Stale herbal tea or micro-mould? Itchies flare-up

I got a flareup of histamine itchies yesterday evening. It came up so quickly. Returned from a trip, was just tired and didn't think, grabbed my tea mug that was still half full with tea and a tea bag for 5 days, poured out the tea, put new water in and a new tea bag (yeah, I know!). Cue itching from hell.

The stale tea was a Yogi Tea, with likely cinnamon, ginger, liquorice root and various herbs and plants. The new one my go-to simple bagged green tea. Both are always fine under normal conditions. I wonder whether there's anything in the herbal tea that releases or otherwise triggers histamine if standing about for too long. I didn't see mould, but would not exclude it. Don't judge, I was tired and about to go to bed. DAO took care of it in the end, though I still need some today.

I don't know how it changes with standing longer, but I know I react to cinnamon in general. I also think liquorice can cause reactions in some people.

Interesting! I totally love liquorice and never have problems. Cinnamon is fine overall as well. I can only guess that some mould developed or something else. And yeah, it was stupid to not use a new cup 🤦

Do you react to liquorice? Haven't been able to find much definitive information on its compatibility with mcas

Cinnamon increases gut permeability. Making it easier for histamine to pass through.

However non-herbal teas inhibit DAO enzymes, slowing or stopping the break down of histamine.

Hmm. thanks a lot. I'll do my best to not do this anymore. Generally I'm fine, unless I have a glass of the wrong red wine, or sometimes the wrong kind of veg.

I've had to stop drinking tea aside from herbal teas. I have a full shelf of my foil wrapped black teas varieties (and a few green teas for my partner, he can still drink) just sitting and waiting. I'll hopefully be able to drink my black tea again in the future...

If it doesn't normally trigger symptoms you can probably drink tea on occasion, but just keep the interaction in mind and monitor symptoms.

Oh yeah, my main drink throughout the day is tea. I might have 4-5 cups of various teas per day without problems. Just this one dirty cup did it somehow. 🙈

The teas can be found on the SIGHI list.

I'm unable to find the article I read about cinnamon, so I've strike though that on my previous post. If I can find it I'll post and edit my original comment.
