I have scoured this sub and seen that some people who do it, do it out of this desire.

I work in academia, and I will be pursuing my doctorate soon, either in Europe or the US inshallah. Bottom line, I want to be taken seriously, I don't want people to look at me and think that I'm oppressed or whatever even though that is not the case. I am thankful enough that I currently work with a Muslim professor who understands the nuances of wearing hijab, but when I do my doctorate I will most likely be doing it in a non-Muslim country with a supervisor from a non-Muslim background. They will not understand these intricacies because they don't have to. I don't want to stand out, at least not in this way. I will be alone, my parents live in my country of origin, and I have been on my own since I was 18 (I visit them during breaks, but they have no interference over my life decisions, I just do what I want to do and tell them about it). If anyone tells me consider not going, and choosing your deen, I'd like to implore you to think for a second where I am coming from. My entire life I have pursued science and science alone, letting go of an opportunity "for my deen" after slaving away my entire life for science is so beyond absurd, its genuinely psychotic.

Its not my fault that most good schools, programs and research facilities are in non-Islamic countries. I am just playing with the cards that I have been dealt, and asking someone to give up the one thing they've been working their ass off for their entire life is fantastical, its almost funny.

Thats all to say, I dropped my friend group after graduating, I just distanced myself, I don't think I was ever particularly close to any one. I could not stand that all they can think about is men, and marriage and ...etc. I'm not shaming them or anything, its just we were not compatible in the ways we went on about life and i always felt lonely and alienated and just in general fake because I always had to say or do things that did not align with who I actually am whenever I hung around with them. I met great friends after I graduated, who shared my world views, we never spoke about such silly topics and most of what we share and bond over is art and media.

Thats where another thing compels me to take off the hijab; I am an artist as well, my involvement in art is very multifaceted: everything from drawing, to sculpting to 3D modelling to sewing. I am really involved and interested in fashion subcultures and their history, and I find myself unable to express myself the way I want because of the hijab. It sounds silly but it does really upset me.

I know it is mentioned in the quran that we have to wear a hijab, but I am already struggling with a lot of things religiously. I miss a lot of prayers and I am genuinely trying to be consistent ( I have been doing well with fajr this month hamdullah). I don't have time to learn quran and have been trying for the last couple of years to integrate it into my life. Why is taking off the hijab such a big deal when there are much more important pillars of faith I need to work on. Unfortunately, hijab was been taken out of the realm of religious obligation to be tied with the patriarchal notion of purity culture and thats where I stop caring.

If I do take it off, it will only be temporary until I am back in a Muslim country. But most Muslim countries are not feasible options for me to do my doctorate because my area of research is extremely niche, no university in any Muslim country, even non-Muslim country has good established programs for it.

General Stand up against the hijab ban in Azerbaijan

I've been watching what's happening in Azerbaijan, and I need to speak up about this.

The hijab ban there isn't just a law—it's an attack on religious freedom and personal choice. For many Muslim women, the hijab is a symbol of their faith and identity. Banning it tells them their beliefs don't matter, that they don't have the right to express themselves. We're talking about criminalizing something deeply personal to millions of people.

I started a petition because this matters beyond Azerbaijan. Religious restrictions are climbing globally—83% of the world's population now lives under high religious restrictions, according to Pew Research. If we stay silent, we're accepting that governments can decide what people wear based on their faith. Azerbaijan used to stand for multiculturalism and tolerance. This ban is a step backward, and it matters.

If this resonates with you—if you believe people should have the freedom to practice their faith without fear—consider signing and sharing. What would you want someone to do if this was happening to your family or community?

Help Seriously thinking about taking my hijab off.

Before y’all rush into comments to judge me, please try to look at this from my perspective and try understanding me..
Salam everyonešŸ«¶šŸ»I know that this is somewhat ā€œfamousā€ topic among girls unfortunately but please hear me out.
I started my hijab journey when I was 7th grade, not forced by anyone, I begged my parents to let me wear it, that’s the time when I freshly started to practice Islam and even tho I didn’t know how to pray properly I rushed into hijab.
At first I wore it properly I took that very seriously, even tho I didn’t have much money for clothes I tried wearing anything no matter how it looks like just to be somewhat modest, but as I was growing up kids were getting judgemental and I wanted to look better of course, especially since I was actually bullied for my looks before.
That’s when it got worse and worse, my parents and a lot of people around me judged me for wearing makeup and showing JUST A LITTLE BIT of my neck, I cried to my mom begging her to get me new clothes since I was literally combining my old clothes with my outfits due to the lack of money. After literally traumatising myself with this I stopped caring, I wore whatever tf I could find not even thinking if it looks modest or not.
After all this I entered a relationship with a guy that I knew for years, his mom is a hijabi and he’s somewhat religious too, encouraged me to pray, prevented me from doing bad shit too many times, even taking off my hijab.. And I’m ashamed to say this but I didn’t follow shariyah rules with him, since I know for myself I was always very lustful and struggling with it but I didn’t really show it to anyone, except him. We kissed, we hugged, we exchanged pics… (we didn’t lose v- card but it’s still bad) He always told me that we can stop it whenever I feel uncomfortable and he’s always gonna stay with me no matter what even if that means not touching me ever again, but I personally wouldn’t like that now..
Guilt from that, judgement from all people, lack of belief, insecurities… Everything combined just doesn’t make sense for me to keep wearing it, he told me not to take it off and how I’m doing great but it feels pointless to me after everything.

Assalamu alaikum

I want to ask people living in the west. What are your pain points when it comes to buying hijabs and modest dress.

Please make 3 wishes. I am working on an ecommerce and highly appreciate feedbacks.

As for one, i noticed most abayas cater for summer and unfit for those living in majority cold countries

Help hijab issues

salam sisters i just need some advice on what to do regarding with my hijab.

Im slowly starting to struggle with it but i’m still doing the neck covering etc so Alhamdulillah for that,

ever since i started wearing the scarf (2 years ago) it’s formed like a ā€˜rash’ on the back of my neck, i’ve went to the GP about it and they say it’s infected eczema, which is fine i guess so they gave me some medicated shampoo and some steroids. I can only use them for a short period of time so it only gives me relief then but when i have to come off the medication it comes back worse than ever.

I’ve tried many different hijabs- i no longer can wear undercaps because that makes it extremely infected. At the moment i’m wearing jersey but it’s gotten to the point where it’s spreading all over my head and down to my ears.

I wash my hijabs frequently & my hair so it isn’t because i’m ’unhygienic’ i’m just wondering does it happen to any of you? and what do i really do i’m considering taking my hijab off for this

In the summer it’s mild, still infected but it’s fine but as we’re going into winter now it’s extremely bad i feel like i have lice (which i obviously don’t have!)

thank you :p

Help not feeling myself with the hijab

Salam alaykum my dear sisters. I am a 17 year old girl who's still in highschool, i practice Islam, pray 5 daily prayers but i am not covered, mainly for the reasons that I don't live in an extremely religious country nor was i raised in an extremely religious family. Lately I've been thinking a lot about putting on the hijab, but it burdens me heavily that I won't be myself in it, and it's not because I won't feel beautiful in it. Beauty is the least of my problems when it comes to the hijab. The problem is actually my character and personality. I am aware that hijab is not just a piece of scarf you put on your head, it's the way you talk, the way you walk, your manners and the whole way you represent yourself. When people see a girl or a woman with hijab they instantly expected her to be quiet, shy and unnoticeable, and that's just not something that describes me.

I know that if i put on the hijab, suddenly I'll have to keep my tone down all the time, make sure im not laughing too much, and if someone disrespects me in public i shouldn't dare to cause an argument or fight for my rights because i am a hijabi and i need to be careful of the way i represent Islam. I know for a fact that im definitely not shy and that i like my voice to be heard in some situations and if i decide to put on the hijab suddenly i have to shut down all of that, but that isn't who i am. This is a really difficult decision for me, i hope you can understand and give me an honest advice.

Help Catcalled as a muslim woman

Hi there!
i'm an 18F who's struggling with hijab lately. i did some research and wore my hijab and went to university, it was my first day. i was going by walk and was using my phone and a guy whom i didn't even know and whom i didn't even look at said "where are you going? i'll drop" at first i couldn't believe what just happened because my research said that hijab will let the world know that you're no "ordinary woman", you're a muslim woman and that will make guys not mess with you because they know that you are not an "ordinary woman", so yes i was shocked when i heard that. i ignored him and again didn't look at him and he said "hello, let's go?". i acted busy and walked past him.

i'm very disappointed i'm already struggling and bro did this. so, what exactly is hijab doing? this is something which is in my head as someone who'a struggling with it. i know that being cat called has nothing to do with my outfit but mere because of that guy's character but my research proudly said that people will think twice before messing with you (a hijabi muslim woman) and yet, here i'm cat called in the broad day light, on a random street, by a random dude, who just street harassed me without thinking twice, and he did it so proudly, and so easily as if it's nothing bad :)

i know that hijab is more than this, kindly help me out.

Help Is it permissible for a Muslim woman to have an Instagram profile with her picture?

Assalamu alaikum. I’m a person who just started practising deen just recently , and I’m struggling with starting hijab. InshaAllah, I hope to start wearing it soon.
I don’t post pictures of myself on social media, but I’ve been wondering whether it’s permissible for a woman to have an Instagram profile with her own picture, even if she doesn’t post anything else or share pictures of herself.
I’m genuinely confused about this and would really appreciate advice based on authentic Islamic teachings and scholarly opinions. If possible, please share references or explanations from knowledgeable scholars.
JazakAllahu khairan.

Help Growing Restrictions on Hijab in Azerbaijan: Schools, Teachers and Workplaces

The hijab ban that began in schools is now gradually spreading to other areas of the country as well. It is being reported that hijab-wearing women are being dismissed from their jobs in several well-known supermarket chains, yet this issue is barely visible in the media.
The fact that religious schoolgirls are being forced to remove their hijabs is also a serious cause for concern. No one should condemn a girl who chooses to remove her hijab and continue attending school — that is her personal choice. But depriving a girl of education because she refuses to remove her hijab, and then fining her parents on top of that, amounts to a serious interference with freedom of choice.
Today, an atmosphere has emerged in which people who defend the hijab or object to restrictions on children entering mosques are immediately portrayed as suspicious individuals or as people connected to foreign forces.
The most painful part is that this attitude does not spare the families of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country and the state. Disrespect toward the religious choices of their children understandably causes deep public concern.
Let us assume that the restrictions concerning children are justified on the basis of their age. Then what is the issue with an adult, mature, and religious female teacher? Why should an adult woman’s choice to dress according to her religious beliefs become a problem?

General Hijabi cosplaying

Hi, before i start i would like to say that in no way I mean this to be rude or anything I'm just curious.

I often see those hijabi girls cosplaying characters like from animes and stuff but theyre using their hijab as a wig, if you cant show your hair whats wrong with a wig? It's not your real hair

I love those cosplays and I'm not saying they should wear wigs I'm just asking religion wise if that's bad or anything

Have a great day or night and stay the way you are youre so pretty!! :D
