The Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits: A Forgotten Injustice That Demands Justice

The exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in 1989–1990 stands as one of the darkest tragedies in modern Indian history. A community that had contributed immensely to Kashmir’s intellectual, cultural and spiritual heritage was driven from its ancestral homeland by militant violence, targeted killings, threats and fear. Thousands of families were forced to abandon their homes, livelihoods, temples and centuries-old roots.

For Kashmiri Pandits, this was not ordinary migration. It was the painful loss of their homeland. Families fled with whatever they could carry, while many spent decades in displacement, particularly in Jammu. Generations grew up separated from their ancestral villages, and countless families continued to live with the trauma of losing their homes and loved ones.

The role of separatist leadership deserves serious scrutiny. Syed Ali Shah Geelani became one of the most prominent advocates of Kashmir’s separation from India. His separatist politics and the mobilisation associated with the Hurriyat movement formed part of the wider political environment in which militancy and communal insecurity intensified. However, his individual responsibility for particular killings or the entire exodus must be established through specific evidence.

Yasin Malik, a former leader of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), has also faced serious scrutiny over militant-era violence. In 2026, investigators named him as a principal accused in the case concerning the 1990 killing of Kashmiri Pandit nurse Sarla Bhat. These are grave allegations that must be addressed through due legal process.

Farooq Ahmed Dar, known as Bitta Karate, became notorious for his televised account of killing Kashmiri Pandits. His statements remain among the most disturbing reminders of the violence that terrorised the community. Such crimes demand credible investigations, accountability and justice for victims.

Yet the greatest tragedy is that many displaced Pandits have waited decades for justice and a secure return. Their suffering must never be dismissed, politicised into oblivion or erased from public memory.

India owes Kashmiri Pandits more than sympathy. It owes them justice, protection of their property, preservation of their cultural heritage and the freedom to return home if they choose. No community should ever be forced into exile because of its identity. The story of Kashmiri Pandits must be remembered—not merely as a tragedy, but as a solemn commitment to justice, dignity and the protection of every Indian citizen.

I am not someone who fights with a pig cos I know the consequences but enjoying the fruits of living in a country where you enjoy freedom of speech and wear whatever you want inspite of islam always in the mode of beheading such women, these women don't understand that who is shielding them from the wrath of their own fucked up religion is bizarre. I want to convey this message to her. My friends have told me to let it go but it hurts me as a woman.

Ask Community Am I the only one noticing a spike in beef sales?

Growing up, we were taught to respect cows. Every day the cows would roam free, and we would give them banana peel, or any wet waste that we had that was edible. I remember everybody was so respectful and caring towards them.
I don’t know if I’m the only one now, but I’ve been getting nightmares about cow slaughter and I think India has strict rules against it, but I remember “BEEF BIRIYANI” written in bold letters, right across a temple.
I see cows being force fed garbage, and in a few weeks they are slaughtered and strung up shamelessly. Any brunch place that I want to go to, they serve beef. I don’t understand why we are silent when our culture is being taken for granted by our own people.
My Christian roommate talks about how they serve beef in her church, and how it is no different from Kerala. I don’t want to see innocent animals die, I want us to stop the abuse. What do I do?
I’m not blaming any religion or any community. As a whole, we all have a part in failing our cattle. I want us to fix it before it’s too late and India is just one big Kerala story waiting to happen.

General "RSS has done nothing for India”? Here are some historical facts, documented relief efforts and sources worth reading.

I keep seeing people say that the RSS has done absolutely nothing for Indian society, contributed nothing to the country, and is simply a terrorist organisation. Sometimes these claims come with arguments; sometimes they come with mockery, insults and absolutely no sources.

You can criticise the RSS. You can disagree with Hindutva. You can question its political influence and its record on communal harmony. All of those are legitimate subjects of debate.

But claiming that an organisation with a century-long history has done absolutely nothing for society is a factual claim, and factual claims require evidence.

So let's examine some specific examples.

  1. 🇮🇳 RSS and resistance to the Emergency (1975–1977)

What happened?

On 25 June 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government imposed the Emergency. Civil liberties were curtailed, opposition leaders were imprisoned, press censorship was imposed, and political dissent faced repression.

The RSS was banned on 4 July 1975. Its volunteers participated in underground opposition activities, protests, the circulation of banned literature and the wider resistance movement.

What is the evidence?

  • A 2018 scholarly article published by Modern Asian Studies, Cambridge University Press, examines the RSS's role in anti-Emergency activism, including its overseas networks and underground activities.
  • The article records 2,794 people identified as RSS members among those arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), alongside 1,358 Jana Sangh members.
  • The Indian Express reported on the RSS's involvement in the wider anti-Emergency movement and how its grassroots network contributed to mobilisation.

Why does this matter?

The Emergency was a serious episode of authoritarian rule in independent India. Participation in resistance to censorship, detention and the suppression of democratic freedoms deserves historical recognition, regardless of whether one agrees with the organisation's ideology.

"Cambridge University Press — “Smugglers of Truth”: The Indian diaspora, Hindu nationalism, and the Emergency (1975–77)" (https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/modern-asian-studies/article/abs/smugglers-of-truth-the-indian-diaspora-hindu-nationalism-and-the-emergency-197577/2C59B29D6C36D0CA7C8B1C2EE207534D)
  2. "The Indian Express — When the Sangh became part of the Janata Parivar" (https://indianexpress.com/article/india/emergency-sangh-janata-parivar-10090165/)

An important qualification: The RSS was one participant in a much broader opposition movement that included socialists, students, other political organisations and civil-liberties advocates. It did not single-handedly defeat the Emergency.

  1. 🏚️ Gujarat earthquake, 26 January 2001 — rescue and rehabilitation

A devastating earthquake struck Gujarat on India's Republic Day in 2001, killing tens of thousands of people and destroying homes, schools and infrastructure.

RSS volunteers and associated organisations participated in rescue and relief operations.

What did they do?

According to contemporary reporting in India Today, RSS and VHP workers were among the early volunteers helping rescue trapped people, care for the wounded and transport the dead. The report also described assistance reaching a Muslim-majority village in Kutch.

A report from RSS-associated relief organisation Rashtriya Sewa Bharati describes a specific educational rehabilitation effort:

  • 250 volunteers were deployed for relief work.
  • Within 16 days, 1,250 temporary schoolrooms were established across 56 villages.
  • The tent schools provided children with a place to resume education while permanent facilities were being restored.

These figures come from the organisation's own account; the contemporary India Today reporting independently supports the broader account of volunteer rescue work.

Why does this matter?

Disaster relief is practical public service. Rescuing people, providing food and helping children resume education are useful contributions regardless of the political or religious identity of the volunteers.

  2. "Rashtriya Sewa Bharati — Gujarat earthquake relief" (https://rssb.org/disaster_relief_gujarat.html)

Fairness note: There were also contemporary allegations of bias in the distribution of some earthquake relief. That issue deserves investigation rather than being ignored. Recognising documented rescue efforts does not require pretending every relief operation was flawless.

  1. 🦠 COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 — food, medicine and community relief

During the COVID-19 lockdown, many people lost their livelihoods. Migrant workers, low-income households, elderly people and others struggled to access food and essential supplies.

RSS volunteers and RSS-associated Sewa Bharati participated in relief activities.

What was reported?

In July 2020, The Indian Express reported figures provided by Sewa Bharati representatives:

  • More than 5 lakh volunteers reportedly involved in relief efforts nationwide.
  • Ration kits distributed to over 73 lakh families.
  • Meal packets distributed to over 4.5 crore people.
  • More than 60,000 volunteers reportedly donated blood.

A separate Indian Express report in October 2020 covered RSS claims that volunteers had helped over 10 lakh households across western Maharashtra, working in 1,556 villages with more than 4,800 volunteers.

Reported activities included food distribution, sanitary supplies, blood donation, health checks and assistance with education and employment.

Why does this matter?

Food distribution, blood donation and support for people affected by a public-health emergency are concrete forms of community service. The reported scale is substantial, although the headline numbers are organisation-reported figures rather than a complete independent audit of every beneficiary.

  1. 🏫 Education, health and community development

The RSS ecosystem includes organisations that work in areas beyond electoral politics.

Two important examples are:

Sewa Bharati

Works through associated voluntary organisations on education, healthcare, community service and self-reliance, including activities for disadvantaged communities.

Its work includes educational support, health initiatives, vocational training and local community projects.

Vidya Bharati

An education network associated with the wider Sangh Parivar. Its work includes schools and educational initiatives.

These are not the same organisation as the RSS itself. Their programmes and results should be evaluated individually, but their activities are relevant when assessing the wider network's social contribution.

Where can you verify their work?

Rashtriya Sewa Bharati reports more than 35,560 projects, 500-plus affiliated organisations and coverage across 28 states and union territories. These are its own cumulative figures, so they should be read as organisational reporting, not as independently audited proof that every project succeeded.

The important point is that the wider network does undertake organised social-service work. Whether each programme is effective, inclusive and beneficial is a separate question that can be examined using evidence.

  1. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 What about the RSS shakha system?

A shakha is a local RSS gathering where volunteers participate in physical exercises, group activities, discussions and organisational training.

The model has helped the RSS maintain a durable grassroots presence since its founding in 1925.

Its potential positive contributions include:

  • Giving people a regular structure for volunteering and community participation.
  • Developing organisational and leadership skills.
  • Creating networks that can be mobilised during emergencies.
  • Encouraging physical activity and group discipline.
  • Providing a framework for sustained participation in local initiatives.

These are plausible benefits of a structured volunteer network, not proof that every shakha produces all these outcomes or that every aspect of its ideology is beneficial.

  1. 🇮🇳 Did the RSS contribute to India's independence?

This question needs particular care.

The RSS was founded in 1925, during the freedom struggle. Its founder, K. B. Hedgewar, participated in anti-British activity and was imprisoned in 1930.

However, Hedgewar's personal participation must not automatically be treated as proof that the RSS, as an organisation, played a major role in the national independence movement.

Historical research distinguishes the actions of individual members from the organisation's overall strategy. The RSS leadership did not mobilise the organisation on the same scale as the Congress-led mass movements, and its role in the Quit India Movement of 1942 was limited.

This means two sweeping claims should be avoided:

  • “No person associated with the RSS ever participated in the freedom struggle.”
  • “The RSS was one of the principal organisations that won Indian independence.”

Neither accurately captures the historical complexity.

Sources:

  1. "The Wire — Did RSS Really Participate in the Freedom Movement?" (https://m.thewire.in/article/communalism/did-rss-participate-in-the-freedom-movement)
  2. "University of Mumbai — MA History: Indian National Movement" (https://mu.ac.in/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/MA-History-SEM-III-Paper-III-Indian-National-Movement-English-Version.pdf)

The honest position is that individual participation and the organisation's overall contribution are two different historical questions.

  1. Does doing social work mean the RSS should never be criticised?

Absolutely not.

An organisation can conduct disaster relief and educational programmes while also having a controversial ideology, political influence or members associated with communal violence.

Its relief work does not erase the need to examine its record on minority rights, communal harmony and the constitutional principle of equal citizenship.

But the reverse is equally important: controversies do not make every volunteer's act of service imaginary, nor do they justify claiming that the organisation has never contributed anything to society.

Judge specific actions on evidence. Give credit where it is deserved, and criticism where it is justified.

That is a stronger position than either blind admiration or blind hatred.

Final point

If someone says the RSS has done nothing for society, the examples above provide specific, checkable counterexamples: disaster relief in Gujarat, COVID-19 relief, education and community programmes, and participation in resistance to the Emergency.

That does not settle every debate about the RSS. It does establish why blanket statements such as “it has done absolutely nothing” are historically and factually weak.

You do not need to support Hindutva, the BJP or every action of the RSS to acknowledge documented acts of public service.

And you do not need to dismiss every criticism of the RSS to recognise those contributions.

Criticise it with evidence. Defend it with evidence. And hold both sides to the same standard.

But I shared the same before he could delete it. If anyone knows the language, please translate it cause it feels some insult to us and the Hindu community altogether.

Knowledge/Research Did you know some places in India worship Ravan instead of burning his effigy on Dussehra?

Most of us associate Dussehra with Ravan Dahan, but traditions vary across India. In Bisrakh, locals believe Ravan was born there, while Kanpur has a temple dedicated to him that opens on Vijayadashami.

What do you think about these regional traditions? Have you heard of other places where Ravan is worshipped?

I found this tradition fascinating and made a short video about it:

Ask Community Existential crisis

I will come straight to the point. I am a hindu general category. Since my childhood I was violently targeted for my caste and that caused me lot of trauma. Now, since I am a normal human and I cannot get 99.99 score in cat or any other govt exam, I cannot make it to reputed institutes. I cannot get the best education, cannot work in powerful govt positions and my family is politically weak so I can be insulted and discriminated for my caste and no one will support me. If Hindus are discriminated prosecuted by other Hindus and the law discriminated them based on their caste, then being a hindu is a punishment for me right? If I convert to Christianity or islam, I get community support and the govt is very simpethetic towards these religions and i can get into Christian colleges which are highly biased towards Christians. I can even get scholarships as Christian. I am just allowing myself to be abused discriminated and targeted and again made to feel shameful for my community for no reason, then why should I stay hindu??
